Flood, A Common Natural Disaster!

I'm from the southern part of the country(Nigeria) with lots of water, and atleast every year, we expect flood, if not from the Dam opening, then from Rain. I've never experienced any natural disaster firsthand that made me leave my house to go live with others, but I've had people around me who have been victims of natural disaster and it wasn't an easy journey for them and also me. Seeing my friends become homeless and barely being able to feed for months with their family is very devastating.

I live in the highland in yenagoa which is the capital of Bayelsa state Nigeria but then we have the lower parts of the country where when the flood comes, sometimes it covers almost to the top of the roof of most houses. Have you seen a two storeyed building being covered up with flood water? That's how bad it is sometimes.

I remember one time some years ago where the flood came and people were running Helter skelter from place to place to look for where to stay at least. Due to the flood damaging so many things, it increased the price of goods.
My aunt and her family came over to stay with us for a couple of months. My friend Cynthia and her family had to relocate to the village because of the flood. Since my house was packed, I couldn't accommodate her at my place so she and her family had to go to the village for a couple of months until the flood water went down. They lost a lot of properties and honestly for them, they had no choice but to travel back to the village.

I felt so bad for my friend because I knew how hard it was for her to stay away from her friends and also start a new daily routine. Because of the flood, she missed her Post UTME exam ( an entrance exam into the university that's written once every year) Transportation from where she was down to her center for the exam was far too high and even the road was bad due to the flood. Even my younger sis almost missed her exams due to the flood, but thankfully she didn't.

I've seen so many people become homeless for months due to flood and it's really heartbreaking. Have you experienced any type of natural disaster firsthand?

Truly sad to hear, i know the economics of it probably wouldnt be viable in your area, but instantly my mind started thinking, like is there a way we could start building floating foundations or something? so when flood happens, can like, rise, and anchor like a boat? i know it sounds silly, but might work ... but yeah so hard in that part of the world to innovate, no funds - hope your family and friends are safe

Disasters be it natural or man made are always a threat to humanity. I have heard several of such stories and I am always left to sympathize with suchvictims. Relocating to a new environment is not always an easy task.

It's not, especially when it's impromptu. It can disorganize one mentally, just the thought of relocating

It's terrifying and heartbreaking when natural disasters occur and more so when they are destructive, making people suffer and forcing them to leave and relocate. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Hope they are safe where they moved.

Flooding is a very serious issue that could lead to loss of lives and even properties if not properly controlled. It's sad that even the government see these things but still somehow don't care to even help to find a solution.
