Do bridges only serve cars?
Unfortunately, there are more men who build walls than those who build bridges.
- Chinese proverb -
As you know, I have a soft spot for bridges, whether large structures or a simple overpass.
This hidden fascination with bridges was "awakened" for me by a surveyor friend of mine who knows quite a bit about bridges: he worked on them topographically.
On the bridge in the photo, a very simple bicycle/pedestrian bridge and if necessary an ambulance can pass, he placed both the plinths for the stays (steel cables that hold the two piers) and the elevation of the deck.
Now, personally, I am not trained enough to technically appreciate any structure, human beings have built some really beautiful ones:
the Genoa Bridge, which is the result of futuristic studies, for the time in which it was built; the famous Brooklyn Bridge, which connects the island of Manhattan with Brooklyn almost 2 km long, crosses the East River, this just to name a couple.
What fascinated me, however, was by how, this friend of mine, explained a bridge conceptually.
A bridge unites
Indeed it does, a bridge unites two banks of a river, a bridge unites two valleys.
Bridges are a means of connection.
It is no coincidence that I used the Chinese Proverb in the opening.
If you remember, a few years ago a governor wanted to build a wall to prevent people from crossing the border.
Division
With walls you divide not unite!
Lately, even in interpersonal relationships, there are only divisions; the smartphone is one of the main causes.
I have also written an article about it.
I might sound conspiratorial, but if a people are divided they are more easily able to govern themselves...
It is a principle of the ancient Romans:
divide et impera.
But back to bridges.
I suffer from vertigo or, rather, height and emptiness bother me a lot; well, in order to become aware of this psychological attitude, I used a Tibetan bridge!
In this case, the Tibetan bridge put me in communication with my innermost part to begin to resolve a weakness of mine.
This post to say that bridges have more of a social value than a constructive or urbanistic one.
Think about it, and you will see that there is a bridge in your life that has meant a lot to you!
Beautiful.

This was a deep reflection on the nature of bridges and very enjoyable. I'm going to have to ponder this more.
