Lately, anyone who isn't at least a little afraid of climate change is either privileged enough to live in a stable place or completely oblivious. It's becoming increasingly clear that something is wrong. It's not just the constant news about earthquakes, floods, or even the tsunami that happened a few years ago, but rather the growing feeling that these changes are getting closer and closer, in a negative way, affecting all of us, albeit at different levels.

For those over 30, it was common to get used to the annual climate cycle, with its hot and cold periods within a reasonable pattern. However, temperatures are becoming more extreme, and devastating natural events are becoming more frequent. Every year, a new event. Every year, nature rebels and shows that, yes, something is happening. Is it just my impression, or am I watching too much news?

Here in Brazil, we are going through winter. I honestly don't remember feeling this cold. Maybe I'm becoming more sensitive with age and the climate changes between seasons are affecting me more... but wait, I'm not that old! My nose is always stuffy, I seem to have a constant cold, and breathing in such dry air is not comfortable at all. Okay, it's only about four months... And even though I prefer winter, lately it has been punishing us more, with increasingly lower temperatures. But that's nothing compared to sporadic events that are becoming more and more frequent.

Summer is another story, and in fact, it's what really scares me. Not just because of the heat, which is often extremely uncomfortable, but mainly because of what it brings with it: rain. For those who don't know, Brazil is one of the regions with the highest incidence of lightning in the world. And in summer, which seems to last almost 80% of the year (ignoring the other seasons), is when it rains the most, obviously. There are many storms and long periods of rain that cause flooding. And that's the sad part: during this period, many people lose everything, and there is little that can be done in the face of the force of nature. What scares me the most is lightning.

Earlier this year, there was such heavy rain in my region that not only did it flood several areas, but it also knocked down trees and ripped the roofs off dozens of houses. There was so much lightning that it looked like a light show, like a short-circuited sign lighting up the sky every second. I'm afraid of lightning, maybe you're not, because where you live it's not so common? But years ago, during a storm, lightning struck my house. It almost killed me and my family, and destroyed all the appliances in the living room, even though they were unplugged. How can you not be afraid of something like that?

The point is that the world is changing. I have a feeling that the climate is becoming increasingly extreme and that we need to be vigilant. I don't know where we're headed, but nature has been showing signs of fury, as if reminding us who is really in control. Until humanity takes serious measures to curb pollution and as long as profit is the undisputed goal, we will all pay the price. Until one day, perhaps, nature takes back the planet for itself. We have already caused too many problems.

Ultimamente, quem não está com pelo menos um pouco de medo das mudanças climáticas ou é um privilegiado por viver em um lugar estável, ou está totalmente desatento. Está cada vez mais evidente que algo está errado. Não se trata apenas das constantes notícias sobre terremotos, enchentes ou até mesmo o tsunami que aconteceu há alguns anos, mas sim da sensação crescente de que essas mudanças estão cada vez mais próxima, de forma negativa, atingindo todos nós, ainda que em diferentes níveis.

Para quem tem mais de 30 anos, já era comum se acostumar com o ciclo anual do clima, com seus períodos quentes e frios dentro de um padrão razoável. No entanto, as temperaturas estão cada vez mais extremas, e eventos naturais devastadores têm se tornado mais recorrentes. A cada ano, um novo acontecimento. A cada ano, a natureza se rebela e mostra que, sim, algo está acontecendo. Será que é só impressão minha ou estou vendo noticiários demais?

Aqui no Brasil, estamos passando pelo inverno. Eu, sinceramente, não me lembro de sentir tanto frio. Talvez eu esteja ficando mais sensível com a idade e as mudanças climáticas entre as estações estejam me afetando mais… mas peraí, eu não sou tão velho assim! Meu nariz vive entupido, pareço estar em uma gripe constante, e respirar com o ar tão seco não é nada confortável. Tudo bem, são apenas uns quatro meses… E mesmo eu preferindo o inverno, ultimamente ele tem castigado mais, com temperaturas cada vez mais baixas. Mas isso não é nada em comparação a eventos esporádicos que estão cada vez mais frequentes.

O verão é outra história e, na verdade, é o que realmente me causa medo. Não apenas pelo calor, que muitas vezes chega a ser extremamente desconfortável, mas principalmente pelo que ele traz junto: as chuvas. Para quem não sabe, o Brasil é uma das regiões com maior incidência de raios no mundo. E no verão, que parece durar quase 80% do ano (ignoremos as outras estações), é quando mais chove, obviamente. São muitas tempestades e longos períodos de chuva que causam enchentes. E essa é a parte triste: nesse período, muita gente perde tudo, e há pouco o que se possa fazer diante da força da natureza. O que mais me causa medo são os raios.

Ainda no começo deste ano, houve uma chuva tão forte na minha região que não só alagou diversas áreas, como também derrubou árvores e arrancou telhados de dezenas de casas. Foram tantos raios que parecia um espetáculo de luzes, como um letreiro em curto-circuito iluminando o céu a cada segundo. Eu tenho medo de raio, talvez você não tenha, porque onde vive isso não seja tão comum? Mas anos atrás, durante uma tempestade, um raio atingiu a minha casa. Quase matou a mim e à minha família, e destruiu todos os eletrodomésticos da sala, mesmo que estivessem desligados da tomada. Como não ter medo de algo assim?

A questão é que o mundo está mudando. Tenho a sensação de que o clima está ficando cada vez mais extremo e que precisamos estar atentos. Eu não sei onde vamos parar, mas a natureza tem mostrado sinais de fúria, como se estivesse nos lembrando de quem realmente está no controle. Enquanto a humanidade não tomar medidas sérias para frear a poluição e enquanto o lucro for o objetivo incontestável, todos pagaremos o preço. Até que um dia, talvez, a natureza tome de volta o planeta só para ela. Já causamos problemas demais.
