From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated! | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Hello, anime fans. This time I will talk to you about an Isekai type fantasy anime a little different from most. This is a series that went practically unnoticed last season due to the huge competition, despite having a level of quality far above the others of its genre. On the other hand, it is an anime that at first glance may cause a bad impression because of its premise and main character, but when you give it a chance to watch it you will notice that it is better than it apparently is. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Michiro Ueyama, this anime adaptation was produced by the studio Aija-Do Animation Works. Meet a very particular and somewhat different Isekai anime.

Trailer & Review

Next, I will leave you the trailer of the anime:

Normally I don't usually talk about this kind of anime since they are not very much to my taste. Not to mention how many series there are in the anime world that are similar even in terms of titles, stories or protagonists; the fact that this one differs in terms of plot and what it appears to be is just a small footprint in a huge frame filled with a single generic color. This type of work only reaffirms my assumption of the absurdity that such generic stories with only a couple of differences between them can become a moderate success, even reaching the point of having an animated adaptation. Worst of all, most adaptations of Isekai works have a quality as mediocre as the level of audiences they achieve. But even with all this in mind, the number of Isekai anime that are being broadcast is not decreasing in the slightest. How many dozens of works similar to this and others within the same Isekai demographic are there today? How many will there still be in the future? Finding answers to these questions is as absurd as finding any originality in this type of animated series. That's why, as long as Isekai anime continue to be aired every season, I will continue to complain and give you my honest opinion with this kind of posts from time to time.

Starting with its story, a detail that I like about this anime and that makes it different from the others of the Isekai genre is the particular way of narrating its plot. We see that it revolves around our protagonist, who is a simple 52-year-old salaryman with a wife and a teenage daughter who likes otome video games (a type of Japanese video games where they mix romance with fantasy and countless common dialogues and scenarios). After a terrible accident trying to save a child, he gets trapped in the body of the villain of his daughter's favorite video game. A somewhat bizarre beginning -considering that there are Japanese works much more bizarre than this one-, but interesting at the same time for the turns of events and the situation in which the protagonist finds himself. Here the main question is how our bald character will impersonate the supposed villain of a game that has no experience playing it. It is here that we see the young Grace Auvergne with the conscience of a middle-aged man going through different situations in her daily life. We will also meet the other characters in this video game, such as the protagonist who is like the typical commoner with magical gifts and good education, the typical prince and future heir and the prince's other companions. Ah, it should also be mentioned that all this happens while they attend a prestigious magic academy.
To keep the story short, I'll just mention a couple of details that I liked about this anime. Starting with the way of narrating this work with the point of view of the protagonist inside the body of the young Grace Auvergne. But not only that, but we also have apart the point of view of the protagonist's wife and daughter, who are watching everything that happens on screen while they are playing the blissful otome video game. It's kind of like SAO mixed with magic, comedy and teenage school romance. Although speaking of teen romance, upon better viewing the twelve episodes that make up this series, I'm not sure if it has any particular sign of romance, at least not a typical romance that one normally sees in these types of works. What can be said is that it seems like the typical plot of the protagonist trying to play the villain while winning the trust and hearts of everyone around him with his words and good deeds. The second thing that strikes me about this anime is the amount of references and influence this work has with Otaku culture. I mention this because apparently this family (both the father who is into all this, the teenage daughter who knows very well the game she is in and his wife) are all Otaku. This is both funny and at the same time ironic, since the way of handling such a situation and even making mention or reference to other works apparently known among the Otaku culture is what is usually seen in this series.

So much for what I like about the story. Now, as for the characters there is not much to say beyond what has already been mentioned about them. Both the main character and the other supporting characters are particularly entertaining and funny in their own style. What I like about this anime in general is that its humor doesn't rely on double entendre jokes or awkward moments. Even the complete absence of fanservice lends an air of innocence and seriousness to this ironically funny series, considering that its premise is that of an older gentleman inside the body of a young female student (which said situation can lend itself to a lot of unnecessarily indecent things that can commonly be seen in other more popular Isekai anime). That this is just a case of some sort of identity and known worlds changing is more than enough for none of the people reading this post to bother watching something they don't want to, if they plan on watching the anime at all. Otherwise, there's not much else that can be mentioned in particular that stands out to me. The mix of fantasy with comedy and romance is the most striking thing, subtracting the scant amount of action it may have. In terms of character development we only see that of the protagonist, who doesn't show that much drastic or striking development, really.
Finally, I will mention the level of audiovisual quality of this anime. Without knowing beforehand the work of the studio that was in charge of this adaptation, it is a surprise for me to see that the anime has a visual quality that can be above most Isekai works of today. Both the character design and the level of visual detail, fluidity and vivid color palette are what stand out the most about this series. Especially in terms of the good use of effects, transitions and the mix of styles with environments or situations you can notice a very good quality between them. Clearly by having a plot and story much calmer than expected, without so much action or drama intertwined it is normal not to realize the level of quality and fluidity that has. However, there is the occasional occasion where good animation and spectacle can be enjoyed when it escapes from common or funny situations. It also has a very good soundtrack -something that may be the only thing I liked about this anime-, with an Opening and an Ending that are entertaining, dynamic and with somewhat catchy and moving songs. You can also listen to music throughout the episodes that give emotion, humor and feeling to every minute. In short, this anime can be good just to pass the time watching something a little different.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 as far as the fantasy and comedy genre is concerned.

