5 minute freewrite 2881 prompt stuck in a refrigerator
This is my post for #freewriters 2881 prompt stuck in a refrigerator hosted by @mariannewest
When I was a child, we lived on an inlet at the end of a barrier island, and to get there, you had to travel a road made of sugar sand. Sugar sand is a fine white sand that is easy for your vehicle to get stuck in. The only way to get there by car or truck was to let some of the air out of your tires, this kept you from getting stuck in the sand.

For us to keep things cold, Dad had to buy block ice from the ice plant and haul it the twenty miles to our house. We had the kind of refrigerator that, when shut, you had to pull down on the handle and pull hard to get it to open. When closed, it was locked. It was the type that they used to warn parents that a child could get stuck in a refrigerator and die from lack of air.
Dad did not have a refrigerator in his bar/store, he had big metal coolers. One had a lid that lifted up, and one the lid slid sideways. He put blocked ice in them. Sometimes he would have me chip the ice with an icepick, and sometimes I would puncture a can of beer.
We were to get electricity when they paved the A1A. They laid out the power poles but had not put them up. I do not know the entire story, but someone wanted a long dock, and they turned up with the poles to build it, and the poles for our electricity went missing.
Once we got electricity, we got a new refrigerator, but it had the same kind of handle and locked the same way. They told parents to take the door from them when they quit working.

Greetings,
The detail about the refrigerator handle and the very real danger it posed is both chilling and a powerful piece of social history. Did your family eventually remove the door from the old fridge?
I don't remember what Dad did with it, knowing him, he might have buried it, that is what he did with our trash.
Thank you
🙏
