How to plant/ propagate the Fluted pumpkins, Health benefits of fluted pumpkin.
Hello Hive
Fluted pumpkin are one of the very rich vegetables we can find in the vegetables family, even though not everyone knows how to grow this veggy. Fluted pumpkin is rich in iron and potassium that makes it a very good blood enrichment vegetable. Even our uneducated parents understand the roles that pumpkin plays when it comes to blood enrichment. Growing up as a child we had a constant year round supply of fluted pumpkins from our garden. My mum made it a part of our everyday meal such that the severity of anaemia I had often experience from managing a health condition was brought down to the minimum.
The leaves can be added to any meals and like my mum , every stew, soup and porridge had enough portions of the vegetable. I have learnt how to grow fluted pumpkins from my mum and wish to propagate some of it today.
Having stated a garden of my own earlier this summer, the extremely hot and harsh weather permitting accompanied with shortage of water supply for gardening didn't allow the planted vegetables to survive.
Jute mallow and spinach were the veggies planted on an average 2 by 4 meter land space.
Fluted pumpkin will not be needing such amount of spacing for it's initial growth stage and I want to start the growth in a sack at first.
The plant might take at least two months before it starts to expand and spread properly hence making it easy to start the initial growth phase in a sack and even with limited amount of water.
Planting in sack is like the nursery stage for the veggies and you can chose to do this in a cup or some other materials .
To propagate this
You get a sack for this purpose, one that is probably not too long
Fill it up with some fertile loamy-clay soil, you can chose to water the soil for some two days to allow the temperature of the soil to become normalize and wet enough.
- Pick up eat fluted pumpkin seeds and plant it with the tips facing upwards. The seeds often have a pointed tip which when planting this is made to face upwards.
Having placed some soil to cover the seeds we allow this to germinate while counting the number of days it will take for that to be done
Transplanting from nursery stage will be done later if the pumpkin show great potentials for expansion.
There are two ways we often plant our pumpkins
- The first method are the pumpkins planted in ridges in the farm, the grow to cover the ground like cover crops
- The second one is the overhead methods where we create bridges and the pumpkins grow along the bridges above the ground level into something like a shade.
Pumpkin can be planted for commercial purpose and one of the profitable business ventures I have done in the past. One of the expensive vegetables you see in the market as well.
