I never expected to review this movie, honestly. Don't get me wrong, I liked it a lot because it was mostly funny, but the level of humor here is so absurd that it's hard to put into words. If you thought Ace Ventura was the most unbearable character Jim Carrey has played in his entire career, you definitely haven't seen Dumb and Dumber. Seriously, aside from 1994 being Carrey's year, with three of the best comedy films of his entire career (The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Dumb and Dumber), with the latter he has shown that he has no limits when it comes to humor.

Before delving into what kind of humor he possesses, I would first like to mention that the film has one of the best introductions of a pair of protagonists I have ever seen in my life. I give most of the credit to Jim Carrey, not only because I am his fan, but because he is definitely the one who makes you laugh the most from the first minute of the film. Just poking his head out of the limousine window to show off his bowl cut with his smile and broken tooth is more than enough of an introduction. Adding to this, Dumb and Dumber managed to fulfill the rule of the first 15 minutes with the sequence of Lloyd Christmas taking Mary to the airport and Harry Dunne taking some dogs.

Nunca esperé hacerle una reseña a esta película, sinceramente. No me malentiendan, me gustó mucho ya que fue divertida en gran parte, pero el nivel de humor es tan absurdo aquí que es difícil medirlo con palabras. Si pensaste que Ace Ventura era el personaje más insoportable que Jim Carrey ha interpretado en toda su carrera, definitivamente no has visto Dumb and Dumber. De verdad, aparte de que 1994 haya sido el año de Carrey al hacer tres de las mejores películas de comedia de toda su carrera (The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective y Dumb and Dumber), con esta última ha demostrado no tener ningún límite al tratarse de humor.

Antes de indagar en qué tipo de humor posee, quisiera primero mencionarles que la película tiene de las mejores introducciones de una pareja de protagonistas que he visto en mi vida. Le doy el mérito mayor a Jim Carrey, no solo por ser su fan, sino porque definitivamente es el que más risa da desde el primer minuto de la cinta. Con solo asomar su cabeza en la ventana de la limusina para mostrar su corte de cabello de plato con su sonrisa y diente roto ya es más que suficiente presentación. Sumando a esto, la regla de los primeros 15 minutos logró cumplirla Dumb and Dumber con la secuencia de Lloyd Christmas llevando a Mary al aeropuerto y Harry Dunne llevando a unos perros.

Let's talk a little about the plot, which begins with an unforgettable but uncomfortable encounter involving one of our protagonists, Lloyd Christmas. He takes Mary to the airport, but on the way he tries to strike up a conversation with her in an awkward and even disturbing way. After dropping her off at the airport and noticing that she has left a briefcase in the middle of the terminal, he gets out of the limousine, grabs the briefcase, and tries unsuccessfully to take it with him. This movie is not for everyone, I warn you, so if you are a sensitive person or don't like dark humor, then it's better to ignore it after reading this. No matter how hard you try, there's no need to look for meaning or logic in everything that happens in this movie. It could simply be defined—without spoilers—as a series of unfortunate events experienced by two idiot friends during their trip to Aspen, Colorado. They are the kind of protagonists who, rather than being unlucky, are the creators of the worst possible luck. The most absurd thing of all is that, despite the endless things they experience, nothing happens to them, as usual. So I don't know if it's luck or bad luck they have.

Hablemos un poco de dicha trama, la cual inicia con un inolvidable, pero a la vez incómodo encuentro de uno de nuestros protagonistas, Lloyd Christmas. Este lleva a Mary al aeropuerto, pero durante el camino intenta sacarle conversación de una manera incómoda y hasta preocupante. Luego de dejarla en el aeropuerto y notar que ella deja un maletín en medio del lugar, este baja de la limusina, agarra el maletín e intenta llevárselo sin éxito alguno. Lo que no sabe nuestro tonto Lloyd es que el maletín porta mucho dinero adentro, el cual es parte de un negocio con el cual están involucrados personas muy peligrosas.

Esta película no es para todo el mundo, les aviso, así que si eres una persona sensible o que no te gusta el humor negro entonces es mejor que ignores verla luego de leer esto. Por mucho que lo intentes, tampoco hace falta que le busques sentido o lógica a todo lo que sucede en esta película. Sencillamente se podría definir -sin spoilers- como una serie de eventos desafortunados que viven dos amigos idiotas durante su viaje a Aspen, Colorado. Son de esas parejas de protagonistas que, en vez de tener mala suerte, son más bien los creadores de la peor de las suertes posible. Lo más absurdo de todo es que, a pesar del sinfín de cosas que viven, no les pasa nada, lo típico. Así que no sé si es suerte o mala suerte lo que tienen.

