Most of what we know is informative. But the problem is that human tendency is more adaptive to immediate results/consequences or outcomes, but it is indifferent to long-term consequences. That is why people smoke despite knowing......the fact that it could potentially damage the agility of lungs and could further lead to consequences like cancer.
On the other hand, we do not touch fire, because it will burn our hands and the consequences of the hazard is immediate, so we consciously avoid it. When the hazard or consequence becomes a slow and long-drawn process, we tend to remain indifferent to it.
That comes down to the question of how conscious we are whatever we do and second, whether we have an informed choice.
