As some of you probably already know, I'm a fan of both mystery and drama (more than the rest of the genres, to be honest). That's why, the moment I found out that the anime I'm telling you about today mixes both genres, it caused me some excitement that I couldn't pass up this opportunity. Clearly, it's not what I sincerely expected when I started watching it on air earlier this year. The premise, while it caught my attention a lot for being practically a mix of Dr. House with Sherlock Holmes, it wasn't until several episodes later that I started to get a bit disappointed by the pacing and the different cases seen in this series. I'm not saying it's a bad anime, as even among these genres it has a unique touch by mixing medical cases with mysteries and murders. What I disliked rather was the way they mixed all this together, leaving much to be desired in certain episodes and taking away the excitement from one moment to the next to end the same way it started. While it is true that it has its plot twists, its moments of tension, sadness and emotion; in the end I feel that there were moments in which they did not know how to exploit the characters or the plot itself better.

Como seguramente algunos ya sabrán, soy fan tanto del misterio como del drama (más que del resto de géneros, la verdad). Es por eso que, al momento de saber que el anime del cual les estoy hablando hoy mezcla ambos géneros, me causó cierta emoción que no pude dejar pasar esta oportunidad. Claramente, no es lo que esperaba sinceramente cuando lo empecé a ver en emisión a principios de este año. La premisa, si bien me llamó mucho la atención por ser prácticamente una mezcla de Dr. House con Sherlock Holmes, no fue sino luego de varios episodios más adelante que empecé a decepcionarme un poco por el ritmo y los distintos casos que se ven en esta serie. No digo que sea un mal anime, ya que incluso entre éstos géneros tiene un toque único al mezclar casos médicos con misterios y asesinatos. Lo que me disgustó más bien fue la forma en la que mezclaron todo esto, dejando mucho que desear en ciertos episodios y quitándonos la emoción de un momento a otro para así finalizar igual como empezó. Si bien es cierto que tiene sus giros de trama, sus momentos de tensión, tristeza y emoción; al final siento que hubo momentos en los que no supieron explotar mejor a los personajes o a la misma trama en sí.

Her partner and assistant, Yu Takanashi (also known as "Kotori" by Takao) accompanies her in her various "adventures" where they are almost always in danger or get into trouble for getting entangled in cases where no one called them. This is practically what this series is about, in broad strokes, which makes us compare this anime to the famous Dr. House series and the literary work of Sherlock Holmes. However, they are only examples of a simple vestige of similarity that they have with each other. The truth is that this anime series seems to try to mix both drama and mystery and medical cases in a not so original work. While I don't admit that it is 100% original (I'll leave that up to everyone's opinion), it can be said that this series is not as authentic as it pretends to be.

Starting with the cases of the patients about to die, I found them somewhat familiar to the ones you can see in the Dr. House series (of course, with the difference that here the patients almost always die and the cases are solved some time later). But already when we talk about the characters we can notice certain quite evident similarities. For example, in the case of the main character, Dr. Takao Ameku is like a female version of Dr. House, but Japanese and with the appearance of a teenager. Both her wit when diagnosing and analyzing patients and their environments reminds us of the old, drug-addicted and eccentric doctor from the TV series. On the other hand, his obsession with solving different murder mysteries with the police gives us a certain sense of eccentricity like that of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. What I don't like about all this strange mix is her appearance, being that of a high school girl when she is probably the oldest of all the characters we meet in this series. This detail seems to be more a problem of the creators themselves, I honestly do not understand what is the obsession that many Japanese have with making female characters with appearances of girls or teenagers, the truth. But well, this is a separate case.

Para empezar, detengámonos en lo que nos intentan contar con su historia, siendo esta la historia de la Dra. Takao Ameku, quien es una genio de la medicina, además de ser toda una excéntrica. Ella aprovecha su departamento de patología para inmiscuirse en diferentes casos de asesinatos y muertes que no tienen explicación. Esto lo hace como excusa para satisfacer dicha obsesión que tienen con estos casos y así lograr resolverlos por su propia cuenta. Su compañero y asistente, Yu Takanashi (también conocido como “Kotori” por parte de Takao) la acompaña en sus diversas ”aventuras” en donde casi siempre están en peligro o se meten en problemas por enredarse en casos en los que nadie los llamó. Prácticamente de esto es lo que trata esta serie, a grandes rasgos, lo cual hace que comparemos este anime con la famosa serie de Dr. House y la obra literaria de Sherlock Holmes. Sin embargo, son solo ejemplos de un simple vestigio de similitud que se tienen entre sí. La verdad es que esta serie animada parece que intenta mezclar tanto el drama como el misterio y los casos médicos en una obra no tan original. Si bien no admito que lo sea al 100% (ya eso dejaré que cada quien opine lo que sea al respecto), se puede decir que esta serie no es tan auténtica como simula ser realmente.

