Today I met up with some freshly minted Hiveans at our usual spot, @jersonsweetplace. As you might imagine, I'm attempting to be as good of a mentor as I can be, so follow-ups and little workshops are needed. However, one of the newly minted Hiveans invited a friend, and of course, that meant another onboard.

Truth is, cryptocurrencies in other countries are not such a taboo as they are here. @fercerrudo, my newest onboard, informed me they’re commonplace in Argentina. More than that, she said it was an unwelcome change to revert back to using physical money, as most people back home pay digitally.

This revelation simply tells me there's plenty of work ahead for us. And although it may seem like I'm taking on Goliath, I'm happy to report I'm not doing it alone. More and more people are spreading the word, and this is precisely how we reach escape velocity.

All that said, at some point in our conversation, @fercerrudo asked me, point blank, a question that—although it may seem confrontational—is a fair one:

What's in it for you? What do you get?

I don't take offense when people ask me this. It does seem rather strange that I'm onboarding people and doing workshops without asking for money. But the truth is, while I’m motivated by altruistic notions inside my heart, I’m also not entirely unaware of how this could benefit me personally.

I'm a member of this tribe through and through. I've been here for eight years and have been able to grow my investment to a size I could’ve never imagined when I first started. Of course, if I compare myself to whales, I’m nothing but a mosquito—but I too once had 15 tokens in my wallet and wondered what it would be like to actually make a difference here. I’ve not forgotten those early days at all.

Because of this, I feel a sort of obligation to this place. It’s not only given me a platform to lay out my thoughts, my frustrations, but it’s also provided me with a resource—one that has saved me in a pinch more than a few times. When my car got destroyed, it was my tokens that helped me get it up and running. When our home got flooded, it was Hive tokens that allowed us to repair it. An insurance of a kind, I submit—but of course, a lot more than that too.

I looked at @fercerrudo and told her that yes, I do expect to make money doing this. That if I’m able to onboard enough people to Hive—enough people from here, from my town—if I can get businesses to accept HBD and to participate in our economy, if I can pull that off... I will effectively lower my cost of living by orders of magnitude and, let's be honest, help the valuation of Hive along the way.

As someone who holds onto these tokens like little treasures, anything I can do to make them shine even brighter makes financial sense. This, as I said, on top of the fact that their shine can be shared with all those who are around me as well.

So yeah, there is something in it for me. I’m doing this for me too, after all. But here’s the kicker—the part that I absolutely love about it:

If I succeed, everyone else does as well.

Now that, that… is music to my ears.

Hoy me reuní con algunos Hiveanos recién llegados en nuestro lugar de siempre, @jersonsweetplace. Como te imaginarás, estoy intentando ser el mejor mentor que puedo, así que se necesitan seguimientos y pequeños talleres. Sin embargo, uno de los nuevos Hiveanos, @beca67, invitó a una amiga, y por supuesto, eso significó una nueva persona a bordo.

La verdad es que las criptomonedas en otros países no son un tabú como lo son aquí. @fercerrudo, mi más reciente onboard, me contó que en Argentina son algo común. Más aún, me comentó que fue un cambio incómodo volver a usar dinero en efectivo, ya que la mayoría de la gente allá paga de forma digital.

Esa revelación me deja claro que tenemos mucho trabajo por delante. Y aunque parezca que me estoy enfrentando a Goliat, me alegra decir que no estoy solo. Cada vez más personas están corriendo la voz, y es precisamente así como alcanzamos la velocidad de escape.

Dicho eso, en algún momento de nuestra conversación, @fercerrudo me preguntó, de forma directa, una pregunta que aunque pueda parecer confrontativa, es una pregunta justa:

¿Y tú qué ganas con esto? ¿Qué sacas tú de todo esto?

No me ofendo cuando me preguntan eso. Sí parece algo raro que esté trayendo gente a Hive y dando talleres sin cobrar nada. Pero la verdad es que, aunque me motivan algunas nociones altruistas en el corazón, no soy ajeno a cómo esto también podría beneficiarme personalmente.

Soy miembro de esta tribu con todas las letras. Llevo ocho años aquí y he logrado hacer crecer mi inversión a un tamaño que jamás imaginé cuando comencé. Claro, si me comparo con las ballenas, no soy más que un mosquito, pero yo también una vez tuve 15 tokens en mi wallet y me preguntaba cómo sería poder realmente hacer una diferencia aquí. No he olvidado esos días iniciales.

Por eso, siento una especie de obligación con este lugar. No solo me ha dado una plataforma para expresar mis pensamientos y frustraciones. También me ha brindado un recurso, uno que me ha salvado más de una vez en momentos difíciles. Cuando destruyeron mi carro, fueron mis tokens los que me ayudaron a repararlo. Cuando se inundó nuestra casa, fueron los tokens de Hive los que nos permitieron arreglarla. Un tipo de seguro, podría decir, pero mucho más que eso también.

Miré a @fercerrudo y le dije que sí, que sí espero ganar dinero haciendo esto. Que si logro traer suficientes personas a Hive, suficientes personas de aquí, de mi pueblo... Si logro que negocios acepten HBD y participen en nuestra economía, si logro eso: estaré reduciendo mi costo de vida en órdenes de magnitud. Y, seamos honestos, ayudando a la valorización de Hive en el proceso.

Como alguien que guarda estos tokens como pequeños tesoros, todo lo que pueda hacer para hacerlos brillar aún más tiene todo el sentido financiero del mundo. Esto, como dije, además del hecho de que ese brillo se puede compartir con todos los que me rodean.

Así que sí, sí hay algo para mí en esto. Estoy haciendo esto por mí también. Pero aquí viene la parte que más me gusta:

Si yo tengo éxito, todos los demás también lo tienen...

Y eso, eso... es música para mis oídos.
