Keeping Promises

Promise is giving a word of affirmation to someone and it's a commitment that we can put ourselves into knowingly or unknowingly. Some people are so carefree, they make promises anyhow just to please someone else or save themselves from certain situations.

I'm someone who is always careful with the words I alter to someone because I've learnt that words are powerful and most times people use our alterations to judge us.

So, I don't want to be tagged a liar that's why I frequently use the word "probably" before promising anyone anything nowadays. But that doesn't mean I haven't broken my promises before after all i'm a human being and I'm not perfect so I've broken my promises a couple of times.

Have you ever broken a promise you made to someone?
Yes, I've broken my promises countless times and most times it's all about paying someone a visit or helping someone to do something and I forgot.

Before my relocation from Kwara to Oyo State Nigeria, I worked in the village so most times I'm eager to go back to my city lifestyle and have fun with my friends. Fulfilling the promise I told some of my friends will now be a problem once I'm back with my family during the terminal holiday.

The urge to go out and have fun with my friends would totally go down. All that will be in my mind during those moments is just to stay indoors and work on my sewing machine then gist with my family. Hardly will I fulfill my visitations promises and this makes me feel bad.

My reasons for not holding my promises might not be justifiable to the person whom I made a promise to, but to me it's justifiable because what I was doing at that particular moment was worthy of my time and I can't abandon it.

But recently, I've learnt to use the word "probably" so that once the person didn't see me he or she won't hold on to my words. And I feel it's working, because it has been saving me from grudges.

Have people broken their promises to me?
Yes! Like I've said earlier, we are an imperfect being so promises can be broken. I vividly remember while I was working at the village, seeking for transfer at every corner. I met a woman who promised me heaven on earth, she was so sure of herself that I won't use up to a session at the village before she would help me with my transfer back to the capital.

Lo and behold her promises failed and I almost used 4 years at the location before getting another job. I felt back about it but life goes on!

Can there ever be a valid reason to break a promise?
Yes, I believe the circumstances of life which is beyond our power can sometimes lead to breaking of promise. And once it happens, we don't have control over it.

But in all, it's good to keep to ones promise but once you envisaged that you might have tight schedule and you won't be able to fulfill your words, it's good to use the word "probably" to save you from any chaos!

It is important to always check if we have the capacity to fulfill the promises we make before making the cause some time people make promises out of sympathy and emotions and later find out they can't keep their words

A promise is a sacred thing; if you make one, you should keep it. The person you made the promise to will naturally assume you'll follow through. That's why it hurts so much when someone makes a promise and then breaks it😔.
