espero hayan tenido una buena semana. En esta oportunidad quería traerles las vibras del mes de octubre. Sé que a todos nos encanta diciembre y que desde septiembre ya se siente el ambiente navideño, pero a mí me fascina octubre porque es el mes ideal para sacar todas esas historias de terror del baúl de los recuerdos. Soy muy fanática de escuchar relatos de mitos, leyendas y cuentos, así que me di a la tarea de investigar cuáles son los más conocidos de la isla para compartirlos con ustedes.

I hope you had a good week. This time I wanted to bring you the vibes of the month of October. I know we all love December and that the Christmas spirit is already in the air since September, but I love October because it's the perfect month to pull all those horror stories out of the memory chest. I'm a big fan of listening to myths, legends, and stories, so I took it upon myself to research the most well-known ones on the island to share with you.

El Cristo del Buen Viaje

Para serles sincera, lo único que conocía de esta imagen era que bendecía a los pescadores y traía buenas temporadas de pesca. Pero la historia de cómo llegó a la isla la desconocía. Les cuento: esta imagen religiosa arribó a la isla en una embarcación que debió hacer una parada en el puerto de Pampatar por el mal tiempo, antes de continuar hacia su destino en Santo Domingo. Cuando el clima mejoró y el barco estaba listo para partir, nuevamente comenzaban fuertes lluvias y el mal clima que no permitía avanzar con seguridad. Además, la imagen se volvía pesada e imposible de mover. Tras varios intentos fallidos, interpretaron esto como un signo de que debía permanecer en la isla.

To be honest, all I knew about this image was that it blessed fishermen and brought good fishing seasons. But I didn't know the story of how it came to the island. Let me tell you: this religious image arrived on the island on a boat that had to stop at the port of Pampatar due to bad weather before continuing on to its destination in Santo Domingo. When the weather improved and the boat was ready to leave, heavy rains and bad weather began again, preventing it from proceeding safely. In addition, the image became heavy and impossible to move. After several failed attempts, they interpreted this as a sign that it should remain on the island.

Los Chinamitos

Este es un relato que la mayoría de los habitantes de la isla ha escuchado. Se dice que aquellos niños que fallecieron sin ser bautizados, o que fueron considerados malos, quedan vagando en el mundo de los vivos. Encantan e intentan engañar a los pequeños con su apariencia infantil para así llevarlos a su mundo y tener con quién jugar. Aunque parecen niños comunes, cuentan que caminan de puntillas y que tienen orejas puntiagudas que esconden con su cabello para no ser reconocidos.

The Chinamitos

This is a story that most of the island's inhabitants have heard. It is said that children who died without being baptized, or who were considered bad, remain wandering in the world of the living. They enchant and try to trick little ones with their childlike appearance in order to take them to their world and have someone to play with. Although they look like ordinary children, it is said that they walk on tiptoes and have pointed ears that they hide with their hair so as not to be recognized.

La Chinigua

Esta leyenda tiene varias versiones, pero compartiré la que yo conozco. La Chinigua es el espíritu de una mujer de gran belleza que en vida coqueteó con muchos hombres, pero nunca entregó su corazón ni se enamoró. Al morir, no pudo entrar al cielo y fue enviada de vuelta a la tierra para encontrar su verdadero amor. Desde entonces vaga por las carreteras en las madrugadas buscándolo, y a los hombres de los que llega a enamorarse los persigue hasta llevárselos al más allá.

The Chinigua is the spirit of a woman of great beauty who flirted with many men during her lifetime, but never gave her heart away or fell in love. El canto de los perros

Esto no es una leyenda ni un mito, pero sí un dicho muy conocido entre los pobladores. A mí, cuando era pequeña, me decían que si los perros ladraban sin razón era porque estaban viendo un espíritu. Lo curioso es que, al investigar, descubrí que se dice que este dicho proviene de la isla de Coche, aunque la verdad desconozco si realmente su origen está allí.

The barking of dogs

This is not a legend or a myth, but a well-known saying among the locals. When I was little, I was told that if dogs barked for no reason, it was because they were seeing a spirit. The funny thing is that, upon researching, I discovered that this saying is said to come from Coche Island, although I don't really know if that's where it actually originated.
