I'm Off-The-Wall and Grounded

(Edited)

I'll put my feet hand up to being off-the-wall, as it's not only a slight trait, but my full personality and my aura. Yet, when I reflect on my youth, back then, my eccentricity played out more as my thoughts and opinions were uncensored.

My shoemaker in Jamaica had a love-hate relationship with me because of my resolute attitude. As it happens, I'm a sucker for quality shoes, and I prefer genuine leather over synthetic materials as they tend to be more durable and comfortable. So one of my odd habits was wearing shoes to death and expecting my shoemaker to resurrect them.

I must have been about 11 or 12 years old, and my favourite pair of shoes had some big holes in the soles. One weekend I popped by my regular shoemaker for him to re-sole and refurbish my favourite pair of shoes. That was something that he had done several times before, and this time around, the shoemaker examined my shoes and presented them back to me stating that they were beyond repair.
I responded,— "You mean you don't have the skills to repair my shoes?"
The shoemaker replied,— "Little pickney, don't try my patience."
I explained how I thought that the repair was possible, and the shoemaker in a stern voice said,— "Milly, please come and see your shoes on my machine. If I make a new sole, the shoes are too damaged and I will not be able to put tacks in the soles.
My second response was "So, you don't have the skills or the tools as a shoemaker to repair my shoes."

The shoemaker asked me to leave and not provoke him, and he angrily gave me a pickup date for my shoes. I got to wear my favourite shoes for another semester and then my parents insisted and got me another pair of shoes which became my new favourite.

Old habits die hard, and recently a similar thing happened with my Converse shoes. I love Converse, and I'm a high-top girl, but somehow, my Converse always fall apart at the seams and when I took my shoes to the local shoemaker here in the UK, he told me that my shoes had seen their best days and were beyond repair.

I smiled and wished him a good day, while flashbacks of my childhood made me chuckle.

As much as I love the Converse style and fit of shoes, I had to be practical and I decided to look at some alternative brands with a similar flair, that were in a similar price bracket. My second choice was the Palladium boots, which seem more robust than the Converse.

Untitled design-52.jpg

Hubby had recently purchased a new pair of Vans high-top and recommended that I look online to see if I like the designs.

I was hesitant at first because I thought that the Vans were bulky and probably not as versatile as Converse or Palladium. As I would prefer something that could be worn with trousers, skirts, or dresses.

I ended up going for these high-top green Vans, that arrived today as a late birthday present.

The colour selection was simple because there's a lot of camouflage, khaki, and earth colours in my wardrobe and all my bags can be paired nicely with these boots. Secondly, the quality and thickness of these boots are more suitable for all-year wear, compared to the all-canvas lighter pair of Converse that I usually wear. So, I reckon that this pair of boots should last me at least 5 years without showing any signs of wear and tear since I won't wear them every day.
And I could not resist wearing a brand whose slogan is the definition of me:)

So my takeaway is that when purchasing, it's important to think about quality for longevity and comfort, as well as for versatility in being able to mix-match and interchange. Also, considering your personality is important. I'm tomboyish so these Vans work perfectly, and for the first time ever, my husband and I have identical boots.

This is a response to The Minimalist KISS blog Idea Week 69.. Ooh, my favourite number...

Thanks for stopping by peeps:)

Great choice and story. Nice to look back at that.
I like Vans and had many moons ago a pair I favourite for years until beyond repair hahaha sadly they don’t make that model anymore. I would buy in a wink if they do…
I have not many shoes… but treasure them and make sure the quality is good that they last.
Have a wonderful Thursday 👋🏻😊

Thank you 😊

Sadly they don’t make that model anymore.

Oh, don't you just hate that?

I do have not many shoes… but treasure them and make sure the quality is good and that they last.

I'm trying to cut back on the number of shoes, so I'm careful when parting with my money, and yes, quality shoes are important. My body aches when I go into stores like Primark and see the low quality of boots. I feel pain just from looking at them.

Thanks for stopping by.
Have a lovely day 🤗😍

You are welcome 👋🏻😊
Yes I soooo do. Sometimes things shouldn’t change hahaha
I even manage to buy sometimes 2 pair of certain clothes, when they are so cute and comfy. Just to have them a little longer. I never follow trends so I don’t mind hahaha 😜

Yes, I walk far around those shops. You get what you pay for.
You are welcome, thanks… it was and still is a nice day. Enjoy your evening. 🤗

Oh, they're lovely! I love the color, in particular, and they're not bulky in the way some of these sporty shoes tend to, you know? Indeed, of what I've seen of your fashion choices, the color is very you (as is the slogan! :P).

💯%

Recently, I stopped in a huge TK Maxx Store in Leicester. I like going there because of the variety and sales that they usually have. I saw a woman pick out a pair of shoes that looked like the wheels of a tractor. I could already feel the pain of a twisted ankle. I tend came home and saw similar shoes pop up in an Ad. I realised that she was going for the latest fashion. I think it's amazing how people are comfortable walking around looking like clowns, all for being in the latest fashion 😅

I'm so glad I'm not the only one to notice this! I keep saying shoes are getting bigger and clown-ier lately xD Suppose it would be fine, but only if she wanted to have big clowny shoes. But it simply being fashion has never struck me as a good reason to wear something. Wear your new shoes in great health, as we say here ;)

I, too, recently bought new boots. I am considering spending the serious cash for a proper pair of boots from the local White's Boots in Spokane, but I'm not a logger, firefighter, or otherwise working in a trade needing their heavy-duty clodhoppers. But their lighter-duty footwear still looks like it could almost last a lifetime, too.

