Intelligent Leadership Develops Emotions
These days, leadership is not just about knowing strategies or having intelligence (IQ). From real-life experiences and observations, I have learned that a truly good leader is developed through Emotional Intelligence. I had not given this topic much importance before, but recently I read an article that changed my perspective a lot. That article talks about five very simple yet powerful phrases that, if used regularly in a leader’s speech, can make him more humane, credible, and effective.

We may all know these little phrases, but in reality, very few people use them. Here I share my opinion on them, and why I think they can be applied to everyone’s daily life.
- “I understand”
This phrase is very simple, but it hides the depth of empathy. If you really want to understand someone, say this to them. This shows people that you are able to think from their perspective. This does not mean that you agree with them, but rather that you respect their feelings. In our society, a lot of conflict, anger, or frustration can be resolved if someone comes up and says, “I understand your situation.”
- “Why?”
This word “why” can often raise questions, but when used correctly, it conveys curiosity and an interest in understanding. If you ask someone a question or opinion and ask, “Why did you think that?” – that’s not an argument, it’s an attempt to understand. It opens a door where people can share their thoughts or experiences. However, the tone should be gentle and interested, so that it doesn’t come across as threatening.
- “How can I help?”
This phrase is simply amazing. It not only indicates understanding the problem, but also a step towards solving it. It comes from someone who doesn’t just give orders, but is there to help. Today’s workplace needs leaders who don’t just say, “Do this,” but say, “I want to help you, how can I?” This attitude builds trust.

- “We”
The word “I” may express personal achievement, but the word “we” conveys unity. When someone says, “We can”, they mean that everyone has to walk the path together. I have seen that many team projects succeed only when leaders say “We will do it”, “We will try”, because no one feels alone. This feeling of unity becomes a great encouragement.
- “Thank you”
Such a simple word, but its impact is very deep. Recognizing someone’s work in the workplace or at any level of life is not just a courtesy, it provides a kind of psychological protection. When you tell someone, “Thank you for your efforts”, they understand that someone has noticed their hard work. And through this, the pressure in the workplace is reduced to some extent, because people can work better when they get recognition.
Final words
To be a good leader today, you do not need big speeches or tough instructions. Rather, you need that emotional awareness, where you understand the people’s minds and say the right thing. These five little sentences may seem like a very ordinary part of everyday life, but they contain a powerful message of leadership.
Personally, I think that if each of us practiced these words in our own lives—with family, with friends, with colleagues—then the world around us would become more humane. Ultimately, leadership is needed in every aspect of life, not just in the office. And that’s where these words will keep us going.
