I'll Be Home for Christmas (1998) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

You're probably wondering: where on earth did I find this movie? And I understand your reaction, since it seems that the whole world decided to forget about this Christmas film made by none other than Disney because it was a complete flop at the time. Even so, it seems that this was no impediment for a national channel in my country to broadcast it almost daily during the Christmas season, every year, so that a younger and more naive me could watch it without any remorse. That's how I got to know this movie, and that's how I bring it to you today during this season. I warn you in advance, don't expect a recommendation from me or anything like that, because I know better than anyone how terrible it is in many ways.

Even so, here I am to talk to you about this Christmas movie, which has a somewhat unusual plot for a Disney film, to be honest. Although, of course, considering the date it was released, it's understandable that this giant franchise decided to release a movie like this. Let's remember that in the late 90s and early 2000s, Disney went through a kind of transition or something similar. That's how the famous mouse's production company brought us one of its best eras with releases and stories that have become cult classics to this day. However, I wish I could say the same about this movie, but unfortunately, that's not the case.

De seguro se preguntarán: ¿de dónde rayos saqué esta película? Y entiendo su reacción ya que, al parecer, el mundo entero decidió olvidarse de esta cinta navideña hecha por nada menos que Disney debido a que fue un completo fracaso en su época. Aún así, parece que esto no fue ningún impedimento para que un canal nacional de mi país lo llegara a transmitir casi diariamente en fechas decembrinas, cada año para que un yo más pequeño e ingenuo lo viera sin ningún remordimiento. Así fue como conocí esta película y así es como se las traigo a ustedes hoy en estas fechas. Desde ya les advierto, no esperen una recomendación de mi parte ni nada por el estilo ya que sé más que nadie lo pésima que es en varios sentidos.

Aún así, aquí estoy para hablarles de esta película navideña, la cual posee una trama un tanto inusual para ser de Disney, la verdad. Aunque, claro, teniendo en cuenta la fecha en la que fue estrenada es comprensible que esta gigantesca franquicia haya decidido sacar una película como esta. Recordemos que para finales de los 90 e inicios de los 2000, Disney pasó por una especie de transición o algo parecido. Es así como la casa productora del famoso ratón nos trajo una de sus mejores épocas con estrenos e historias que se han vuelto obras de culto hasta la fecha de hoy. Sin embargo, quisiera poder decir lo mismo con esta película, pero lamentablemente no es el caso.

I'll Be Home for Christmas tells the story of Jake Wilkinson, a college teenager who wants to get home to his parents with his girlfriend before Christmas Eve in order to win the Porsche 356 his father promised him in a bet. However, due to a problem he had with some high school bullies, they take revenge on Jake by forcing him to dress up as Santa Claus and then abandoning him in the middle of the California desert. It is here that we see our young Jake dressed in red and penniless, trying to get home by various means while facing problems and challenges throughout this arduous journey.

If the premise caught your attention, then I must tell you that yes, it is one of those Disney movies where we see our protagonist go through a lot of unusual things as he tries to get home. You may be familiar with this type of story from other family comedy movies or teen movies where teenagers get into trouble and things like that. It's no surprise that in the late 90s, Disney, like many other major franchises, tried its hand at this type of comedy film. Unfortunately, due to its failure, it was forgotten over time, as it seems that no one liked the premise, the characters, or the style of humor in this film.

I'll Be Home for Christmas nos cuenta la historia de Jake Wilkinson, un adolescente universitario que busca llegar a casa de sus padres justo con su novia antes de Nochebuena para así ganarse el Porsche 356 que su padre le prometió en una apuesta. Sin embargo, debido a un problema que tuvo con unos bravucones del instituto, estos se desquitan con Jake obligándolo a disfrazarse de Santa Claus para luego dejarlo tirado en medio del desierto de California. Es aquí donde veremos a nuestro joven Jake vestido de rojo y sin dinero intentando llegar a casa por medio de diferentes formas mientras afronta problemas y retos a lo largo de este engorroso viaje.

Si la premisa te llamó la atención entonces debo decirte que si, es una de esas películas de Disney donde vemos a nuestro protagonista pasar por un montón de cosas bastante inusuales mientras intenta llegar a casa. Seguramente puede que te suene este tipo de historias de otras películas de comedia familiares o de adolescentes que se meten en problemas y cosas por el estilo. No es una novedad que para finales de los 90 Disney llegase a probar -al igual que muchas otras grandes franquicias- este tipo de películas humorísticas. Lamentablemente, por el fracaso que tuvo fue olvidado con el tiempo ya que parece que a nadie le gustó dicha premisa, así como sus personajes y el estilo de humor que tiene esta cinta.

