Ethics
We, humans, are always in search of loopholes, to exploit something in our favor. We end up bypassing the procedure by unethical means for our gains. Might not be everyone, but most of us have this tendency in different things in different ways.
Today I got a sudden call from an unknown person. Later, I got to know this was someone I met in an online meeting. He approached me to seek help over a project that he got, he said it was a paid project and would split that if I helped him. That was a service-type project, so I don't have any problem collaborating.
The first thing that stuck in my head was that he forbade me to share about this with someone that we both know. I thought this was because of the confidentiality. But when he sent a document about the stuff that he had explored so far, I figured out this wasn’t any paid project. In fact, an exam for him. I knew the other person whom he restricted share with, had applied for an internship in this company, he must have done the same. So they both might have got the same assignment along with the others to submit reports within weeks. Now if I help him to get better from the others it would be unethical for sure. The report he gathered for me was completely useless and needed to be changed from A to Z.
So what did I do?
I can't say no to the face nor me, myself would allow something for me. As planned, I called in for a session and pointed out the things on his initial findings. I didn’t see anything useful there, and so explained them for his satisfaction and explored the task for a little bit. The best thing I did was give a summary of the task and point out the key points he should research about to move further. It was almost one hour and twenty minutes of session, one to one. I don't know if it was any beneficial to me in any way, but he must have got something far more important than his initial standpoint.
So the moral part is that, this one is an assessment task of him given by the company before recruiting. His initial plan was to make me find some crucial findings that would be enough to make his application better than the others but in reality, his capabilities are very low. After seeing his limitations I was like, if he bypasses this step then it would be surely injustice. But I did try to balance the both portions, so I gave him a brief summary and made things a little bit easier than before.
This kinda practice is intolerable, it damages the healthy atmosphere and pollutes the surrounding in one way or the other.
You’re sensible enough to have taken that step and helped him to summarize to avoid stories or issues later
Yes, I did.
