I don't want to go into detail about why this is, so I'll just focus on what's related to the world of cinema and entertainment. When I was a child, this wasn't the case, as I did take part in all the traditions associated with this type of celebration at home. One of those traditions was watching Christmas movies on cable television. You can imagine which movie, among the many Christmas movies available, was repeated over and over again. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of those Christmas classics that I considered one of my favorites.

I still feel the same way today, even though my opinion of the world of cinema and adaptations has changed quite a bit since then. To begin with, I would like to mention the enormous ingenuity of the creator of this and many other stories that are well known in the world of literature and cinema thanks to their uniqueness. That's right, I'm talking about Dr. Seuss, a genius of the last century who inspired many children of his time, as well as touching the hearts of those of us in the next generation. Adaptations such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas have caught the public's attention and, depending on the version, this can be both children and adults alike.

De pequeño no era el caso, ya que sí participaba en todas las tradiciones que se hacían sobre este tipo de celebraciones en casa. Una de esas era ver películas navideñas en canales de televisión por cable. Ya se imaginarán -de entre tantas películas navideñas que hay- cuál era la que más se repetía una y otra vez. How the Grinch Stole Christmas es para mí uno de esos clásicos navideños que los consideraba uno de mis favoritos.

Aún en la actualidad sigo pensando igual a pesar de que mi opinión sobre el mundo del cine y las adaptaciones han cambiado bastante desde entonces. Para empezar, me gustaría mencionar el enorme ingenio que poseía el creador de esta y de muchas otras historias conocidas en el mundo de la literatura y el cine gracias a lo únicas que son. Así es, estoy hablando del Dr. Seuss, un genio del siglo pasado que inspiró a muchos niños de su época, además de hacernos llegar al corazón a los que somos de la siguiente generación. The big universe that Dr. Seuss created through his children's books is wonderful, and I'm only speaking based on the little I know from the adaptations that have been made for film and television. But that's a topic for another time, possibly a special dedicated to this great phenomenon. For now, I want to focus solely on the film we are here to discuss today, which many of you reading this will surely be familiar with thanks to Jim Carrey's excellent acting and performance as the Grinch. And that's normal, because it's so funny and entertaining that it serves as a classic comedy film, regardless of whether it's Christmas-themed or not.

One interesting thing about this adaptation is that it is a "Live Action" version of the animated adaptation of the same name that was made of the children's play broadcast on television in 1966. These two adaptations have been compared ever since due to their great similarity. What strikes me as strange about this is that, at the time, this film from the 2000s was criticized for its script and story. Obviously, most of the praise went to Jim Carrey, who many believe carried the entire film from start to finish. Personally, I'm not a big fan of live-action films; I usually prefer the original versions of each work. However, there are some exceptions.

El enorme universo que creó el Dr. Seuss a base de sus libros infantiles es maravilloso y eso que solo hablo basándome únicamente en lo poco que conozco gracias a las adaptaciones que se han hecho para el cine y la televisión. Pero ya esto es tema para otro momento, posiblemente un especial dedicado a este gran fenómeno. Por el momento quiero centrarme únicamente en la película de la cual venimos a hablarles hoy, la cual seguramente muchos de los que me leen la conocen gracias al excelente trabajo actoral e interpretativo que realizó Jim Carrey como el Grinch en este caso. Y es normal, ya que es tan divertida y entretenida que sirve como una película clásica de comedia, indiferentemente de si es navideña o no.

Una cosa interesante de esta adaptación es que es una versión “Live Action” de la homónima adaptación animada que le hicieron a la obra infantil emitida en la televisión en 1966. Estas dos adaptaciones han sido comparadas desde entonces debido al gran parecido que ambas poseen. Lo que me hace extraño de esto es que, en aquel entonces, esta película de los años 2000 fue criticada debido a su guión e historia. Obviamente, la mayoría de elogios se las llevó Jim Carrey, quienes creen que fue el que acarreó toda la película de inicio a fin. En lo personal no soy muy fan de los Live Actions, normalmente prefiero las versiones originales de cada obra. Sin embargo, existen algunas excepciones.

For example, in the case of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, I prefer the 2000 version solely because of Jim Carrey. Some may say that this is a very absurd reason, but those who are familiar with this great actor's enormous talent when it comes to playing a role will recognize that it is difficult not to prefer watching one of his films over any other. But in this case, I wouldn't say it's just because of Jim, to be honest. Apart from having a huge impact on my childhood, this film defined everything I love about the world of cinema and comedy in general. And that's normal after losing count of the number of times I've seen it since I was a kid.

