Swainson's Hawk in Flight

Soaring high in the sky, I saw this Swainson's hawk. It can be identified by its pointy wings, and it is also one of the more widely seen birds of prey in my area. It is very skilled at soaring and coasting, staying up in the sky longer than I am able to keep track of it. Watching it coast along is something that immediately takes me away to someplace calm, with no other thoughts but watching this bird and trying to imagine what it's like to be up so high.

That long, effortless glide you described sounds like it found a perfect thermal and just rode it forever. I love how a bird like that can erase the noise in your head in seconds, and then your neck reminds you you’re still on the ground. Do you notice them most around midday when the air is rising, or do they cruise in the evenings where you are?

A few days ago, when I went to the beach, I spent a long time lying by the sea, in the shade. Many gulls flew overhead, and I had those very same thoughts.

This Swainson's hawk is native to North America, I just checked it on eBird. 😃
