A King of Fools (14th April)

Emeka was the king of fools. He thought he could eat his cake and have it back. But life and reality proved to him that he couldn't. As he walked down the street littered with empty sachets and newspapers, he wondered what his just-divorced wife was thinking as she drove home that afternoon from the court. It had seemed like a dream to Emeka, he never felt he would be a divorced man or an ex-husband.
But it had started about six months ago when Clara, the new financial secretary, had started working at his workplace. They had gotten close within a short time and she seemed to understand him in ways Mary his wife couldn't, and __ a car sped past and splashed muddied water on him, sending dirty sachets and newspapers flying. Emeka stopped in his tracks, glaring angrily at the speeding car.
“Go and die at home!” The driver yelled through the window and spat on the floor. Emeka felt like the ground should open up and swallow him. As if marriage wasn't done humiliating him, life was doing the same. He looked down at his clothes, his white shirt and grey trousers were stained with dirty water. Just then he heard the cloud rumble and looked up, it had gotten cloudy without his notice. He pulled himself together and began to run with the big brown envelope he held in his hand. It contained the documents to the remaining properties the court had decided to leave to him after giving a greater part to his wife. But it wasn't long before the rain began to pour and it didn't stop until Emeka got home drenched in water and his envelope almost completely torn.