Speaking of the humor and the type of comedy in this film, which, I remind you again, is an adaptation of a children's book, it's more double entendres or acid humor leaning toward being for adults than anything else. Mind you, I'm not saying that all the humor in this film is that strong; it mostly depends on Jim Carrey's interpretation and performance. His body language, jokes, reactions, and exaggerated expressions are the center of entertainment in this film. But there's no denying that there are certain moments where we see some references and hidden jokes that... well, I don't consider them very suitable for children.

Por ejemplo, en el caso de How the Grinch Stole Christmas prefiero esta versión del 2000 únicamente por Jim Carrey. Algunos ya me dirán que es una razón muy absurda para esto, pero los que conocen el enorme talento que tiene este grandioso actor al momento de interpretar un papel reconocerá que es difícil no preferir ver una de sus películas antes que cualquier otra. Pero en este caso no solo diría que es únicamente por Jim, la verdad. Aparte de impactar en gran parte de mi infancia, esta película definió todo lo que me gusta del mundo del cine y la comedia en general. Y es normal esto luego de perder la cuenta de las veces que la vi desde que era pequeño.

Hablando del humor y el tipo de comedia que maneja esta película, la cual les recuerdo de nuevo que es una adaptación de un libro para niños, es más de doble sentido o humor ácido tirando a ser para adultos que cualquier otra cosa. Ojo, no digo que todo el humor que se maneja en esta cinta sea así de fuerte, mayormente depende mucho de la interpretación y actuación de Jim Carrey. Su lenguaje corporal, chistes, reacciones y expresiones exageradas son el centro del entretenimiento de esta película. Pero no hay que negar que se pueden notar ciertos momentos donde vemos algunas referencias y chistes ocultos que… bueno, no los considero muy aptos para los niños.

But anyway, as I said before, these were the kinds of movies I watched when I was little, and this same type of film with very sharp humor was what I grew up watching throughout my childhood and pre-teen years. Now that I'm older, almost thirty years old, watching this film again, I clearly notice these hidden messages with double meanings between humorous scenes with laughter and funny jokes. Also, another thing worth mentioning is that the cast doesn't really help much in offering us a considerable repertoire of good performances, to be honest. Among the most notable are little Cindy, her father Lou, the mayor of Whoville, and Martha May.

Of all of them, I think the only one who stands out is little Cindy, and that's because she plays her role well. The rest don't stand out at all, beyond just making fools of themselves. Especially the mayor and Martha May, who, well, those who have seen and remember the movie know how she behaves all the time. Definitely, with a cast like this, it's normal that someone like Jim Carrey playing a role like the Grinch would stand out so much in this movie. But beyond playing his role well and entertaining us with a memorable performance, I liked this version of the Grinch more than any other that has existed in the world of cinema.

Pero bueno, como dije antes, este era el tipo de películas que veía cuando era pequeño y este mismo tipo de películas con humor muy ácido fue lo que acostumbré a ver a lo largo de mi infancia y preadolescencia. Ya después de grande y con casi tres décadas de edad es que, viendo una vez más esta cinta, noto claramente dichos mensajes ocultos con doble sentido entre escenas humorísticas con risas y bromas graciosas. También, otra cosa que hay que mencionar es que el elenco tampoco ayuda mucho a ofrecernos un repertorio considerable de buenas interpretaciones, para ser honestos. Entre los más notables está la pequeña Cindy, su padre Lou, el alcalde de Whoville y Martha May.

De entre todos creo que la única que se salva es la pequeña Cindy y es porque mantiene bien su respectivo papel. El resto no destaca en lo absoluto, más allá de solo hacer el ridículo. Sobre todo el alcalde y la Martha May que, bueno, ya saben cómo se comporta todo el tiempo los que vieron y recuerdan la película. Definitivamente, con un elenco así es normal que alguien como Jim Carrey haciendo tal papel como lo es el Grinch haya destacado tanto en esta película. Pero más allá de hacer bien su papel y entretenernos con una interpretación memorable, esta versión del Grinch me gustó más que las demás que han existido en el mundo del cine.

We see what he was like as a child and learn the reason for his intense hatred of Christmas and the inhabitants of Whoville. I honestly believe that, although it is not one of the most memorable character developments out there, we can certainly learn some interesting lessons from his life. Because yes, despite being a Christmas story where we only see the same lesson about what Christmas supposedly means at the end, and I'm not interested in that at all, we can still learn valuable lessons that we can apply to our daily lives.

For example, we have the case of excess, consumerism, and the constant competition that exists in the town of Whoville to see who buys the best gifts, whose house is the most decorated, who is the best dressed, or who prepares the best feast for the holiday. This huge and overwhelming spectacle that we see at the beginning of the film, with people running around buying, decorating, and preparing everything as if their lives depended on it, is something that really catches our attention. But they don't do it for a good reason, or at least not entirely. There are always feelings such as envy, pride, or obsession behind these customs.

