In case I didn't make it clear at the beginning, this is not a normal review, but one of those critiques that I usually avoid. Before speaking ill of an anime, I normally prefer not to do so and leave it aside so as not to waste my time. However, this isn't the first time I've spoken ill of a generic RomCom, and it's been a while since I've done so. And since there haven't been that many anime of this style aired this season (thank God), I'll take this opportunity to talk to you about Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive? and give my honest opinion to those who still don't know what I think of generic teenage romance stories.

The only thing that caught my attention and made me watch this anime is that it was produced by J.C. Staff, which is known for having a wide repertoire of anime of different types and genres. In the past, it has produced series such as Honey Lemon Soda (highly recommended), which is one of the best school romance anime I've seen. So I was hoping for something at least minimally decent and interesting in this new work. But unfortunately, that's not the case. Instead, I've seen the same generic teenage love story with the same clichés and characters as always.

Por si no lo dejé claro al principio, esta no es una reseña normal, sino una crítica de esas que acostumbro a evitar. Antes de hablar mal de un anime, normalmente prefiero no hacerlo y dejarlo de lado para no perder mi tiempo. Sin embargo, no es la primera vez que hablo mal de un RomCom genérico y llevo tiempo que no lo hago. Y como en la temporada pasada no se han emitido tantos animes de este estilo (gracias a Dios), entonces aprovecharé para hablarles de Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive? y dejarles mi opinión sincera a los que aún no sepan qué es lo que pienso de las historias genéricas de romance adolescente.

Lo único que me ha llamado la atención e hizo que viera este anime es que la produjo el estudio J.C. Staff, el cual es conocido por tener un amplio repertorio de animes hechos de distintos tipos y géneros. En las veces anteriores ha producido series como Honey Lemon Soda (súper recomendada) que es de los mejores animes de romance escolar que he visto. Así que esperaba algo aunque sea mínimamente decente e interesante en esta nueva obra. Pero lamentablemente no es el caso, sino que he visto la misma historia genérica de amor adolescente con los mismos clichés y personajes de siempre.

On the one hand, it may be interesting for those who like romance to see how a common case of love between friends and classmates affects their friendship and all that. But otherwise, there is nothing good to be gained from this. Mind you, I'm not saying it's badly done, far from it. It's a very decent adaptation of what you'd expect from a modern romantic comedy. However, the problem comes when they repeat the same story, the same love triangle cliché, the typical predetermined characters, and the typical teenage humor with its jokes, misunderstandings, and awkward moments.

As I mentioned above, the story revolves around Yuu Natsume and his best friend Himari Inuzuka. They are the typical pair of friends who deep down have feelings for each other, but hide them behind jokes and hints. The appearance of his first love in his life puts our protagonist at the typical crossroads of who to choose. The worst part of all this is not how cliché it sounds, but the way each character remains in their generic role in such an absurd way that it makes no sense. Starting with Rion Enomoto, who is the typical female character who takes a back seat even though she has feelings for the protagonist and wants to be with him.

Por un lado puede que sea interesante para los que les gusta el romance ver cómo un caso común de un amor entre amigos y compañeros de clase afecta su relación de amistad y todo eso. Pero de resto, no hay nada bueno que se pueda extraer de aquí. Ojo, no digo que esté mal hecho ni mucho menos, es una adaptación muy decente hasta lo que se espera de una comedia romántica actual. Sin embargo, el problema viene cuando repiten la misma historia, el mismo cliché del triángulo amoroso, los típicos personajes predeterminados y el típico humor adolescente con sus bromas, malentendidos y momentos incómodos de siempre.

Como ya les mencioné arriba, la historia gira en torno a Yuu Natsume y su mejor amiga Himari Inuzuka. Son la típica pareja de amigos que en el fondo sienten algo por el otro, pero lo esconden entre bromas e indirectas. La aparición de su primer amor en su vida hace que nuestro protagonista se encuentre en la típica encrucijada de a quién escoger. Lo peor de todo esto no es lo cliché que suena ya, sino la forma en la que cada personaje se queda en su papel genérico de una manera tan absurda que no tiene sentido. Empezando por Rion Enomoto, quien es el típico personaje femenino que pasa a segundo plano a pesar de que siente algo por el protagonista y quiere estar con él.

With regard to Himari Inuzuka, the issue is even worse, as she is the typical sociable girl who always teases the protagonist and is all over him all the time, giving clear signs that she likes him, but she jokes with him and even becomes annoying and selfish at times. She is one of those girls who, because they believe themselves to be attractive, can do whatever they want and play with others without expecting any consequences. Obviously, we see the consequences of her actions throughout the series. Finally, the protagonist, Yuu Natsume, is the typical male character who you don't expect to do much at any point, but in the end, he surprises you when he makes certain decisions.

It's a shame that the story is like any generic RomCom that goes from one situation to another with awkward moments, plot twists, somewhat dramatic scenes, and many other things, only to end up with everything the same as it was at the beginning. Well, I don't really know how it all ends, but it's annoying in the end because you can see that the story extends beyond what was adapted to the anime in order to see what will happen in the future and surely regret it in the end. It's happened several times before, and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened again. That's why I hate anime of this style.