What I do know is that both Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne will experience one of the craziest and most surreal journeys we will see in a comedy film from the 90s. I know it's not the only film featuring these two actors and characters, but I'd rather imagine that it is for now, since nothing good is said about the other two films in this franchise. Apart from Jim Carrey's great performance, the film also features Jeff Daniels, who managed to demonstrate an innate talent for absurd comedy. The mix that these two geniuses of humor create is fantastic and at the same time the most absurd, annoying, and stupid thing you can imagine.

One of the things that worried me at first, after watching this movie again after a long time, was that it lasts almost two hours. But after watching it, I felt that it was worth the effort, especially because I had a good time... a very uncomfortable one, but that's the point. Because yes, there are scenes where it's almost impossible not to want to look away or cover your eyes out of embarrassment at what these two fools are doing. There are also scenes where you can't stop laughing, even when you know it's not right. The humor in this movie is quite suggestive, with many references and double entendres, in addition to the absurd and silly jokes and dialogues between Lloyd and Harry.

Lo que sí sé es que tanto Lloyd Christmas como Harry Dunne vivirán uno de los viajes más alocados y surrealistas que veremos en una película de comedia de los años 90. Sé que no es la única película de estos dos actores y personajes, pero quisiera mejor imaginarme que sí lo es por este instante ya que nada bueno se habla de las otras dos cintas que sacó está franquicia. Aparte de la gran actuación de Jim Carrey, la película también cuenta con la participación de Jeff Daniels, quien logró demostrar un talento innato en cuanto a comedia absurda se refiere. La mezcla que hacen estos dos genios del humor es fantástico y a la vez de lo más absurdo, molesto y estúpido que te puedes imaginar.

Una de las cosas que me preocupó al principio, luego de volver a ver esta película después de mucho tiempo, fue que dura casi dos horas. Pero luego de verla sentí que valió toda la pena el esfuerzo, sobre todo porque me lo pasé bien… bien incómodo, pero ese es el objetivo. Porque sí, hay escenas donde es casi imposible no querer voltear o taparte los ojos de la vergüenza que causan este par de tontos. También hay escenas donde no puedes parar de reírte, incluso cuando sabes que no es correcto. El humor que tiene esta película es bastante sugerente, con muchas referencias y mensajes de doble sentido, además de los chistes y diálogos absurdos y tontos que tienen Lloyd y Harry.

Although I don't have many memories of Dumb and Dumber from when I was little, I do remember seeing it at least a couple of times. Above all, I remember its unforgettable ending, which gives such a typical yet funny conclusion to this pair of idiots. I won't deny that, watching it again now, I felt quite uncomfortable for most of the movie, but more than because it's bad or because of the jokes, I mean because of the particular character played by Jim Carrey. You can't easily relate to him, no, and if you do, I honestly don't know what to say to you without offending you personally. The character of Lloyd Christmas is one of the worst, and I say that for many reasons.

Without going into too much detail, I'll just say that from the beginning we see that he is, apart from being dumb and stupid, someone who is annoying and unbearable. Even with his dumb partner Harry, he stands out in a big way by irritating him with his practical jokes and irreverent attitude. Apart from this, he has that serious problem with women, which is normal for these two, being a pair of serial idiots. But the worst thing about this is that, despite everything, Lloyd becomes a dirty creep by taking advantage of his partner's kindness on more than ten occasions. This is the kind of character who is one of the protagonists of this comedy film.

A pesar de no tener muchos recuerdos de Dumb and Dumber cuando era pequeño, sí recuerdo haberla visto aunque sea un par de veces. Sobre todo recuerdo su inolvidable final, el cual le da ese cierre tan típico y a la vez gracioso a esta pareja de tontos. No voy a negar que, al volverla a ver ahora, me sentí bastante incómodo en gran parte de la película, pero más que por ser mala o por los chistes que tiene, lo digo es por el personaje particular que interpreta Jim Carrey. No puedes llegar a compaginar fácilmente con él, no, y si lo haces sinceramente no sé qué decirte sin que te ofendas personalmente. El personaje de Lloyd Christmas es de los peores y lo digo por muchas razones.

Sin llegar a dar muchos detalles, solo diré que desde el principio vemos que es, aparte de tonto y tope, alguien pesado e insoportable. Incluso con su tonto compañero Harry se destaca en sobremanera al hacerlo irritar con sus bromas pesadas y su actitud irreverente. Aparte de esto, tiene ese problema serio con las mujeres, algo que es normal que tengan estos dos al ser un par de idiotas en serie. Pero lo peor de esto es que, a pesar de todo, Lloyd llega a ser un sucio rastrero al aprovecharse de la amabilidad de su compañero en más de diez ocasiones. Este es el tipo de personaje que es uno de los protagonistas de esta película de comedia.

