Yam Harvest, the importance and benefits of prompt harvest

Hello Hive

A happy start of the week to us all, I hope that January has been nice so far. It has been quiet and calm here against the noise from other parts of the country. I feel so much better today after some long hours of quality rest. The migraines have stated to bother me these two days and I feel like it's about time for some proper medical checkup.

It's always a good thing to check on our health especially after a long farming season and stress situations. Keeping out health in check will prolong the quality of life and our productivity.

Aside these yesterday we got some share of yams from our farm neighbors who were able to harvest they yams over the weekend.

One of the reasons why my family decided not to plant yams in this season is because of the incessant invasion of our farms by thieves who will not allow us to enjoy the tubers we grow. The theft is so much that most times they will come with their trucks to harvest the crops they have not planted and go and sell them. Tuber crops like yams and potatoes are one of the crops that these thieves invade the most. Hence we put a stop to planting yams.

Our other farm neighbors decided to give it a try and after harvest he has come to share some proceeds with us. We are grateful to receive some tubers of yams for food for free.

I noticed that some of the yams are already becoming diseased and invaded by termites. The yams that ought to have been harvested right from the months of October were left in the farms till now. Most people do not like to harvest their yams on time so that they won't end up eating it up before the year runs out

But the disadvantage of late harvest is that the yams can get invaded by insects who bore holes into the crops like this making the yams to get rotten. It's another season for yam cultivation of ridges for planting of yams, the previous year plantings have to be harvested before another set can be planted, this is the reason the harvest of the remaining tubers of the yams have to be done now.

As the yams are being harvested, another set of ridges are being cultivated for a next session planting of yams. The same type of crops will be planted on this soil for at least 3years before it gets replaces by a legume or other crops.

It is important to harvest yams early and seek for a proper method of storage instead of suffer the loses of getting the tubers all rotten and not fit for consumption
