Between Dream and Duty [EN/PT]

Each country has its own methodology for compulsory services, each geared to specific needs and with conditions designed to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The defense of a country has always been important and continues to be so. After all, if a country doesn't have a good army, it's at the mercy of luck, just waiting for another country to see an opportunity right in front of its eyes. But how do you keep an army ready without compulsory conscription cycles? Well, I don't have an answer if that problem existed. I know that in some countries conscription is not totally compulsory, but there is an incentive for many young people to volunteer. But let's talk a little about my experience and my point of view regarding compulsory service here in Brazil.

I used to be in the military and did my compulsory period, and even though it was compulsory, I volunteered. My dream at the time was to serve my country. At the time, my thinking was divided into several facets, but the one that prevailed for me to make this decision was the unique opportunity. You see, here you can only enlist when you turn 18, I couldn't do it at any other age and I didn't want to let this opportunity to have this kind of experience pass me by. What's more, I was at a loss as to which path to take in my professional life, so I thought military service might help me make a decision.

Here in Brazil, once you've been selected for compulsory service, you have to stay until the end, and that lasts about 10 months. For me, it was an incredible experience. I made great friends, learned a lot of cool things and had experiences I would never have had anywhere else. In addition, serving in the army was important for me to acquire certain qualities, and discipline is something I still carry with me today. I believe that, when someone has the intention of being there, military service can be a very good experience and add many values to life.

However, there is a catch: I was undecided about what I was going to do and willing to face this challenge, which is not easy, and I really wanted to be there. But there are people who don't fit this profile and are forced to serve in the army. I think that's unfair, because if a person has already made their plans or doesn't want to join, it's a nightmare that will last almost a year and delay their life.

I believe that the way in which enlistment takes place, especially nowadays when the generation is "softer", is not ideal. Times have changed. There should be some kind of aptitude test and, above all, a very important question for the person to be chosen: "Do you want to be part of the army and abandon your plans for 10 months?" Why should this question be asked? So that both sides are satisfied. If a person doesn't want to be there and it's a torment in their life, what would be the point? What kind of soldier would you have for your country? The worst possible. If the person wants to, then give preference to them, which would be a big difference and would be fairer both for those who would like to get on with their lives and for those who would like to be there and aren't always chosen.

My choice was one of the best I've ever made and I have no regrets about it, on the contrary, I'm very proud of it and have many stories to tell. But I'm sure that if you asked someone who didn't want that for life and had to serve in the army, the answer would be completely different. Many things should be changed, but we also shouldn't forget that an army is a country's main defense against threats, and like it or not, someone needs to be there. If you don't want that for your life, just wish yourself luck when it comes to your turn.

Afinal, se um país não possui um bom exército, ele fica à mercê da sorte, apenas esperando que outro país veja uma oportunidade bem diante de seus olhos. Mas como manter um exército pronto sem a realização de ciclos de alistamento obrigatório? Bem, eu não tenho uma resposta se esse problema existisse. Sei que em alguns países o alistamento não é totalmente obrigatório, mas existe um incentivo para que muitos jovens se voluntariem. Mas, vamos falar um pouco da minha experiência e do meu ponto de vista relacionado ao serviço obrigatório aqui no Brasil.

Eu já fui militar e cumpri o período obrigatório, e, apesar de ser obrigatório, fui voluntário. Meu sonho naquela época era servir ao meu país. Naquele tempo, meu pensamento estava dividido em várias faces, mas a que predominou para eu tomar essa decisão foi a oportunidade única. Veja bem, aqui só se pode alistar quando você completa 18 anos, eu não poderia fazer isso em outra idade e não queria deixar essa oportunidade de ter esse tipo de experiência passar. Além disso, eu estava perdido sobre qual caminho seguir na minha vida profissional, então imaginei que o serviço militar poderia me ajudar a tomar alguma decisão.

Aqui no Brasil, depois que você é escolhido para cumprir o serviço obrigatório, você deve permanecer até o fim, e isso dura cerca de 10 meses. Para mim, foi uma experiência incrível. Fiz grandes amizades, aprendi muitas coisas legais e tive experiências que nunca teria em outro lugar. Além disso, servir ao exército foi importante para que eu adquirisse algumas qualidades, e a disciplina é algo que carrego comigo até hoje. Acredito que, quando alguém tem a intenção de estar ali, o serviço militar pode ser uma experiência muito boa e agregar muitos valores à vida.

No entanto, há um porém: eu estava indeciso sobre o que iria fazer e disposto a enfrentar esse desafio, que não é fácil, e queria muito estar ali. Mas há pessoas que não se encaixam nesse perfil e são obrigadas a servir ao exército. Isso eu acho injusto, pois, se uma pessoa já tem seus planos traçados ou não deseja fazer parte, será um pesadelo que durará quase um ano e atrasará sua vida.

Acredito que a forma como o alistamento ocorre, especialmente nos dias de hoje, quando a geração está mais "mole", não é a ideal. Os tempos mudaram. Deveria existir algum tipo de teste de aptidão e, principalmente, uma pergunta muito importante para que a pessoa fosse escolhida: "Você deseja fazer parte do exército e abandonar seus planos por 10 meses?" Por que essa pergunta deveria ser feita? Para que ambos os lados fiquem satisfeitos. Se uma pessoa não deseja estar ali e aquilo é um tormento em sua vida, qual seria a vantagem? Que tipo de soldado você teria para o seu país? O pior possível. Se a pessoa deseja, então dê preferência a essas, o que já seria um grande diferencial e seria mais justo tanto para aqueles que gostariam de seguir com suas vidas quanto para aqueles que gostariam de estar ali e nem sempre são escolhidos.

A minha escolha foi uma das melhores que fiz e não tenho arrependimentos disso, pelo contrário, tenho muito orgulho e muitas histórias para contar. Mas tenho certeza de que, se você perguntasse para alguém que não queria isso para a vida e teve que servir ao exército, a resposta seria completamente diferente. Muitas coisas deveriam ser mudadas, mas também não devemos esquecer que um exército é a principal defesa de um país contra ameaças, e goste ou não, alguém precisa estar ali. Se você não quer isso para a sua vida, apenas deseje ter sorte quando chegar a sua vez.
