A Painful Lesson Learned: The Worst Careless Decision as a Cyclist
Hello cyclers, trust y’all had a great week.
Welcome to my blog !
P.S : These photos were taken the day after, since on that exact day of the incident I wasn't with my mobile phone to snap every process. So while passing by the next day, I took a sharp picture of my repair centre)
In these times, owning a bicycle has been one of the greatest gift in my life. I’ve really enjoyed cycling since i got a bicycle. I’ve still been getting lessons on how to ride perfectly without sustaining injuries; i can’t just wait for that day to come. But something annoying and disheartening happened during the weekend.
A friend of mine who cycles came to my house and requested to use my cycle for a biking competition. He said his own had a major issue and was undergoing repairs. I was sad and reluctant to give because i had not given out before. But finally i was encouraged to give him because he was a pro but i told him that i would love him to bring back my cycle in good shape and he agreed.
Later on in the evening , i was waiting for him to bring back the bicycle for my lessons but funny enough, i waited for a long time and i didn’t see him. Out of anger my teacher left and went back home. He was furious and was asked why i choose to give out my bicycle to someone i wasn’t sure of. I was worried and decided to go to his house to check if he was back.
On reaching there, i saw my bicycle in a different state outside his house, all of a sudden my mood changed, my bicycle was unrecognisable. Immediately he heard me shouting, he came out from the house with a pity-looking face trying to explain what happened but out of anger, i regretted giving him my bicycle.
Immediately, i zoomed out heading to my friend’s repair workshop looking so angry. It was close there.
On reaching there, i entered inside, The walls of the building were occupied by the landscapes of the neatly arranged tools and spare parts; one of the mechanics was already busy adjusting a bicycle with swift and confident movements of hands.
I took my bike to the guy that was less busy and showed him explaining my predicament to the other customer that came to repair his bike too. The repairer now ordered one of his apprentice to take it to the repairing bay after he looked through it. When he has doing the repairs, I just sat in a corner and watched the man how he was just doing the whole thing.
I started thinking hard and felt bad for releasing my bike to such a careless fellow because My bike was not merely a means of getting from point ‘A’ to point ‘B,’ but a friend, a confidant, a partner, a friend, a joy, and my freedom.
I did not take long before I realized that the mechanic had come outside with my bike all shining like new. He also added that he had worked on the brakes by changing them, the gears through applying some chemicals on them, the tires by patching them and he informed me that my bike was in its best state as it could be. I told him many times thanks which he surely deserved a lot with all the efforts he spent and the knowledge he has in the area.
After taking my bike back from the repair centre, I felt this special joy and happiness inside of me and i was smiling all through as i took it home. I couldn’t wait to be back on the road on my newly fixed bicycle.
I learnt a big lesson, but out of regrets though. I just didn’t want to reach out to him again as far as my bike was in a good condition.
Remember, fellow cyclists, our bikes are more than just machines; they're part of our lives. Let's cherish and protect them.
