Land 1.75 - Impact On Small Land Owners | Splinterlands #424
Alright, let's talk about Land 1.75. It's arriving on March 18th, and while some are hyped about the new mechanics, I'm sitting here trying to figure out if my two little plots are going to make or break me.
For those who don't know, I spent $255 on acquiring my land, thinking it was a solid investment. Spoiler alert: it hasn't been. Right now, the cheapest common magical plots sell for $23 each. Splinterlands land plots have also been impacted by the NFT bear market that's been occurring for the past few years. However, the two land plots have been yielding SPS, but have you seen the SPS price of late? It's been fighting a battle of a downward trend since its heydays in 2021/22.
Nonetheless, hope isn't entirely lost. With Land 1.75, my two plots will finally start producing wood. That sounds promising, right? Well, maybe and I am not quite sure as everything seems hazy now (well at least for me).
Land 1.75 Impacts On My Two Plots
From what I understand, this update changes the way resources are gathered. Now, you need a combination of materials to harvest rewards, meaning I either sell the wood produced or inject more funds to purchase other resources to be able to harvest.
So, let's do some quick back-of-the-napkin math to see what my production looks like:
- Plot 1 (Shard Mine → Wood Producer)
- Base PP: 5653
- Total PP: 6218
- Estimated Wood per Hour: ~124.36
- Plot 2 (Grain Farm → Wood Producer)
- Base PP: 6002
- Total PP: 6602
- Estimated Wood per Hour: ~132.04
- Total Across Both Plots
- ~256.4 Wood per hour
- ~6154 Wood per day
That sounds decent, but here's the problem: Will I still need grain and other resources to make this work? From what I understand. But will the Shard Mine plot no longer produce SPS? See, this is where it gets tricky. If we're just looking at raw production, I'm all for it. But with three new resource requirements being added, it means even more costs to service my land.
Right now, Land seems like a jigsaw puzzle where I'm missing half the pieces with two small plots. At this point, it seems like to have a fully sustainable land -- you need to have scales of economies with more land plots to be fully sustainable. If you own a wide variety of land that produces all types of resources, you're golden. You can run a self-sustaining operation and probably even profit from selling excess materials.
But if you're like me just trying to make two plots work, you'll likely need to trade for missing resources, adding yet another layer of complexity.
The Lack of Clarity
My biggest concern is that Land 1.75's mechanics aren't entirely clear yet. Sure, we've seen breakdowns of how it's supposed to work, but the intricate details are still vague. How exactly will the economy balance itself? Will resource costs scale fairly? Or will small landowners like me be left scrambling to stay afloat? Also, I hope the update brings a more intuitive experience that makes managing land easier, but right now, I feel like I'm walking into an impromptu test I didn't study for.
What's Next?
Honestly, I'm in wait-and-see mode. March 18th will give me the answers I need, but until then, I'm cautiously optimistic. If things turn out well, maybe this update will breathe new life into splinterlands' land economy. If not, I may need to consider selling my two land plots especially if I am unable to sustain them without bringing in external monies.
At this point, my strategy is simple:
- See how Land 1.75 plays out before committing more resources.
- Evaluate wood production rates and whether trading is viable.
- Decide if I should hold onto my land or cut my losses.
Concluding Thoughts
March 18th is going to be an exciting time for the splinterlands land game and economy. However, I am unsure as to whether it is benefitting those with huge assets of land plots and the small landowners who are being left behind.
