My First BBH Dividends (And Learning About $GIFU)

Diving Back Into Hive: A Journey Through Communities and Tokens

Earlier this week, I found myself setting up a new account on Hive. This isn’t my first time here—I was active a few years ago—but sudden life changes meant I lost access to my old account. Picking up the pieces, I remembered how much Hive thrives on its vibrant communities. But honestly? I couldn’t recall any of the ones I loved last time around.

So, I did what any newcomer (or returnee) would do: I started scrolling.

Stumbling Upon $BBH

Before long, I came across a post that felt familiar: 300 SUPPORTERS - WITNESS UPDATE FOR THE 4TH DEC 2024.

Curiosity piqued, I dove in and discovered the $BBH token, short for Bitcoin Backed Hive. It’s backed by a community of the same name and led by @bradleyarrow. The project centers around two key features:

  1. Weekly “Drips” of Tokens – Hold $BBH, and you’ll receive a payout every Saturday. The amount and types of tokens depend on your holdings.
  2. Tipping Made Easy – You can tip $BBH to others by simply commenting !BBH on their posts.

To learn more, I explored their whitepaper. It’s a bit dense, but I got the gist: dividends come from the creator’s own Hive network earnings, creating a small economy within the chain.

Testing the Waters

Excited to try it out, I bought ~1,000 $BBH on TribalDex. This was the minimum to activate tipping and to start earning dividends.

And today, being Saturday, my first payout arrived! 🎉

For holding 1,079.44 $BBH, I received:

  • 0.004 $SWAP.HIVE
  • 6.1259 $SWAP.GIFU

In USD terms, that’s about $0.001 in Hive and $0.0004 in $GIFU—small, but enough to make me curious.

What’s $GIFU?

Before today, I hadn’t heard of $GIFU. Turns out, it’s a deflationary memetility token on the Binance Smart Chain, designed to support GIF artists. ("Memetility" means that right now, the token is relying on community engagement to gain interest, while its developers create the platform that will give the token its utility.)

Holders of $GIFU will be able to commission custom GIFs directly from artists, creating a micro-economy for digital art. Its deflationary model reduces supply over time, potentially increasing value as the ecosystem grows.

Compared to larger platforms like Ethereum-based NFTs, $GIFU feels refreshingly niche—focused on micro-commissions and fostering direct connections between artists and fans.

Receiving $GIFU as a dividend was a surprise, but it’s exactly what I love about Hive. Engaging with one community often leads you to discover entirely new ecosystems. Will I buy more $GIFU? Maybe. But for now, I’m just enjoying learning about its unique approach to blockchain creativity.

What’s Next?

I’m still piecing together some parts of the $BBH ecosystem, like $BBHO and how it integrates with their frontend. I’ve also heard about BBHO Power Up Day (BPUD)—it sounds like Hive’s monthly staking event but with a $BBH twist.

The beauty of Hive is how every rabbit hole leads to a new discovery. For me, $BBH and $GIFU have been the start of a renewed exploration of blockchain communities. Who knows what I’ll stumble upon next?

Have you explored these tokens or other Hive projects? I’d love to hear about your experiences and recommendations!
