Ladies of Hive Community Contest #275 - From Stress to Success

@LadiesofHive Community Contest #275 questions for the week are:

1️⃣ When have you had to learn a new skill under intense pressure?
~ 𝐀𝐍𝐃 / 𝐎𝐑 ~
2️⃣ When have you completely misjudged someone upon first meeting them and later discovered that they were much better or much worse than you originally thought?

This is something that happened long time ago, almost 20 years back, while I was working in a corporate job. At that time I had a job in shifts. It was all odd working hours, changing every day, including doing night shifts, which I hated a lot. I was finding it very stressful to work in night shifts and was so desperate to get out of it. I was constantly looking for change either within the organization or a new job and nothing was happening.

At that time, an opening in another department came up, and that department was into web-designing. I absolutely had no knowledge about web-designing. I was so desperate to move, that I applied. The applications would take around a month to get processed. I had decided that in this one month I will attend some classes and learn web-designing, even if it was basic. I wanted to have some knowledge of it before going for the interview. I joined classes and started learning. I absolutely had no IT background and in the beginning it all sounded greek and latin to me. After 1 week, I started understanding a little of it, and within one month I could get a basic understanding and confidence to work on it. It was very stressful and I was feeling loads of pressure, because in that one month not only had I got to learn the skills but I had to manage the job, home and everything.

The interview happened, I was able to clear it. To my luck the department was also not looking for experts, because they already had a programmed software to work on and it was about the need of having basic understanding to use the software. With this I finally got rid of working in shifts and my work routine was set to normal working hours. It was a big relief for me after 8 years of working in odd hours. If not for this I would have never learned web-designing. In a way I was happy that I could learn a new skill.

On the second question; this incident happened during one of my flight travel. I was travelling from Trivandrum to Mumbai, both are in India. I was returning back after completing a job assignment in Trivandrum. Something had gone wrong on this day and I was very upset. On the flight there was a lady next to me, and she was trying to strike a conversation with me. Her appearance was very shabby and I was as it is not having a good day. I did not want to indulge in conversation with her. Also in that time I was snobbish and had a good position in my job. In my pride I was thinking very low of her and not worthy of talking.

She seemed to be having a very chirpy nature and she kept asking something or the other to me. In one of the questions she asked me, what I was doing, and I did reply to her, telling her a little about my job. Then she told me, she was the Secretary to the Governor of Reserve Bank of India. Now, this is a very big position, in that moment I was stunned and did not know how to respond back to her. All my ego and pride shattered in a split second. I was thinking so low of her because of her appearance and dressing, but the fact was I was the one who was low in comparison to her status that she hold. Not only was she in a commanding position in her job but also so humble.

Later she told me, she saw me very upset and only wanted to cheer me up by having conversation to drift my mind from whatever thoughts I had. She also handed me her visiting card and told me if I ever visited Delhi, where her office base was, I can call her up and we could catch up for a coffee. In this moment I did feel ashamed of myself for being arrogant and proud.

Thank you for visiting my blog. 👼🏻👼🏻💖💖🌹🌺🌸

Being able to work under pressure, as you describe, and learning web design skills in just one month, is invaluable. The experience you share is also very valuable; sometimes anger can lead to pride, but recognizing arrogance helps us connect with humble people. Have a wonderful day, my friend.

Being self taught in Macro Economics, I doubt if I would ever get the chance of running into either the Governor or Secretary of the Bank of Canada. I would have more than a few questions to ask them both. Mostly on their opinions on Fiscal policy sprinkled topics of Monetary policy. It would be an adventure to me as long as I don't get suddenly arrested or thrown out of the building by force.

Haha, I am sure she would have frowned with someone like you next to her asking her work related questions.
