Kiss Week #163: There is nothing that beautifies the interior of the home like books.

There is nothing that beautifies the interior of the home like books.

I must begin by saying that I come from a family poor in material resources, but millionaires in love and words. Although we never lacked food or a roof over our heads, we grew up with the habit of inheriting our older brothers' clothes and shoes, we never had fancy toys and even in the first part of our childhood, we never had a television. However, contrary to what you might think, we were never sad or bored children, because my grandmother and her son, my father, were luxurious “storytellers”: they loved to tell us stories to amuse us.

My grandmother was illiterate and the only way she knew how to transmit stories was through orality; that is why, when I began to read, I taught my grandmother that those paper objects, called books, also kept stories. The only detail: at home we were so poor that we didn't have books. At that time, having books was a matter of status and only those who could, had books. So when I was able to buy books, I felt the little Nancy jump for joy.

Nowadays I have my personal library, where I treasure many books, I don't know how many. Many were bought, but I also have books inherited from my teachers, books that have been gifts from my students and even books, like when you find a stray dog and adopt it, that I found and without hesitation, I took them to my house.

Many people will say that nowadays having a lot of books is impractical and even old-fashioned, that that's why there are digital platforms to download and read books. But a digital book can never replace a real book. Reading a book slowly, turning the page, underlining it, writing a footnote comment is like talking to the book, listening to it, carrying a friend in your backpack.

If I think about it, books have taught me little or a lot, but they have always enriched me. My pleasure is not to accumulate, my pleasure lies in obtaining in books, the freedom that knowledge gives you. If before, having a library was synonymous with power, it was not only because books were expensive, but also because knowing, knowing, reading, develops a power in you like the one who has grown wings.

Literature is elaborated with words, those that my grandmother knew only orally. Books are a form of evolution: they serve to keep all the ancestral stories. The fact that I have books in my house says that although there were no books in my family home, they did sow in me the seed of knowledge.

I am not attached to my books: to whoever needs them, I lend them or give them as a gift. And I think, the day will come when my entire library can be a gift to someone and even if that person doesn't have gold or diamonds, he will feel like a millionaire, just as I feel with my books at this moment.

As we always say: we wish we had time to read as much as we wanted to. Hugs

Your tribute to the power of stories and books is superb and amazingly inspiring especially how you journeyed from listening to oral storytelling to building your own library where you can read and get as much information as you want.

I think that's part of the evolution: from listening to reading, from imagining to reconstructing. Thank you very much for your comment

Hello, you are absolutely right. Books are our best friends.

I say they don't complain and give us everything they have inside. 🙂

Greetings! What lovely memories of your grandmother and your family in general.

I just love your books and could get lost for days. It would probably help me relearn a lot of Spanish too!
Talking of languages, do you have any books that are not in Spanish? I used to have foreign language books to challenge myself. I remember as a child having one in Swahili!
A softback book hug for today Nancy :)
