Where it is all Heading, My Farming and gardening Journey, how hard work paid off for myself and family
Hello Hive
Farming Journey
Been a hardworking farmer I find it very difficult to buy foodstuff from the market since I know the value and quality of foodstuffs I get from my farm, besides in harsh times when food inflation is biting deep, I often have food in my barns for myself and my family .
We have rice, corn and some millet currently that are under storage, we do not have beans this year because the hausa-fulani cows invaded our farms and ate up the 2acres of planted beans. While planting crops we made sure to plant both carbohydrates and protein to have a balance of the meals just like it is been taught that balance diet is good for our health.
We equally plant tubers but haven't studied the best ways to preserve our potatoes hence tubers are the first harvest we often consume so that they don't get rotten due to the excess fluid contents they contain.
We plant and start harvest from Yams, potatoes, then to cereals like maize, followed by groundnuts, rice and millet and beans together if beans is available.
These are all foods for consumption by my family since our farming 🧺 is a subsistent one for food production alone and not commercial farming. Nevertheless when the need for some emergency funds appears we often sell off a portion of this crops to pay for school fees and house rent.
Gardening Journey
I started off a gardening journey in December last year to be able to meet with our vegetable and likely fruit needs. Having started it in the dry seasons the land here is really because it is a space in rented compound within the city where I have rented a house to live in. The garden was frustrated in many ways. From inability to get good seeds to shortage of water for wetting the garden.
Gradually the garden is going into extinction and cannot provide for my vegetable needs. I barely have enough water to use for myself in the house and have used recycle water from other domestic activities in the house to wet the garden.
Have Harvested vegetables a couple of times which was satisfying.
Having a garden in the wet seasons when there is rain will most likely be very easier and maybe the best decision now is to hold on till then but I don't want to give up on the Jute mallow and vegetables just yet.
Maybe I could check around to see if there is a place for buying commercial water here because most cities in Nigeria are into treated commercial water sale for their communities to have quality water.
Even If I can be purchasing a bucket at some good price we can hold into this little garden until the rains come before a further expansion.
This farming and Garding Journey is one that delights me as it keeps hunger at bay while we seek to pursue our career and do other task of life .