So you tell me if you can be friends with someone like him. But hey, since it's a movie, it's normal for all this to come across as pure stale and absurd humor from start to finish. In the end, it just seeks to entertain with a couple of characters straight out of hell itself, idiots and incompetents. And I admit, it made me laugh from start to finish because it's Jim Carrey, and everything he does is done in a way that makes it hard not to laugh. From his gestures and expressions to his comments and bad jokes. All of these things that define him are taken to a much heavier and more unbearable level in this movie. He doesn't make you laugh with exaggerated facial expressions or actions, no, but with his witticisms.

Just to give one example, one of the scenes that simply blew my mind was what he did with the dead bird, which was completely crazy. On the other hand, something I've noticed slightly is how similar several scenes or jokes in this movie are to those in other movies or series I've seen before. I wouldn't be surprised if Dumb and Dumber has influenced more than one person over the last three decades. Another thing to note is that the film has its romantic side, although with the humor it has, it's hard to see the good side of everything that happens. When we see our protagonists interacting with any woman they come across, it's easy to expect the worst.

Al final solo se busca entretener con una pareja de personajes salidos del propio averno de los idiotas e ineptos. Y lo admito, me dió mucha risa de inicio a fin ya que es Jim Carrey y todo lo que hace lo hace de una manera que es difícil no reírse por ello. Desde sus gestos y expresiones hasta sus comentarios y chistes malos. Todo esto que lo identifica lo lleva a un nivel mucho más pesado e insoportable en esta película. No te hace reír con muecas o acciones exageradas, no, sino por sus ocurrencias.

Solo para poner un ejemplo, una de las escenas que simplemente me dejaron loco fue lo que hizo con el pájaro muerto, una completa locura. Por otro lado, algo que he notado levemente es lo parecidos que son varias escenas o chistes que tiene esta película con los que tienen otras cintas o series que he visto antes. No me sorprendería que Dumb and Dumber haya influenciado a más de uno en estas tres décadas. Otra cosa a destacar es que la película tiene su lado romántico, aunque con el humor que tiene es difícil verle un lado bueno a todo lo que sucede. Cuando vemos a nuestros protagonistas interactuar con cualquier mujer con la que se llegan a encontrar es fácil esperarse lo peor.

Other than that, I don't know what else to say about this movie, honestly. We can surely draw countless valuable lessons for our daily lives from it. It's literally like watching almost two hours of footage full of things you should NOT say or do if you want to do well in life. Although the fact that they both end up alive at the end, after everything they went through, is as absurd as it is impressive. Even ending up in jail would be more understandable after everything they did. But one thing I can say for sure is that Lloyd and Harry have a great friendship, really. Despite their mistakes and deceptions, they stick together until the end, and I think that's a good thing.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Dumb and Dumber. Without expecting a big production, it's clear that it has at least a decent level of quality in terms of direction and photography. The simple shots and movements with scenes and effects are very basic, at least in the eyes of a movie fan like me. I'm not complaining about anything, not even that the birds are fake in this movie. The mix of memorable performances with resources, materials, costumes, and makeup is most striking. There are also the sound effects, although I prefer to highlight the soundtrack, which is fascinating. Anyway, here's this Jim Carrey movie, which I don't recommend if you're sensitive.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the comedy genre.

De resto, no sé qué más opinar de esta película, la verdad. Seguramente podemos sacar un sinfín de lecciones valiosas para nuestra vida diaria. Es literalmente como ver un metraje de casi dos horas repleto de cosas que NO deberías de decir ni hacer para que te vaya bien. Aunque el hecho de que ambos terminen siquiera vivos al final, luego de todo lo que pasaron, es tan absurdo como impresionante a la vez. Siquiera que terminaran en la cárcel sería lo más entendible luego de todo lo que hicieron también. Pero algo que sí puedo afirmar es la gran amistad que tienen Lloyd y Harry, de verdad. A pesar de los errores y engaños, siguen juntos hasta el final y eso creo que es bueno.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Dumb and Dumber. Sin esperar una gran producción, es evidente que tenga un nivel de calidad siquiera decente en cuanto a dirección y fotografía. Los planos y movimientos simples con escenas y efectos son muy básicos, al menos a la vista de un fanático del cine como yo. No me quejo de nada, ni siquiera de que los pájaros incluso sean falsos en esta película. La mezcla de interpretaciones memorables con recursos, materiales, vestimenta y maquillajes es de lo más llamativo. También están los efectos de sonido, aunque prefiero destacar más de la banda sonora que tiene, la cual es fascinante. En fin, aquí les dejo esta película de Jim Carrey que no te la recomiendo si eres alguien sensible.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
