When Chaos, Comedy, and Guns Collide: "Mission Possible" Review

I decided to take a break from my busy days to see a short Korean movie from the list I have, "Mission Possible" felt exciting to see first and really, I’m glad I did. Some movies don’t try too hard to be deep, they just want to entertain you, make you laugh, and keep you glued to the screen for a short while. This movie falls neatly into that category and it does it's job really well.

Released in 2021, "Mission Possible" is a 1 hour 44 minutes action-comedy that revolves around gun-smuggling, mistaken identity, and a whole lot of crazy and funny situations that made sense within the story. From the very beginning of the movie, I felt a huge sense of familiarity while watching it and that wasn't the surprising thing.

This movie reminded me so much of a series I watched late last year, "Trigger". The similarities with both were what was surprisingly specific. First of all, "Trigger" was about gun-smuggling, just like "Mission Possible". Secondly, both the movie and the series starred Kim Young-kwang as the lead actor. And lastly, the amazing part, his acting didn’t really change much in both roles.

It felt more like he was just being himself, the same Kim Young-kwang I remembered from Trigger. And the sweetest thing about the movie is that instead of the similarities to be a problem, it didn't. The excitement wasn't taken away, it made the movie feel familiar and comfortable.

So in this movie, Kim Young-kwang plays Woo Soo-han, a private detective who isn't exactly at the top of his game, clumsy, funny in being clueless, and it always looks like he’s one bad decision away from complete disaster. Yet somehow, things keep working out for him mostly by accident lol. I mean, he was mistaken to be a detective who knows his job to go on a mission but he took the opportunity because there was so much money in it for him, I could have thought it would be a mission impossible.

Then the female lead, Yoo Da-hee, played by Lee Sun-bin, that I genuinely love her character. Unlike what I see in a lot of their action movies, she’s not the boring, helpless female character. Da-hee is not the type who exists just to be rescued. Even though her partner, Soo-han is mostly acting like a fool who doesn’t fully understand what he’s doing, she clearly had a lot under control. She’s sharp, confident, and capable of taking care of herself when faced with real threats. Watching her balance her partner's chaos with calm competence was really cool.

Their dynamic is where a lot of the humor came from and I couldn't get enough of it. I really love their mismatched chemistry that brings all the comedy to the story. Soo-han stumbled his way through danger, while Da-hee made sure to calculate her next move. Even with the laughter, the movie stayed focused on action and survival too, which made it even more enjoyable for me.

One of the craziest and funniest moments in the movie that I really couldn’t keep to myself afterward lol, involved a real detective who got into an accident. Through a chain of ridiculous events, Soo-han ends up using that accident to his advantage by pretending to be the detective who got into the accident. Then it got really wild, the same detective got into the same style of accident again at the end of the movie, like again!

I remember laughing and thinking, "There’s no way this just happened twice". It was so absurd that it crossed into comedy gold. It’s definitely that kind of thing you tell someone in a story mid-movie time, I had to tell my mum about it after.

Now let’s talk about the villain who made me laugh at the end of the movie, I found myself laughing so hard that I almost forgot he was supposed to be the bad guy. It was quite unnecessary for the storyline but then I appreciate the writer's desire to end the movie on a lighter note. And to be fair, it wasn't like it was so out of place. It added to the comedy for me.

Overall, Mission Possible was a fun ride from start to finish and a good break from my busy days. I enjoyed every minute of this 1 hour 44 minutes movie, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone who enjoys action mixed with humor and especially to those who prefer their action movies without romance. I'll love to rate it 8/10.