Con respecto a Himari Inuzuka es peor la cuestión, ya que es la típica chica sociable que siempre se mete con el protagonista y está encima de él todo el tiempo y da claras señales de que le gusta, pero bromea con él y llega incluso a ser pesada y egoísta a veces. Es de esas chicas que por creerse atractivas pueden hacer lo que quieran y jugar con los demás sin esperar ninguna consecuencia. Obviamente, dichas consecuencias de sus actos son las que vemos a lo largo de la serie. Por último, el protagonista, Yuu Natsume es el típico personaje masculino del cual no esperas que haga gran cosa en ningún momento, pero al final sorprende cuando toma ciertas decisiones.

Lástima que la historia es como cualquier RomCom genérico que pasa de una situación a otra con momentos incómodos, giros de trama, escenas un tanto dramáticas y muchas cosas más para al final terminar con todo de la misma forma como estuvo al principio. O bueno, no sé realmente cómo es que termina todo, pero es molesto esto al final ya que se ve que la historia se extiende más allá de lo que se adaptó al anime para así llegar a ver qué es lo que sucederá en el futuro y seguramente lamentarse al final. Ha pasado varias veces antes y no me sorprendería que volviera a suceder. Así que por eso detesto los anime de este estilo.

Now, surely there will be someone among those reading this who will ask themselves the following question: if you hate watching this type of anime so much, then why do you keep watching it? Honestly, I don't know how to answer that, since it's one of those things you hate, but I still watch it because it's predictable and easy to enjoy. It's like American comedy movies that have no quality in terms of scripts, characters, production, or even story, but you still watch them to pass the time and enjoy yourself. Like a hamburger, which is not nutritious at all, but there are still those who like to eat them from time to time. That's what generic RomComs are like for me.

Of course, the negative details don't stop when we talk about teen romance and comedy anime. Especially when the anime itself seeks to sexualize its female characters from time to time with completely unnecessary shots and scenes. I'm referring to the famous Fanservice, which is also present in this anime. Not to mention the type of humor used, which is almost always absurd jokes and double entendres. The way these types of series are marketed in the East and West is something to think about sometimes. Even today, these types of works are still very popular in the anime industry.

Ahora seguramente habrá uno de entre los que están leyéndome que se pregunte lo siguiente: si tanto detestas ver este tipo de animes, ¿entonces por qué lo sigues viendo? Sinceramente, no sé qué responder ya que es de esas cosas que detestas, pero igualmente lo miro por lo predecible y fácil que es disfrutar de estas obras. Es como las películas de comedia estadounidenses que no tienen ninguna calidad en cuanto a guiones, personajes, producción ni historia siquiera; pero aún así los ves para pasar el rato y disfrutarlo. Como una hamburguesa, que no es para nada nutritiva, pero igual hay quienes les gusta comerlas de vez en cuando. Así sería el RomCom genérico para mí.

Aunque, claro, los detalles negativos no paran cuando hablamos de animes de romance y comedia adolescentes. Sobre todo cuando el mismo anime busca sexualizar a sus personajes femeninos de vez en cuando con planos y escenas completamente innecesarias. Eso, me refiero al famoso Fanservice y es algo que también posee este anime. Sin contar el tipo de humor que se maneja, el cual casi siempre se trata de chistes absurdos y de doble sentido. La forma en la cual se venden este tipo de series en oriente y occidente es algo del cual hay que pensar a veces. Ya que aún al día de hoy es muy popular este tipo de obras en la industria del anime.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this anime. With J.C. Staff being the studio in charge of this adaptation, it was to be expected that the quality would be at least a little higher than usual for anime of this style. One detail that greatly affects a work is its quality and production level, something that many generic RomComs largely lack. However, in the case of Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive?, it seems to deliver what is expected, showing us decent visual quality, at least.

Details such as the character design, animation style, bright and vivid color palette, use of lighting, and visual design of locations and environments are top-notch. Its fluidity is not particularly remarkable, but it doesn't look too bad either. It doesn't overuse simple animations for funny moments and manages to balance the characters' expressions and reactions well. The sound effects are fine, but what stands out most is the soundtrack. It sets the mood well and conveys what it's going for at the right time. In short, this anime is just another generic RomCom that I'm leaving here in case you feel like watching it.

Personally, I give it a rating of 6.5/10 in terms of the romance and comedy genres.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. Siendo J.C. Staff el estudio que estuvo a cargo de esta adaptación, era de esperarse al menos un nivel de calidad un poco mayor de lo común entre animes de este estilo. Un detalle el cual afecta mucho a una obra es la calidad y el nivel de producción que posee, cosa que muchos RomCom genéricos carecen mayormente. Sin embargo, en el caso de Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive? parece que cumple con lo que se espera mostrándonos una calidad decente a nivel visual, al menos.

Detalles como el diseño de los personajes, el estilo de animación, la paleta de colores vivos y brillantes, el uso de las luces y el diseño visual de los lugares y entornos son de lo mejor. Su fluidez no es que sea bastante notable, pero tampoco se ve tan mal. No abusa mucho de las animaciones sencillas para momentos graciosos y consigue equilibrar bien las expresiones o reacciones de los personajes. Los efectos de sonido están bien, pero lo que más se destaca es la banda sonora. Esta consigue ambientar bien los momentos y transmite lo que busca a tiempo. En resumen, este anime es un RomCom genérico más que dejó por aquí por si te animas a ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 6.5/10 en lo que respecta al género del romance y la comedia.
