Employees being Locked - Crazy things happening

A couple of days back this crazy situation occurred at one of the Education Technology companies in one of the cities of India. The security guard locked all the employees in the premises and not allowing them to leave the premises. He was instructed to do this by one of the Supervisor. There was a lot of noise and chaos around this incident on all social media platforms. The management later released a statement saying it was an unfortunate incident and have taken action on the same.

This incident was captured on video and was circulated on various forums like LinkedIn and Facebook and hence it got so much attention and there was action taken against the company and the person. If this video had to not go viral probably there would have been no action taken and the management would have not given an apology or taken any action. This incident came to light and hence there was noise, but the truth is that on day-to-day basis there are many companies who exploit their employees in all possible ways that they can.

The fact is that most of these small-time companies do exploit their staff to the maximum. They are made to work at lower salaries and long working hours. The problem is that there are lesser jobs and more people and hence people get ready to work for any company. 2 years back I had one part time HR consulting project with one of the Indian companies based in Dubai. The company exploited their employees all the time, they were given strict instructions that till the time the project deadlines are not met they have to work extended hours, and these people would end up working 14 to 16 hours. Some of them slept in office itself. Office had made some resting arrangements. It was not right. Couple of times I raised concerns about this working condition but they gave a deaf ear. They would keep telling me it's a temporary situation, but that temporary situation would never end. I would get regular grievances about over working, less salary and unethical work conditions. I tried from my side but then I just did not feel right to work with them and quit. I could quit but majority of the people cannot do that because they needed the job and the money.

Not only small and mid-level companies but majority of the big companies also lack professionalism and work ethics, the only difference is that the big companies do compensate in some ways whereas the small companies never do that also. They feel they are not hiring employees but they are hiring slaves. Being for 20 years in HR with different companies I do understand how the management thinks at so many levels. Some exploit sophisticatedly and some ruthlessly. In the last decade some of the big companies have come up with the work life balance concepts. Thankfully those are the breathers and allow one to work with respect and integrity.

Every member of an organisation is a vital pillar that keeps the organisation strong. No member of an organisation deserves to be treated as a slave.

So true, if you do not respect the people who work for you, the quality of work is going to suffer and that will directly impact the company's brand image

It's great that the incident was recorded and posted on social media. These companies think they have far too leverage over their employees that's why they try to exploit them in so many ways. They're humans like everyone else and have a life outside of work.

Thanx to the Social Media power, things like these get exposed. There is too much exploitation in smaller places. Not that the larger ones don't but still there is some pay back in return.

Keeping this organizations accountability is usually the hard part. They always get away with it. Looking forward to when technology will give the employees more opportunities for them to work for themselves rather than for these organizations :)

I believe is not right to force people to work in these conditions in a temporary situation. At least you have the luxury to move to a better situation.

That's right, not everyone is in position to make these choices. It is so important that companies treat their people with respect and work with some ethics

@nainaztengra I empathize with your thoughts on this issue. It is a difficult problem that many business owners and their employees face. Most companies want to fully utilize their employees' capabilities for the amount of money they pay them. While some businesses will have overtime pay or incentives for their employees, there are also companies that consider employees working overtime and doing more work than the regulation to be a matter of course, and that is their responsibility.

That's a fact that many small time companies do not value their employees and pay them appropriately for their efforts. There is lot of exploitation that happens in these smaller firms

That is extreme gosh! just because I am pursing money? what happens if I eveentually break down whilst pursing the money, who enjoys it?

Employees need to be cut some slacks.

Who cares.....seriously... no one. They hire very young people so that they have more capacity, and they always show them some carrots to get them going as per their ways

The person or people who recorded the incident did great! Else, the company wouldn't have been reprimanded. Companies should understand that workers are not slaves. The best companies in the world always have a large percentage of happy/satisfied workers. Eventually, people would get tired of the little payment for voluminous hours of work each day.

Money is what everyone works for but it's not the only thing that everyone works for. A work life balance is very important else sooner or later the person will quit the job. Yes, thankfully this came to notice with a lot of noise else they would have happily got away with it and may be continued doing it

At this point it's safe to say "were grateful for technology"

You cannot force anything because it lowers the morale of others. That's why the company should always run thinking about everyone, only then it can go into profit. thanks for sharing 🙏

The Company has to always think of it's employees well-being along with their own only then they can succeed
