A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

We're back with Slice of Life, and believe it or not, this anime is part of this interesting genre. With its unique blend of renegade ninjas and serial killers, this story is simply about two girls trying to live a quiet life in a city in Japan. This isn't the first time we've seen this in a Slice of Life anime. I've mentioned before that there are works that mix fantasy, science fiction, action, and even supernatural elements with Slice of Life. One of the most popular examples is Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, which is about a dragon who moves in with a simple civilian to work as a maid in her apartment.

Apart from this anime gem I just mentioned, I've seen very few Slice of Life anime since I started talking about anime on the internet. While it's not as popular a genre as action, fantasy, or romance, it has managed to rank very well in several rankings around the world thanks to fantastic works and interesting stories. That's why last year I decided to give more opportunities to these types of works that are not very relevant or well-known in this industry. But as fun as it was to watch, I didn't decide to talk about A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof at the time.

Volvemos con los Slice of Life y, aunque no lo creas, este anime es parte de este interesante género. Con su mezcla particular de ninjas renegados con asesinas seriales, esta historia no es más que la vida de dos chicas intentando vivir una vida tranquila en una ciudad de Japón. No es la primera vez que vemos esto en un Slice of Life, ya les he mencionado antes que hay obras que mezclan fantasía, ciencia ficción, acción y hasta elementos sobrenaturales con el Slice of Life. Uno de los casos más populares es el de Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, el cual trata de una dragona que se muda con una simple civil para trabajar como sirvienta en su departamento.

Lejos de esta joya de anime que les acabo de mencionar, he visto muy pocos animes Slice of Life desde que empecé con esto de hablar sobre animes en internet. Si bien no es un género tan popular como la acción, la fantasía o el romance; sí es cierto que se ha logrado posicionar muy bien en varios rankings del mundo gracias a obras fantásticas e historias interesantes. Es por eso que el año pasado decidí darle más oportunidad a este tipo de obras poco relevantes o desconocidas en esta industria. Pero por muy divertida que fue verla, no me decidí hablar sobre A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof en su momento.

The reason in this case is simple: too much Fanservice. Yes, I know this isn't surprising in itself, since the vast majority of anime (whether popular or not) use this technique in almost all their adaptations. But in the case of this anime that I'm bringing you today, the use of Fanservice in most of its episodes is somewhat excessive. The only reason I can see for this is that they use said Fanservice as a comedic resource for the work itself. Remember that we are talking about the story of a renegade and useless ninja who tries to live a normal life in the apartment of a high school student who works as a serial killer.

That said, each episode is as random as you're going to find in this anime. Without much to add, beyond its remarkable animation produced by one of the largest studios in the industry, there is its particular black comedy. That's right, here you won't see the absurd or light humor that is common in this type of Slice of Life anime. As you would expect from the story of a ninja living with a murderer, the humor here is as stale, dark, and spicy as it gets. The most amazing thing is the way the anime mixes this type of humor with that "Moe" style, or whatever you want to call it.

La razón en este caso es simple: mucho Fanservice. Si, sé que esto no es una sorpresa de por sí ya que la gran mayoría de animes (ya sean populares o no) utilizan este recurso en casi todas sus adaptaciones. Pero en el caso de este anime que les traigo hoy llega a ser un tanto excesivo el uso del Fanservice en la mayoría de episodios que tiene. La única razón que le puedo ver a esto es que utilizan dicho Fanservice como un recurso cómico para la misma obra. Recuerden que estamos hablando de la historia de una ninja renegada e inútil que intenta vivir una vida común en el apartamento de una estudiante de preparatoria como asesina serial.

Eso sí, cada episodio es de lo más random que van a encontrar en este anime. Sin mucho que agregar, más allá de su destacable animación producida por uno de los estudios más grandes de esta industria, está su particular comedia negra. Así es, aquí no verás un humor absurdo o ligero como es común ver en este tipo de animes Slice of Life. Tal y como se espera de la historia de una ninja viviendo con una asesina, el humor que se maneja aquí es de lo más rancio, negro y picante que se puede encontrar. Lo más alucinante es la forma en la que el anime mezcla éste tipo de humor con ese estilo tan “Moe” o como se llame.

In the very first episode, we see how our protagonist, Satoko, is treated like trash by our young assassin, Konoha Koga, who decides to help her by giving her only the leftovers from what she ate at a restaurant and a glass of water. On a street, they encounter a ninja who wants to kill Satoko because she ran away from her village, which makes her a renegade. After an epic and short battle between our useless ninja and her enemy, Konoha appears to finish her off in an instant. Konoha thus proves to have an innate talent for killing, but the problem is that she doesn't know how to cover her tracks.

That's why, seeing that Satoko has the ability to turn people into piles of leaves, Konoha decides to take her home to live with her and protect her in exchange for her help cleaning up the bodies she leaves behind after each job she does, thereby helping her rise in rank. After this, what we see in the following episodes until the end is our protagonist being chased by assassin ninjas while being protected by Konoha and trying to live a normal life with her. However, being a renegade and useless ninja, it will be difficult for her not to get into trouble and cause disasters.

