The use of artificial intelligence also is a current ‘ingredient’ that has been widely discussed in the recent years. As we will see while discussing the topic of reinforcement learning, AI has evolved from a science fiction concept to an everyday tool that people use to foster their job and personal growth, yet because of the rapid progress in AI, there are concerns of AI taking over humans in the workplace and in society as a whole.

Despite this idea of artificial general intelligence, or machines that can do everything better than humans, AI is already in the process of slowly becoming a more common part of society. Today, with voice assistants abounding in forms from Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa to self-driving automobiles and automated customer service chatbots, it is apparent that AI has a role in our society.

As mentioned earlier, one of the most promising fields that are being systematically developed in the application of AI is the field of automation. These challenges are becoming sharper due to the growing levels of technological developments that are today leading to more and more job losses due to automation by AI. While specific predictions differ, some scholars estimate that up to 40% of all occupations may be automated by AI within the next fifteen years, resulting in high rates of joblessness and societal transformation.

Besides, automation, AI is expanding its presence in other fields such as healthcare, finance, security among others. AI is making diagnosis with an analysis of medical data for doctors, while in trading, platforms utilizing AI technology are making decision in a matter of milliseconds which takes human beings a lot of time. AI is also being used to identify other patterns within data set that might be useful in protecting against hacker attacks and other threats of similar nature.

However, looking at all this progress realized, it is not difficult to understand why some enthusiasts of artificial intelligence are predicting that AI may take over many aspects of human life. But however, there are as well several grounds regarding which one must approach these predictions very skeptically. This works well because AI is extremely strong, but is not perfect and can only ever be as good as the technology, and the information put into it.

Another major problem with AI at present is that its data is generally biased. Essentially, AI algorithms are inherently fair because they customize their results based on the input data; however, if the data is tainted in any way, then so will be the algorithms’ results. This can have a major impact on decisions in sensitive fields such as health or crime, in which AI can increase inequalities and injustices.

Ethics is still another question that has remained an open issue concerning AI. With the advancement of technology in the development of an advanced AI, there arise some questions on the ethical aspect of the advancement.

A sample question that could be created now is Are decisions pertaining to life and death something that should be left in the hands of AI?Are artificial intelligence systems liable for their actions? They are questions that society will have to answer as with any new development in the technology of artificial intelligence.

Finally, it may be quite misleading to ask whether AI will replace humans anytime soon. That said, a number of challenges and limitations still remain and some barriers exist that hinder the ability of AI to fully overtake human intelligence and bring about positive change to society.

For now, society needs to be aware of the advancement in the AI technology as well as work to ensure that it is being implemented properly namely, ethically. This brief examination of the current state of AI and its future potential shows that the next steps are up to us – but by pushing past the current limitations, the power of this technology can transform our world for the better.
