5 minute freewrite 2775 prompt innovation
This is my post for #freewriters 2775 prompt innovation hosted by @mariannewest
Something is happening with the weather in my area. Every summer we used to have afternoon thunderstorms, and for the last few years, this has not happened. Sure, we will get one once in a while, but it used to be every day, just like clockwork. If you were on the river after 2 o'clock, you had better be thinking of coming in, that is when they started building. By 3, it was too late, you had better find a place to wait it out.
The only time we get a lot of rain is when we have a tropical storm or hurricane, and then we get too much rain. It is a good thing that arecas can tolerate standing in water, most plants would die.
Not only are our summers different, but our winters are, too. We do not get as cold as we used to. We did not have a lot of below freezing weather, but it did happen a few times in the winter. This has not happened for the last several years.
Not getting freezes has allowed the big plant nurseries to grow a hedge plant called Calusia. They grow fast, but they are a warm weather plant. In years past, they were not grown in central Florida because of our freezes. When the temperature gets that low, they will get a disease that can kill them. This year, the nurseries sold many of them. This hurt us because we grow areca palms for hedge plants. There was one big nursery that planted so many that they put in an ad that said they had 50 thousand Calusias that they were selling for 5 dollars each. That is innovation.
Because the calusias are doing well now, we did not plant any new arecas this year. I am thinking of growing different plants like we used to grow when we had plant sales, but this time, instead of having to take them to different locations to sell, I will try to post them on Marketplace and see if people will come to me. We have never done this because the neighbors might complain. We are allowed to grow plants here if we start them from seed or cuttings, but not if we buy from a nursery. We are not allowed to sell from home, even though we have a nursery license. I am thinking of a new innovation to get around this. I am wondering if someone says they want a plant, can I meet them somewhere close with it, maybe even at the end of our driveway?
