When the shine extinguishes freedom [EN/PT]

Perhaps most people dream of being famous. I'm sure that you, reading this, have at some point imagined yourself in the world of glamour, as an artist, a sports star, or something similar. It stirs people's imagination to live this reality that seems like a fairy tale: fans along the way, people wanting to be close to you, attract your attention, interviews, photos, and all that stuff. It all seems very good... but is it really?

Like many, I have imagined myself being famous, and personally, I would hate it. I have always been shy and increasingly reserved, even on social media, where I have been appearing less and less, even though I never appeared much to begin with. For someone like me, being the center of attention is not interesting. Being famous would be totally uncomfortable.

But of course, being famous has its advantages. Earning enough money to live well for the rest of your life, traveling to incredible places, meeting interesting people, living in a wonderful place, having nice cars, and everything else that money can buy. But in exchange, I would lose something perhaps more valuable than all of that: privacy.

I don't like to think that every time I did something, there would be someone with a camera pointed at me. Maybe even in my own home there would be people watching me, the famous paparazzi, crazy for a photo or a news story. Going out on the street would be hell: people wanting to talk to me, take pictures, and demand attention. What kind of life would that be? You wouldn't just lose your privacy, but also your freedom. Imagine having to stay locked up in places, living surrounded by security guards, unable to simply walk down the street, go to the market, or shop without being bothered. It's not possible. You gain money and fame, but in return you lose the freedom to be just an ordinary person who can do whatever they want.

I don't think being famous is a big advantage, nor do I believe it's the pinnacle of what a person can achieve, as many think. I'd rather be someone who achieves comfort and financial freedom through hard work, with a successful company, and live in anonymity. Enjoy all of the things I mentioned, but with few people really knowing who you are or what you have.

Being exposed by fame is not something that interests me and may even be dangerous in some ways. Your family would also need protection and would experience this exposure. Obsessive fans, opportunists, and even criminals could be lying in wait for an opening. What is the magic, after all, in all this glamour? If I became famous for some reason, my main goal would be to get out of it as quickly as possible and hope that people would forget me soon.

There is an overrated desire to be famous. People want to be adored by others, and that is dangerous and superficial, serving only to inflate the ego. I believe we don't need any of that. Being famous is just another problem in life. I would honestly run away from it.

Qual é a magia, afinal, nesse glamour todo?

Eu, sinceramente, fugiria disso.

I agree with you that fame is overrated. And you've reminded me of a documentary I watched. Where David Beckham was involved in a charity bike ride through the Amazon.

Towards the end of one day, a bike problem prevented the cyclists from continuing to their intended stop. And they had to set up camp to wait for replacement parts the following morning. During a chat, Beckham said it was the first evening in years that he wasn't scheduled to be doing something, or being somewhere. That struck me as being too high a price to pay for the trappings of fame.

My dear friend I love the way you reason and see things. For me I really want to be famous and enjoy all the glamours that comes with it despite the fact that it has it disadvantages.
Thanks for sharing

Being Famous can be a trap for some people, I see a lot of people get stardom but they can handle the pressure and pain that comes with it, some even become depressed

I love your point. There is truly an underrated desire to be famous. Many people have been famous in the wrong sense and though they have everything they wanted but they lose their privacy and freedom. What’s the essence of such a life then? It’s rubbish if I must say.

I believe fame is how you make it look. There are famous people who are very private and everyone respects that. Then there’s those whose business is all over the place.
