Basic requirements for growing Yams.
Hello Hive
Yams as one of my favorite foods though takes so much time to grow before maturity and even before we can then have it as food. It takes about 8 months for planted seedlings to get to maturity. Meaning that after planting yams we have to wait for that long before we can harvest them for food, it's a bit frustrating for me knowing just how long I have to wait yearly to eat yams. Although we have some species now that gets matured up in the 7th month, that is still such a long time for
Although we have yams in the market all year round but we mostly eat some kind of food such as this only when it is in season. And for years we have eating only the yams grown in our farm.
Every year daddy made sure that we grow some yams in our family farms. Whenever the year is coming to an end towards the months of November he begins to cultivate the yam ridges.
Yams are planted in ridges much taller above the ground than the normal kind of ridges used for growing other types of crops. This is very important as the reason for this is not far fetch, yams are tubers and deep root growers, they need this kind of ridges shapes that creates room for them to grow into the soil
Proper care for yams
This starts with mulching. Right after planting of seeds. The land is firstly cultivated in the month of November or as early as October depending on weather and the farmers choice. After which yam seedlings are then planted.
Mulching is the covering of the yams seedlings to regulate the soil temperate and protect them from the heat throughout the dry season of the year. From there yams seedlings can germinate when the rain comes and we can continue taking care of it from there. Yams are one of the easiest crops to grow buy the waiting time for it to germinate is what gives me concern. I wish that the lifecycle and maturing time of yams can be altered too 😂.
And that type of yam, we don't eat it or lete say, we are not fond of it. We call it Igbo yam😂
Tor...that's a new one I'm just hearing.
Yeah, it's funny and strange😂
