Having post retirement goals
By the time we reach to an age of 50, it feels like enough of working and need to take retirement from whatever job we are doing. Not everyone thinks this way, there are people who also believe that one must continue working as much as possible. What I believe is one must work very hard till the age of 45-50 and make the most financially. After crossing the threshold of 50 then one can go slow and easy. If the existing job is very hectic then that can be quit and something which is easy going can be taken up. Again this is my thought. I know if everyone thinks like me then we may not have seasoned players in any field. Because by this age one is full of rich experiences.
I never enjoyed working in a full time job, it always felt like a burden. Waking up same time every day, doing the same things like a machine and then all those timelines and deliverables, it all felt so stressful. So from my late 30s only, I was planning that I am not going to work till my retirement age and by 50 I will quit and do things that I enjoy doing. Well I have crossed 50 now, and somewhere I have been able to fulfill my desire. I have not stopped working completely but I have got into part time jobs which also allows me to do other things of life which I enjoy. But one thing I realized that retiring early is also not that easy. It is not always about the money but also what will you do with your time. In the first one year I was completely lost, I did not know what to do with my time. I had things to do but they would not occupy my full day time.
I always advice for those who are thinking of early retirement is to have a plan of what they would want to do after retirement. Just retiring from the job and taking a back seat at home is not a very wise thing. One must be very clear of their life goals after retirement, else it can become self destructive. There are so many people I know who have felt lost after their retirement because they have never thought about what they would do after it. They feel they can relax and go easy one life, but think of it, how much can one relax, a year may feel good, but after that it becomes a boredom to not be doing anything, so post retirement goal is also important to be set. People also start developing sickness after retirement because suddenly their body and mind both becomes inactive.
We humans have all tuned into a certain way of life which is kind of mechanical and when we fall out of it, sometimes we get lost, we do not know how to handle that fall out.

That part about your first year after stepping back really hit me. I used to think money planning was the only thing, but the empty calendar can be louder than alarms. Funny how free time needs structure or it starts bossing you around. What small routine or habit helped you find your rhythm again?
Some time with all the money also boredom can set in if there is nothing of value that we are doing. That's where we hear of so many stories of very rich people struggling with loneliness.
I think retiring indefinitely from work is usually what comes to mind when we think of retirement but it's not always realistic in practice. Because there are some good aspects of working apart from the burden and mechanical aspect of it that we've been so used to. I think the type of work we do just changes and we can have more room to try out different activities that we may find interesting. I'd probably spend most of my time on spiritual work if I had the ability to retire now, so much interesting work in that domain :)
Absolutely, we need something of value to get going and keeping us busy in a manner that is healthy for the brain.
This is a deep and thought provoking post, before now, my only thought for retirement is saving up a lot of money and relaxing, I haven't thought of what to do when I retire early
Ahhaaaa, my dear, when you reach that stage you will know that relaxing is not at all fun in comparison to working.