I honestly don't think it's a bad movie, or at least not entirely. While it has a style of humor that doesn't quite match my current tastes, it's not like it leaves me completely indifferent throughout the entire film. It has its funny moments, yes, but it also has many details that are difficult to ignore, to be honest. If you ask me what the hell I saw in this movie when I was a kid who watched it over and over again, I wouldn't really know how to answer you. I'll just say that both the story and a few details, such as the soundtrack, are what ended up catching my attention, and even now it gives me that feeling of nostalgia that I can't help but feel, no matter how much I hate this movie.

Today, I can even understand certain things that this movie tells us that I didn't understand at all when I was a kid. Starting with our protagonist and the difficult situation he has to go through to get home with no money in his pocket in his red Santa suit. Although at first glance many of the things our young Jake comes up with to always get his way are practically absurd and unrealistic, that doesn't detract from how entertaining this movie is. Obviously, the main point of this story is the nonsense that our protagonist experiences throughout his journey from California to New York.

Sinceramente no pienso que sea una mala película, o al menos no del todo. Si bien tiene un estilo de humor que no termina de pegar con mis actuales gustos, tampoco es que me deje completamente indiferente a lo largo de toda la cinta. Tiene sus momentos divertidos, si, pero también tiene muchos detalles difíciles de ignorar, la verdad. Si me preguntan qué rayos fue lo que le ví a esta película cuando era un niño que la repetía a cada rato no sabría muy bien qué responderles. Solo diré que tanto la historia como uno que otro detalle como su banda sonora son lo que terminaron de llamar mi atención y aún ahora me genera esa sensación de nostalgia que no puedo evitar sentir por más que odie esta película.

Al día de hoy puedo llegar incluso a entender ciertas cosas que nos cuenta esta película que no entendía para nada cuando era un niño. Empezando por nuestro protagonista y la difícil situación en la que este tiene que pasar para llegar a casa sin ningún medio en su bolsillo de su traje rojo de Santa. Si bien a simple vista muchas de las cosas que se ingenia nuestro joven Jake para salirse siempre con la suya es algo prácticamente absurdo e irreal, eso no le resta valor a lo entretenida que es esta película. Obviamente, el punto principal de esta historia es el sinsentido que tiene todo lo que vive nuestro protagonista a lo largo de su viaje desde California a Nueva York.

The truth is, I don't understand what people saw as wrong with this movie at the time. For a Christmas movie, it's quite entertaining, and I say that as someone who doesn't like watching Christmas movies these days. Nowadays, you see all the Christmas comedy movies that are out there, and I doubt there's any that are as entertaining as this one. Of course, I'm speaking from complete ignorance here, but the truth is that I highly doubt that the humor that exists today, which is full of bad jokes and double entendres with absurd, computer-generated scenes, is the best. Mind you, this is just my opinion based on what I like.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned for preferring the past to the present, yes. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little with the latter and there are many interesting Christmas movies out there to watch, yes. But even so, I'm not going to search through the pile of movies out there now to confirm if one is better than another, since in the end it all comes down to a simple subjective opinion. I respect everyone's tastes, so I'm not going to criticize senselessly just for the sake of it. What I'm getting at with all this is that the movie we're here to discuss today may not have the best jokes or the best plot or script in the world. But at least it has everything it needs to be an entertaining film and not go completely unnoticed.

La verdad es que no entiendo qué fue lo malo que le vieron a esta película en su momento. Para ser navideña es bastante entretenida y eso que lo digo yo, alguien que no le gusta ver películas navideñas al día de hoy. Actualmente uno llega a ver las películas navideñas de comedia que existen y dudo mucho que haya alguna que sea tan entretenida como lo es esta película. Claro, aquí estoy hablando desde la completa ignorancia, pero la verdad es que dudo mucho que el humor que existe ahora, la cual está repleto de chistes malos y mensajes de doble sentido con escenas absurdas y hechas por computadora sean lo mejor. Ojo, es solo mi opinión basado en lo que me gusta a mí nomás.

Tal vez sea un viejo al preferir lo antaño que lo moderno, si. Tal vez exagere un poco con esto último y haya por ahí muchas películas navideñas interesantes para ver, sí. Pero igualmente no voy a buscar entre el montón de películas que hay ahora para confirmar si alguna es mejor que otra ya que al final todo termina siendo una simple opinión subjetiva. Respeto los gustos de cada quien, así que no voy a andar criticando sin sentido nomás porque sí y ya. Lo que quiero llegar con todo esto es que la película de la cual estamos aquí hoy puede que no tenga los mejores chistes o la mejor trama o guión del mundo. Pero al menos tiene todo lo necesario para ser una cinta entretenida y así no pasar desapercibido por completo.