La razón de esto es simple y es que en esta película se puede ver un origen y desarrollo que me gustaron bastante del personaje. Vemos cómo era de pequeño y conocemos la razón de su gran odio por la navidad y por los habitantes de Whoville. Sinceramente considero que, si bien no es de los desarrollos de personajes más memorables que hay, sí es cierto que podemos sacar una que otra lección interesante de su vida. Porque sí, a pesar de ser una historia navideña donde solamente veremos al final la misma lección de lo que supuestamente significa la navidad y todo es que no me interesa en lo absoluto, podemos extraer lecciones valiosas que podemos aplicar en nuestra vida diaria inclusive.

Por ejemplo, tenemos el caso de los excesos, el consumismo y la constante competencia que existe en esta ciudad de Whoville por ver quiénes compran los mejores regalos, qué casa es la que está más adornada o quién es el que está mejor vestido o prepara el mejor banquete para la fecha. Todo este enorme y apabullante espectáculo que vemos al principio de la película con gente corriendo de aquí para allá comprando, decorando y preparándolo todo como si sus vidas dependieran de ello es algo que llama mucho la atención. Pero no lo hacen por un buen motivo, o al menos no del todo. Siempre hay sentimientos como la envidia, el orgullo o la obsesión entre éstas costumbres.

While it's true that I didn't like the ending of this movie at all, and that it's one of those twists or happy endings so typical of any Christmas movie, I won't deny that we can take something good from it.

This may be that, beyond appearances, what matters most is what we have or feel deep in our hearts. Those hidden actions or motives behind everything we do are what define us, not what we wear or buy or use. On the other hand, with the Grinch, we can learn something interesting about being different. As someone who, since childhood, has felt that I am not like most people of my generation, I feel somewhat familiar with everything the Grinch experiences and feels. And while all this sounds very contrived, the truth is that right now I feel just like he did at the beginning, locked away in a cave far from everything I completely dislike.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this film. Something that not many people have mentioned and that I would like to highlight about this film is how well it has aged audiovisually, to be honest. The visual effects in the film are very well done for a film that is more than twenty years old. More than anything, I'm referring to the CGI, as both the practical effects and the makeup stand out very well. Although it has a somewhat dark tone for a Christmas movie, the colors and lighting are very well done. The sound effects are also very well done, but what stands out the most is definitely the soundtrack. In short, this is a movie I recommend watching during this time of year.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9/10 in terms of the comedy and fantasy genre.

Hay personajes en esta película que personifican bien estos sentimientos, como por ejemplo lo es el caso del alcalde quien vemos que es alguien narcisista y orgulloso ya sea por su posición como por su estatus social. Así mismo podemos conocer gente en la vida real que se deja llevar por las cosas físicas como una casa bien decorada, gente con lujosos autos o vestimenta costosa. Esta gente que vive del consumismo siempre termina vacíos por dentro cuando todo llega a su fin de la noche a la mañana. Si bien es cierto que el final que vemos en esta película no me gustó en lo absoluto y que es de esos giros o finales felices tan típicos de cualquier película navideña; no voy a negar que podemos sacar algo bueno de esto.

Esto puede ser que, más allá de las apariencias, lo que más debe de valer es lo que tenemos o sentimos en el fondo de nuestro corazón. Esas acciones o motivos ocultos que tenemos detrás de cada cosa que hacemos es lo que nos define, no lo que vestimos o compramos o usamos. Por otro lado, con el caso del Grinch podemos aprender algo interesante sobre ser diferente. Como alguien que desde pequeño he sentido que no soy igual a la mayoría de gente de mi generación, me siento en parte familiarizado por todo lo que vive y siente el Grinch. Y si bien suena muy reinventado todo esto, la verdad es que ahora mismo me siento igual que él al principio, encerrado en una cueva lejos de todo lo que me desagrada por completo.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Algo que no mucha gente ha mencionado y que quisiera destacar de esta película es lo bien que ha envejecido a nivel audiovisual, la verdad. Los efectos visuales que tiene la película están muy bien hechos para ser una película de hace más de veinte años. Más que nada, me refiero al CGI que a los demás ya que tanto en efectos prácticos como también en maquillajes logra destacarse muy bien. Si bien tiene un tono un tanto oscuro para ser navideño, los colores y las luces se mantienen muy bien. Los efectos de sonido también están muy bien hechos, pero lo que más se destaca de esto es la banda sonora definitivamente. En fin, esta es una película que recomiendo ver para estas fechas.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia y la fantasía.