Justamente en el primer episodio vemos cómo nuestra protagonista, Satoko, es tratada como basura por parte de nuestra joven asesina, Konoha Koga, quien decide ayudarla dándole solo las sobras de lo que comió en un restaurante y un vaso de agua. En una calle, se topan con una ninja que busca acabar con Satoko debido a que ella se escapó de su aldea, lo cual la convierte en una renegada. Luego de una épica y corta batalla entre nuestra inútil ninja y su enemiga, Konoha aparece para acabar con ella en solo un instante. Konoha demuestra así tener un talento innato para matar, pero el problema es que no sabe cómo eliminar su rastro.

Es por eso que, al ver que Satoko tiene la habilidad de convertir a la gente en una montaña de hojas, Konoha decide llevársela a su casa para que viva con ella y la proteja cambio de que ella le ayude a limpiar los cuerpos que deja en cada encargo que tiene y así subir de rango. Luego de esto, lo que vemos en los siguientes episodios hasta el final son a nuestra protagonista siendo perseguida por ninjas asesinas mientras es protegida por Konoha e intenta vivir una vida normal con ella. Sin embargo, al ser una ninja renegada e inútil, será difícil para ella no meterse en problemas y causar desastres.

The first thing that stands out is the visuals. Apart from the fact that we only see girls/women, the anime has a very cute style for a story about a fugitive ninja and a serial killer. The unique personalities of each character see a certain dynamic between Satoko and Konoha that is quite appealing and entertaining. Obviously, there is no shortage of dark humor, as well as Fanservice. Being a young and innocent ninja living in a city, she is easily influenced by all kinds of people to do questionable things.

You may or may not like them, but each character we see in this anime is designed to make you laugh and enjoy crazy or random moments. Although it resembles a sitcom, the anime actually has a story that slowly unfolds over the course of its episodes. We also see some development in the relationship between our protagonists, as well as learn a little about the past of one of them. Another thing to note is the amount of satire and references this anime makes to popular culture and certain customs or habits that exist in real life.

Lo primero que se destaca es lo visual, aparte de que veremos solo a puras chicas/mujeres, el anime posee un estilo muy tierno para tratarse de la historia de una ninja fugitiva y una asesina serial. Las personalidades tan particulares de cada una es algo destacable también debido a que vemos cierta dinámica entre Satoko y Konoha que atrae y entretiene bastante. Obviamente, el humor negro no falta en ninguna ocasión, así como también sucede con el Fanservice. El ser una joven e inocente ninja viviendo en una ciudad es fácilmente influenciada por todo tipo de gente para hacer cosas que son hasta cuestionables.

Puede que te caigan bien o puede que no, pero cada personaje que vemos en este anime está hecho para que pases un rato entre risas y momentos locos o randoms. Si bien se parece a una especie de Sitcom, en realidad el anime posee una historia que vemos desarrollarse lentamente con el paso de sus episodios. Vemos también cierto desarrollo en la relación de nuestras protagonistas, así como también conocemos un poco sobre el pasado de una de ellas. Otra cosa a destacar es la cantidad de sátiras y referencias que tiene este anime con la cultura popular y ciertas costumbres o hábitos que existen en la vida real.

Topics such as digital identity, social media use, security, friendships, judging by appearances, and your goals in life are just some of the different things we'll see in this anime. It doesn't have a great story or character development, far from it, but if you're looking for something fun to watch regardless of the fanservice and dark humor, then this is the perfect choice for you. Personally, I don't recommend it as such, since I find several aspects of its story and characters quite absurd for my taste. Although I won't deny that it's visually appealing, in addition to having a very entertaining Opening and Ending.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof. It was produced by the SHAFT studio, which has had a great career spanning several decades in this industry. It is well known for adapting famous works in the fantasy genre such as Monogatari Series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. In this case, the studio managed to capture the art and visual style of this work very well, mixing "Kawai" with dark humor. The character designs, the vivid and varied color palette, the shots, and the visual and movement styles are excellent. The same goes for the sound effects and soundtrack. In short, here's a different, funny, and interesting anime for you to watch.

Personally, I give it a rating of 7.5/10 in terms of comedy, action, and slice of life.

Temas como la identidad digital, el uso de las redes sociales, la seguridad, las amistades, el juzgar por las apariencias y los objetivos que tienes en tu vida son solo algunas de las diferentes cosas que veremos en este anime. No tendrá una gran historia o grandes desarrollos de personajes ni mucho menos, pero si lo que buscas es algo divertido de ver sin importar el fanservice y el humor negro, entonces esta es una opción perfecta para tí. Yo en lo personal no lo recomiendo como tal ya que varias cosas de su historia y personajes lo veo bastante absurdas para mí gusto. Aunque no voy a negar que visualmente es atractivo, además de tener un Opening y Ending muy entretenidos.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del aspecto audiovisual de A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof. Este fue producido por el estudio SHAFT, el cual tiene una gran carrera de varias décadas en esta industria. Es muy conocida por adaptar obras famosas del género de fantasía como Monogatari Series o Puella Magi Madoka Magica. En este caso, el estudio logró capturar muy bien el arte y estilo visual de esta obra mezclando lo “Kawai” con el humor negro. Los diseños de personajes, la paleta de colores vivos y variados, los planos y estilos visuales y de movimiento son excelentes. Lo mismo sucede con sus efectos de sonido y su banda sonora. En fin, aquí les dejo un anime diferente, cómico e interesante para ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia, la acción y el Slice of Life.
