Health in any relationship should be given much priority since it could become a very detrimental issue that affects relationships if not addressed from the beginning. Here's a story of how this issue can play out:

‘Emily and Ryan have been dating for 3 years and they were very much in love’. They had discussed the future plans, goals and dreams and one of the main topics was starting a family. Unfortunately, one day, while having a normal check-up, Emily was diagnosed with a genetic disease which can be inherited to the children.

Ryan being the committed man he was encouraged them to go for a test to check if he also had the gene. Sadly, the outcome was a negative one as it revealed that Ryan was a carrier which significantly reduced the couple’s chances of having a healthy child.

The news was terrible, and the couple decided that there was no hope to start a family and become happy as they had imagined. They started to ponder whether they were suited for each other and if they should have checked their medical compatibility before getting married.

Therefore, in such a case, my recommendations to Emily and Ryan would be first, the two of them should step down from the problem, relax and then sit down to discuss on what course of action needs to be taken. They should also seek advice from a counselor to discuss on the prospects of genetic testing, fertility and other issues.

Regarding the question of when Medical compatibility should be checked, I would suggest lovers to do it immediately at any sign of a new serious relationship or before the creation of a new family. This can include:

  1. Genetic testing: Identify any of the inherited genetic disorders that may exist in families of the different families you may be associated with.

  2. Medical history: Discuss any past or present diseases, illnesses, or conditions, as well as any allergies or surgical operations you might have had or any that are in the family.

  3. Fertility testing: The same doctor may advise that you get tested for fertility, especially if you are anticipating for a child.

  4. Blood type and Rh factor: Do self-check on the blood type and the Rh factor when checking compatibility.

  5. STI testing: The position to take thus is to go get checked for the STIs to ensure that the couple has a safe and healthy sexual relationship.

Point to know is that medical compatibility is but one factor among the many that define a relationship and people should not forget to always listen, trust, and care for each other. It is also crucial for lovers to identify this flaw at an early stage so that they can work on it and make better decisions for their future.