I repeat, I am not recommending watching this movie, as I admit that there are many other better options to watch at this time of year. If there is one thing that both the director and the creators of this film did well, it was to give us an interesting story with a clear message. When talking about Christmas, many people talk about parties, gifts, food, and many other material things. Driven by these things, people decide to do "good deeds" just to receive a reward in return at the end of the day. This is normal, as human beings always tend to seek their own benefit first and foremost. But the message this film gives us tells us something else.

"Doing good for others is better than seeking to do good for your own benefit", is what this Christmas story tries to tell us. It is not always necessary to expect a reward or benefit at the end in order to do something good for others, especially if they are your family or loved ones. Yes, I know this all sounds very cliché, especially in a Christmas movie. It's like the typical message that if you do good, good things will happen to you. But the way this movie shows it to us isn't so bad. Both Jake's personality and the things he does throughout his journey show us in an exemplary way how acting for your own benefit doesn't always end well.

Repito, con esto no estoy recomendando ver esta película ya que admito que hay muchas otras opciones mejores para ver en estas fechas. Si algo hizo bien tanto el director como los creadores de esta cinta es darnos una historia interesante con un claro mensaje. Cuando se habla de la navidad muchos hablan de las fiestas, los regalos, la comida y muchas otras cosas materiales. Impulsados por estas cosas la gente decide hacer “buenas obras” solo para recibir un premio a cambio al final del día. Esto es normal ya que el ser humano siempre acostumbra a buscar su propio beneficio antes que nada. Pero el mensaje que nos da esta película nos dice otra cosa.

“Hacer el bien para los demás es mejor que buscar hacer el bien por tu propio beneficio nomás”, es lo que nos intenta decir con esta historia navideña. No siempre es necesario esperar algún premio o beneficio al final para así poder hacer algo bien por los demás, sobre todo si son tu familia o tus seres queridos. Si, sé que todo esto suena muy cliché y más al ser una película navideña. Es como el típico mensaje final de que si haces el bien te irá bien. Pero la forma en la que nos lo muestra esta película no está tan mal. Tanto la forma de ser de Jake como las cosas que hace a lo largo de su viaje nos demuestra de manera ejemplar cómo el obrar por beneficio propio no siempre termina bien.

On the other hand, I don't have much else to say about the rest of the characters we see in this movie, simply because I don't want to. Most of the secondary characters are only there to embarrass themselves or cause laughter, depending on how you look at it. I don't really like the humor between Jake and the others, but I don't expect much from a cast of teenagers imitating college students from that era. Since it's Disney, it's obvious that it doesn't have heavy humor or anything like that; its jokes and pranks are very childish. I have nothing against the cast either; every actor does a good job, especially Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of I'll Be Home for Christmas. Disney spared no expense in making a practical but entertaining film. With almost no computer-generated effects, most of the resources used are practical effects, makeup, and Christmas clothes or costumes, of course. The cinematography isn't bad for the time, although it doesn't stand out as much as any other comedy film. The sound effects are also good, but what really stands out above all else is the soundtrack. With tracks from songs of the era, many scenes in this film are unforgettable, personally. Anyway, here's another Christmas movie for the list.

Personally, I give it a 7/10 rating in terms of the comedy genre.

Por otro lado, no tengo mucho más de qué hablar del resto de los personajes que vemos en esta película por el simple hecho de no querer hacerlo. La mayoría de los personajes secundarios solo están para pasar vergüenza o causar risa, dependiendo de cómo lo veas. El humor que se maneja entre Jake y los demás no termina de agradarme del todo, pero tampoco espero mucho de un elenco de adolescentes imitando ser universitarios de aquella época. Como es de Disney es evidente que no tiene un humor pesado ni nada por el estilo, sus chistes y bromas son de lo más infantiles. Tampoco tengo nada en contra del elenco, cada actor hace un buen trabajo, sobre todo Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablamos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene I'll Be Home for Christmas. Disney no escatimó en gastos al hacer una película práctica pero entretenida. Sin casi nada de efectos hechos por computadora, la mayoría de recursos que se utilizan son efectos prácticos, maquillaje y ropa o trajes navideños, por supuesto. La fotografía no está mal para la época, aunque no llama tanto la atención como cualquier otra película de comedia. Los efectos de sonido también están bien, pero en lo que sí llega a destacarse por sobre todo es en la banda sonora. Con pistas de canciones de la época, muchas escenas de esta película son inolvidables, en lo personal. En fin, aquí está otra película navideña más para la lista.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia.
