Love In The Time Of AI: "Wonderland" Movie Review
All the time I've been hearing about the movie "Wonderland", I never imagined it'd turn out to be a story about AI but I'm not sure what I was expecting to see. In any case, I enjoyed my time on this one but more than that, it provoked my thoughts until the very end. Is this even possible?
The first sweetest part of this movie that drew me in were the powerful cast combination, the... Gong Yoo, Bae Suzy, Park Bo-gum, Choi Woo-sik, Jung Yu-mi and Tang Wei, who I'm just learning about but totally love her for the role. What kept going is the intriguing storyline it has.
"Wonderland" is a 1 hour 53 minutes movie released in the year 2024 focusing on the genre, sci-fi. The movie is packed with wonderful scenes, you'd just keep wondering until the end, no wonder the title of the movie. When it started, I had no doubt I'll be disappointed and it didn't.
The story is about an AI program that allows people communicate with the virtual versions of their comatose or deceased loved ones. A flight attendant communicates with her comatose boyfriend from space, a dead mother spends time with her daughter online from faraway land.
As unrealistic this movie may seem, it kinda pictures the unlimited power of AI but I'm choosing to believe the movie is just playing with my thoughts, I still think it's impossible to communicate with the dead through AI. This movie made a good impression on that anyways.
The cinematography was good even with the quality I watched it with, I especially like the part where a character requested how he wants his AI self to talk, act and live when he is dead. It was unrealistic but soothing to see how he happily dies knowing his memory will live on in devices.
Right from the first scene of a lady waiting for her flight having a conversation with our "Gong Yoo", I loved the chemistry there but sadly, it didn't go beyond that but it definitely left a good feeling for viewers. It took me sometime into the movie to realize she wasn't real and there're others like her.
I think the name is perfect for the storyline with the way it kept me wondering while the story goes on, defying a lot of beliefs I've had but it was still a good watch. I like the conversations between the lovers, the comatose boyfriend in space and his girl, their chemistry was so good.
Choi Woo-sik role in this movie took me back to his role in "Blood", they are very much related and so cool to see him play in, than rom-com roles I'd say. But my favourite character in this movie has to be Park Bo-gum where he played as a comatose patient and space traveller, so cool.
Don't expect much romance from this one as that wasn't the focus but the small touch was beautiful to see, and the love between mother and child almost got me teary, I just remembered the part where the little girl is told the truth about her mother she's been talking to on a device.
While the story is kind of like a consolation to those left behind after losing a loved one, it also forms a hope inside them that they will see each other soon which can not be possible in their lifetime and so, there are downsides to the invention, of course, like every other invention.
