Shy and not-so-shy flamingos

DSC_7388.JPG

They seem to be smart birds. They are united - when one has lunch, everyone else has it simultaneously.

When I arrived at this place where I promised myself a few months ago that I would return (check here in case you want to see my promise) everyone had their heads buried in the water. Is that possible? All the flamingos were so shy and busy looking for tasty morsels.

DSC_7342.JPG

Fortunately, I had time and patience, so I was able to wait for those individuals who from time to time decided not to be so shy and show themselves.

DSC_7343.JPG

Mostly, it happened every few seconds that some of the flamingos in the flock raised their heads just enough to breathe air and that's it - back into the water. It was like a game, I had to wait to see who would be next to raise their head. Other times I followed the same bird and waited for that second he would breathe.

DSC_7365.JPG

I didn't always guess in this game of picking the right flamingo. This is also confirmed by the fact that I took over a hundred or so pictures... Much more. Always the same picture: a multitude of white feathered clouds standing in the water, with pink legs and a long neck in the water.

DSC_7356.JPG

When I was at home importing pictures from the camera to the laptop and checking them I gave up on the one-hundred-and-tenth image. And there was still a lot, at that number I reached half of my today's walk around this salt lagoon in Calpe.

DSC_7442.JPG

The info board said that the walk around this lagoon takes more or less 45 minutes. It took me an hour as I went slowly and waited for the not-so-shy flamingos. However, it was quite an easy path, dirt road mostly, with some stages with wooden paths.

DSC_7438.JPG

All around the lagoon, you could spot birds and flamingos but they were close to the shore just in some parts. For example, this family of flamingos enjoyed their Sunday time in a remote corner. They were my favourites today.

Do you see the little ones too? They are grey.

DSC_7413.JPG

DSC_7410.JPG

The "parents" of those little ones made some posing exhibition for me. Well, people with professional cameras and lenses and with talent, skills and experience would make some super nice photos, not like mine. 😁

Contrasting elements - city vs nature?

DSC_7427.JPG

I made the whole circular walk around the lagoon with a smile on my face. How many times do we get the chance to see flamingos this close?

DSC_7361.JPG

Whether they were shy or not, I was happy with my walk today. :))

That's the most I've seen flamingos. Pretty sure I've never seen one in real life. Looks like they're in a witness protection program.

Very nice!

Flamingos are visiting the town we are living too and we are looking forward to see them but 18 months that we are here, we keep missing them and read about it in the news, after they are gone :)

But we are alert now, the next time we'll be ready :)

Fingers crossed that you can take some photos of the flamingos next time they are in the town. They should be more or less at the same time in Greece as here in Spain, or not?

I guess so. They are supposed to stop here at the
beginning of spring, on their way north and at the beginning of autumn, on their way south but they appear on various dates. On September 9th there were 50 of them for a few hours but we missed them. Hopefully we'll have more chances to see them for one more month!

Best regards. The flamingos are beautiful. It is a very interesting walk. What a nice place that contrasts with the city. Don't worry still photos are also nice.

Yes, the contrast is just so visible from this side of the lagoon, incredible. I hope the birds will not give their place to the buildings :D

Flamingos keep the tradition in the lagoon, but the city seems to change all around that place...

Dear friend, what a beautiful walk, a beautiful water mirror with flamingos. To recreate the view and clear the mind. You can't count the flamingos you lose sight of them, they are there like stars. Thank you for sharing such beautiful images.

Actually, I tried to count them just on one photo, and it was already enough :D
Thank you for enjoying the views ;)

The contrast of nature and city is beautiful, and your happiness even more so. Happiness among flamingos. 😄

In addition to happiness, there was a slight longing to see the flamingos finish the lunch and have their heads out of the water 😂 but they just continued searching in the water. They are quite funny, I made a video too, of how they walk with their head under the water. So, so funny

OMG, I can't laugh any more at the things I see and read this afternoon. A slight longing... hahaha... pero si te hicieron hasta una danza de apareamiento 😆

👌😄 sí.

maybe flamingos just relieve their fluffy thoughts by putting their heads under water, or they communicate like that... are you a biologist? 🤣

I am not. I am just a pianist.

But there are slight chances that they also play some kind of underwater piano with their feet so they have to look there all the time until they learn to play without looking.

I am slightly confused already.

I've never seen grey flamingos before! What a beauty! They are one of the birds my mum loves the most along with the swan. That lagoon is a marvel, patience led you to be able to take beautiful pictures! Thank you for this walk!😍

The grey ones are the babies, or maybe they are already teenagers, so now they also have a photo from that age 😆
Yes, they are so beautiful birds 😇

Flamingoes are the weirdest looking bird, but they really are a majestic bird, how evolution has brought them here is brilliant. I have never seen them in their natural habitat. Gorgeous

Yes, majestic but they are also funny. You know, they walk at the same time with their heads in the water 😁 I made a video too but forgot to prepare it and upload 🤦‍♀😂

They come to these shallow lagoons (there is another one close to Valencia, saw them already there - many, many more of them but no pictures from that occasion) as here they can find little shrimps and algae - perfect Sunday lunch :D

I'm not surprised that you wanted to return to this place since it is so beautiful.
These are the kind of birds that I would love to see in person.
I imagine seeing you waiting for the flamingos to get their heads out of the water so I can photograph them
Beautiful photographs
Have a happy start to the week, dear friend @mipiano
