OUR ADVENTURES IN THE WALD: FOOD/ROOT CROPS/FRUITS/NEIGHBORS

image.png

We and Family went to our Wald where we do some harvesting root crops, relaxing, eating food with our neighbour and relatives. We have no house there but we have little called ‘LANDAHAN’ which means a hut for smoke-drying copra were we sometimes sleeps when we have no time to goes home and when it’s dark. We harvested the coconut fruit every 3 months and sell it per kilo. This is how we live in the province, sometimes we make a buko salad specially if it’s very hot season. Sell some root crops in the market.
Yeah, everyone loves to take a chill time, with a nice season. But, the thing is, the temperature is so very hot and since I’m here in the area which there’s a lot of trees, it’s a kind of cool, fresh air.

I fry fish, the fish has a lot of tiny bones so be careful to eat, it takes me 1 hour to eat as we eat while chatting. It’s me and my mother. We didn’t yet prepare the sauce for it so I go I catch some fruit called ‘IBA’ It’s sour, lots of fruits that time. I squeezed and put some salt for the sauce. So, there came our neighbor and we gave and share it with him. Our neighbor lives there for about 85 years, so he knows what the magical things happens in the Wald area. All I like when I’m in the place where I born, people here are so kind, helping each other. People are close to each other as unlike the City I live, people don’t even care, fake, gossips and laughs annoys me and I am an introvert so I don’t feel to be in their circle, prefer to a genuine few friends.

So, I did plant these peanuts, only the peanuts. I am very happy when start’s growing, I always clean it making sure no weeds around. I waited 4 months to get it harvested. We also take sweet potatoes, the orange, violate and white. It’s like a camping, we have a hammock, some snacks and also the peanut.

We and my mother plant trees, it can bear fruits, it’s a lanzones, Indian mango, carabao mango and buying more grafted seedlings for the future. When I was young, we live here in the Wald, and when I had my first grade, we changed our location, we moved. Our land area didn’t have any fruit trees, we just left it, just came back when its time to harvest the coconut. My life way before is nice. Yeah, adulting is tough.

So now, we were planting root crops, banana, papaya, dwarf coconut, mangos, and many more. There is an old tree near our in our house before, my mother was planning to cut it to make it a coal and I said no, the mango tree is surviving itself there, it’s already there when I was a child, it’s my memories for my childhood when we are complete, we are really happy. Years goes by, everything makes me lonely, everything’s changed. It really hurts me when my mother says that she wants to cut the mango old tree. I feel ache in my hurt, I said no. I guess I convince my mother not to cut it, I don’t know, when the time comes, when I will away, maybe they will cut it. I just hope not.

My family, relative the visitor here was eating together. These are the foods we mostly eat here.
We enjoy a lot, too many chit chats.

This our source of water, we bath, wash dishes, drink. This is not the one, I didn’t take picture where we fetch water. It’s refreshing, cool and cold.

Lastly, we are going home. We didn’t stay here since its so quiet, dark is scary, lots of noises are getting out.
I don’t why my mother in that way through her head. I guess to carry all, me, I just carry on hand. It’s heavy. We also take home the harvested sweet potato, peanuts and papaya. Since we have no vehicle on us, yeah I have a vehicle, it needs to fix on the shop. I will do that next week.
We are on the waiting shed. Waiting for a called ‘bao-bao maybe called tok-tok’ to carry our heavy carried.
When we have no heavy hand carry, we walk home, it takes us maybe about 1 hour. We are enjoying walking while talking, laughing, running, be careful, vehicles are on our side. We just noticed when he sounds comes towards our way.

Note: Some pictures were edited to CANVA.

That's a wonderful adventure I wish I could experience someday @mj001. Getting all those crops and consume them must have a very good taste since they are freshly harvested. That is so interesting. The air in that place must be fresh. Enjoy your fresh crops with your family!

wow! I really love reading your story. I can relate to it. I like living in a place like this - peaceful and far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Actually, I grew up in a place like this but I spent most of my days in the city when I started working. So when I got the chance to go home, I grabbed it and now living uptown again. We also have this 'landahan' but we call it in Bicol 'agunan' where copra is being cooked. We have our coconut plantation and my father has been a coconut farmer since I was born. Happy farming! 😊