Truck-kun act up again, lol. But omg, thanks for the review, I already forgot about this anime but i'm just waiting for it to finish the first time I see it. I should check the episode 1 first if i will like it. Its hard to like a new anime series bot coz every season, there's always something sismilar to some of them esp isekai genre. I like this genre but if the new releases couldn't even compare to the first, I will really be too kazy to finish then. Anyways, I hope this one is really different from the others.
I understand you; it's the same thing I criticized in the post about the isekai genre and how generic it is. That's why this anime might be interesting because it's different from most. If you give it a chance, you might like it or be entertained by its plot or style of humor, which is what's most contagious.
Thanks for the support.

I remembered watching this months ago, but it was still ongoing at that time so I let it finish airing. I really laughed when I read this part:
Like buuuurn! Sameeee—like you, I'm also not fond of isekai because most of them have the same generic and repetitive plot. But even though this anime is part of this genre, I still liked it because the MC was unconventional—definitely not like the usual pervy isekai MCs that's prevalent now. It's really a shame that it didn't get the appreciation it deserves but it was pretty understandable because it aired with some solid and popular anime.
And also this! This is what makes this anime more amazing because despite the absence of fan service, still it was entertaining and enjoyable. Btw, thanks for sharing. Your review was brutally honest and I love it!
I'm glad you liked it. It's true, after several years of watching anime on air you easily realize the genres and demographics where generic anime such as Isekai abound. Personally, I always criticize this in particular and I point it out whenever I talk about an Isekai anime that I particularly liked. And this is one of those cases where the protagonist and the plot in general are far removed from what one is used to seeing, which is appealing at the same time. However, as it is not the same, failed to receive a deserved audience. What impresses me is that the animation quality is so much better than mediocre adaptations like The Beginning After The End, for example.
Thank you very much for the support.
Yesssss, this...this is one of my biggest disappointments this year. I was definitely expecting that they would give justice or at least give a decent adaptation of its manhwa. I mean in one of the interviews, the creator trusted the adaptation prod so much, so I guessed that was a good sign, but expecting is really not good. The animation was so bad that a lot think it's just a ppt version of the manhwa with an equally mid art style. They look too scrawny and Sylvia's dragon form cracks me up. Like gooood what happened to her? It wasted all the hype I felt way back those months they announced the adaptation. And yes! The animation of this anime is far better than TBATE, and it's sad that it just had a little fanbase.
Btw, you're welcome ^=^
Exactly. And it's ironic that there are people among the fans of this manhwa who swear that TBATE is much better than Mushoku Tensei even. There were even people before its broadcast who said that it would be equal to or even better than Solo Leveling. What a disappointment, really. But I think this particular case is more due to either the original product and work not being famous or interesting enough for a good studio to animate it; or It is because the same studio in charge pocketed the budget and saved a lot of money with mediocre animation, thus making a good amount of money. I don't know, nothing is certain, but considering many similar cases, this is the worst I've seen within the Isekai demographic adaptations.
When I saw the first clips of the first episode on the internet, I decided not to watch it and waste my time with this anime. Something I value highly in a work is its audiovisual quality, regardless of whether it's an anime, a movie, or a television series. And the fact that there are people or even the creator of the work himself who say that this adaptation deserves some value or respect is a mockery to me, knowing the number of copies of this work of this same story within the Isekai and that the same studio has ruined the work with such an adaptation is more than enough to drop it, It doesn't matter if the story itself is good. It's like expecting to like a plate of food when the table and the entire place where you eat it is crap, it's not the same.
But hey, that's just my opinion. Thanks again for the support.
