Betel leaf is the leaf part of the betel vine. Its shape resembles a heart. In general, the chromosomes in betel leaves are diploid with an average formula of 2n = 64. The main components of betel leaves are essential oils, sesquiterpenes, diastase, tannins, sugars, and starch. Betel leaves have been used as a traditional medicine since ancient times. Types of diseases that can be treated using betel leaves include dental and oral diseases, heart disease, skin diseases, and digestive disorders. Betel leaves are also used as an insect repellent and as an ingredient in the betel chewing tradition in Indonesia.