Empezando por los casos de los pacientes a punto de morir, se me hicieron un tanto familiares a los que uno puede ver en la serie de Dr. House (claro, con la diferencia de que aquí los pacientes casi siempre mueren y los casos son resueltos tiempo después). Pero ya cuando hablamos de los personajes podemos notar ciertas similitudes bastante evidentes. Por ejemplo, en el caso de la protagonista, la Dra. Takao Ameku es como una versión femenina del Dr. House, pero japonesa y con la apariencia de una adolescente. Tanto su ingenio al momento de diagnosticar y analizar a los pacientes y sus entornos nos hace recordar al viejo, drogadicto y excéntrico doctor de la serie de televisión. Por otro lado, su obsesión con resolver diferentes misterios de asesinatos con la policía nos da cierta sensación de excentricidad como la del famoso detective Sherlock Holmes. Lo que no me agrada de toda esta mezcla extraña es su apariencia, siendo la de una chica de secundaria cuando seguramente es la que más edad tiene de entre todos los personajes que conocemos en esta serie. Ya este detalle parece ser más un problema de los mismos creadores, que sinceramente no comprendo cuál es la obsesión que tienen muchos japoneses con hacer personajes femeninos con apariencias de niñas o adolescentes, la verdad. Pero bueno, esto ya es un caso aparte.

The sense of curiosity, tension and suspense that generates these episodes are somewhat similar to the mythical Dr. House series (I mention it again because it is the closest reference I have for this animated series). However, there are other cases in which it seems that they only develop the main character, since that is where the drama comes in. Yes, these dramatic episodes full of feelings that can easily make you cry are also part of this show. We can even draw certain life lessons among all that we see in its 12 episodes of duration. All in all, it is a show that will entertain anyone who is a fan of both mystery and drama. But not just any kind of drama, but hospital drama, something that is not treated much in this industry.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual section that this series has. Taking into account that it has been produced by a studio that does not stand out much for having a similar level to big competitors such as MAPPA, CloverWorks, Wit Studio, White Fox, among others; neither can it be completely dismissed due to its moderate career in the industry during these last decades animating romance, drama and fantasy work. In this case we can say that this adaptation is one of his best produced works. And we can notice it with the level of visual quality it has from its first episodes with its animation, style, character design and visual effects. Even in the use of clear and bright color palettes, fluidity and good use of planes and transitions we can notice the good work that this anime has. Of course, not everything is perfect, since at certain times you can notice a certain drop in quality in terms of fluidity and animation of certain specific scenes. As for sound effects there is not much to highlight either, only the soundtrack that may be the most remarkable thing the anime has to offer. I say this especially with its Opening that is an audiovisual masterpiece with a quite pleasant background music to listen to. In short, this anime is for those who are fans of mystery, mostly medical cases with some drama and a touch of action.

Personally, I give it a 7.5/10 rating as far as the drama and mystery genre is concerned.

Sin embargo, hay otros casos en los que parece que solo cumplen con desarrollar al personaje principal, ya que es allí donde el drama entra en acción. Si, estos episodios dramáticos repletos de sentimientos que te pueden hacer llorar fácilmente son también parte de esta obra. Incluso podemos sacar ciertas lecciones de vida entre todo lo que vemos en sus 12 episodios de duración. En definitiva es una obra que cumple con entretener a cualquiera que sea fanático tanto del misterio como del drama. Pero no cualquier tipo de drama, sino del drama en hospitales, algo que no se trata mucho en esta industria.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual que tiene esta serie. Teniendo en cuenta que ha sido producida por un estudio que no se destaca mucho por tener un nivel similar a grandes competidores como MAPPA, CloverWorks, Wit Studio, White Fox, entre otros; tampoco puede ser descartado por completo debido a su moderada carrera en la industria durante estas últimas décadas animando obra de romance, drama y fantasía. En este caso podemos decir que esta adaptación es de sus obras mejor producidas. Y lo podemos notar con el nivel de calidad visual que tiene desde sus primeros episodios con su animación, estilo, diseño de personajes y efectos visuales. Incluso en el uso de paletas de colores claros y brillantes, fluidez y buen uso de planos y transiciones se puede notar el buen trabajo que tiene este anime. Claro, no todo es perfecto, ya que en ciertos momentos se puede notar cierto bajón de calidad en cuanto a fluidez y animación de ciertas escenas puntuales. En cuanto a efectos de sonido no hay mucho que destacar tampoco, solamente su banda sonora que puede que sea de lo más destacable que tiene el anime para ofrecer. Lo digo sobre todo con su Opening que es toda una obra maestra audiovisual con una música de fondo bastante agradable para escuchar. En resumen, este anime es para los que son fans del misterio, más que nada de los casos médicos con algo de drama y un toque de acción.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género del drama y el misterio.