I didn't know of that White's Boots brand, but I like them already. I like that Perry 6" Select, but I see what you mean about the price. Those boots look like a lifetime purchase, super comfortable and classy. I think buying one would be a justifiable treat.
If the size fits, I'd wear one of those boots, any day!🔥

I wouldn't have expected you to hear of them. It's a local factory serving a niche market. I'd like to see more businesses like that in more industries.

Ah, that's pretty cool, man!👍 Their stuff looks solid!
Yes, it would be great to see more businesses like that, similar to the scuba diving world, with companies that are niche. For real!

Nice new shoes!
That's pretty funny what you said to the shoemaker in your youth. I guess you didn't give the shoemaker the same response this time around as an adult. 😆

Haha! No, but this shoemaker realised what he was dealing with, so he took the time to explain that his shop has been in the community for decades, but with the change of the times, he no longer offers shoe repair and instead focuses on locksmithing. He said if he had glue and material he would glue it because I was adamant, but he said if I thought it was worth it, I could buy a shoe glue and try it, but it wouldn't last me long.
The customer who was waiting next in line said, "I'm sorry" when I walked by 😆😅

Shoes aren't really made to last anymore unfortunately 😕

👆 That's 💯% fact and what the shoemaker explained as why he no longer repairs shoes

Those vans boots are beautiful and if your closet is dominated by camouflage and earthy colors, they will go with everything. I laugh at your childhood experience with the cobbler 🤭🤭🤭🤭 sometimes we get so attached to a garment for comfort that as you mention we want it to death.

Excellent post ☺️☺️

That's a really nice pair of Vans, it looks both cool and comfy. And since it's Vans we're talking about, I bet they'll pass the durability test too. Yet, the color is where you've nailed it, Milly.

I love this shade of green, side by side with thalo green, both of these are the only shades of green I like.💚

Yes, I had to acknowledge that and make the decision with my head, and reflect on what the shoemaker told me about my last Converse.

Yeah, that shade of green is versatile and it suits me perfectly:)))

You're welcome, Milly. ✨

I had a fake pair of Vans a long time ago, yet they survived almost half a decade's worth of torture. Who knows how long an original pair would last. 😂

Sadly, we don't have original Vans here. And to be honest, most of the branded shoes we have here are mostly all fakes.

That was a discovery for me when I lived in the Philippines. It's difficult to differentiate between Class A or B goods.

I'm not surprised that you got good wear out of those fake Vans, though:)

It's difficult to differentiate between Class A or B goods.

Most replicas made in Vietnam and China are just as good as the originals, they've really upped their game in the last decade or so.

I'm not surprised that you got good wear out of those fake Vans, though

I try to take care of them, so they last at least 3 years to 5 years for me.

I laughed when I read this. Poor shoemaker must have been questioning his life choices at that moment and how best he can get away with murder.😂

But that's a right off the bat minimalistic way to live and I find it very admirable. The Vans are really catchy too.

Haha! That's exactly what the shoemaker was thinking. I remember seeing the deflated look on his face whenever I entered his shop with a bag in my hands.😆

Oh being a child, we always want our wants to be followed, glad that shoemaker still able to extend his patience for you hehehe.

Glad your parents bought you another pair and you love it too.

Glad that the shoemaker still able to extend his patience to you

Haha! That shoemaker was only ever happy to see me on the opposite side of the street waving hello. He got nervous whenever I entered his shop. The shoemakers in Moalboal were the same, but they did a pretty good job. Except for a repair guy in Alcantara who told me to purchase a new bag, when I brought a zipper for him to change.😅

Glad your parents bought you another pair and you love it too

They thought it was hilarious the number of times I got my shoes patched and re-soled.
I enjoyed taking my "dead" shoes and getting an appointment date to return for my old "new" shoes 😆

How are you dear friend @millycf1976 good morning
I loved the story about your childhood shoes, and how you persuaded the shoemaker to get them repaired.
I love the choice of sneakers you got as a belated birthday present.
I want to wish you a splendid day

Oh my goodness! That conversation with the shoe maker is hilarious. I can't stop laughing.

. So one of my odd habits was wearing shoes to death and expecting my shoemaker to resurrect them

I call this a toxic trait 😂.

So my takeaway is that when purchasing, it's important to think about quality for longevity and comfort, as well as for versatility in being able to mix-match and interchange.

A very valid point.

How beautiful your shoes, I really love that kind of shoes and I identify myself with your style. I'm a converse and comfortable shoes, I discovered Vans because my son and I wear the same shoes and one day I wore your shoes. I loved them, so comfortable.
I'm about to buy some for myself.
