Trump - the chosen man

avatar

I’m trying to have real, productive talks with people about the political mess we’re in. We’re more divided than ever, and I’m convinced most of this split is cooked up on purpose. I don’t see much point in treating politics like a fantasy football league, but for some reason, I’m in the minority on that.

One line that always smacks me like a pool ball in a sock is when people say God picked Trump. Good folks—people I’ve known forever, way before Trump even thought about running—tell me God works in mysterious ways. They argue it doesn’t matter if I can’t wrap my head around Trump being His imperfect tool. I can’t recall the exact words, but it was something like, “God uses imperfect people for His perfect plan.”

Lucky for me, I’ve been working on keeping my cool lately. Maybe it’s age, or maybe it’s just me learning to breathe through the nonsense—who knows. Still, I’m a sucker sometimes, so I asked.

“Trump surviving two assassination attempts proves it,” they said. “God chose him to lead us.” My brain just sank into despair hearing that.

Surviving proves it?

I don’t want to dive into a God debate this time—I’ll dodge that trap for now. But I do want to poke at this notion of knowing God’s will. I’m not trying to attack anyone’s beliefs; I’m just curious if these questions even come up. In a presidential race, aren’t all the candidates praying too? Don’t they all think God’s got their back? We’ve seen it—Ted Cruz claiming he’s chosen, Marco Rubio getting anointed by religious bigwigs. Are we just cherry-picking the stories that match our team?

I’m not asking because I need answers handed to me. I think we should all chew on this ourselves—test if our take on God’s will holds up. That said, I’ve got a wild historical nugget to share, one that might shake this “survival means approval” idea loose.

The Infamous Table Leg

July 20, 1944. The big-shot Führer’s huddled with his loyal crew in the Wolf’s Lair, his East Prussia HQ. A colonel named Claus von Stauffenberg had a plan: kill Hitler and topple the Nazis for good. He stuffed a bomb in a briefcase, set to rewrite history. Everything went smooth—he slipped it under the table near Hitler during a secret meeting.

Stauffenberg faked a phone call excuse, stepped out, and boom—the blast hit. He thought it was done, took off for Berlin to link up with the resistance. What he didn’t know? Hitler survived. Against all odds, some guy had nudged the briefcase just enough that the leg of this huge oak table took the brunt of the explosion. Saved by a table leg—divine intervention, if you buy that logic.

Historians say Hitler strutted back to the wrecked room that same day with Mussolini, bragging that surviving meant God and destiny confirmed his purpose.

Why This Matters

This bugs me because it’s like waving a white flag. If we buy that God’s directing this trainwreck, who are we to argue? It’s surrender, plain and simple—and the real fight hasn’t even kicked off yet.

Stepping back from tribal politics, from this political football game, isn’t just good for our sanity (which should be obvious by now). It’s also best for the country we claim to care about. If we can’t hold power to account because “God chose them,” we’re just rebooting a system we ditched ages ago. I thought we were done with kings and God’s middlemen. Guess we’re stuck rereading that chapter

Almost all dictators or wannabe dictators try to justify their grab on power saying they were "chosen by God". Even Hitler used this argument.

Some people love to be brainwashed and stay brainwashed because it's easier to let everything to God and do nothing. It's 2025, these people should be less and less, but things are working in the wrong direction, unfortunately.

Bad or indoctrinated? More like useless and open to being manipulated.

im not religious, but im pretty sure the idea is that we've all been chosen by god and we've all got divine backing. Isn't that what we're supposed to take comfort in?
On another note, from across the pond over here, American politics is all looking quite exciting (for good or bad... - no judgement of course, in the eyes of the infinite!)
So for the sake of neutrality, what would you say are the top 3 worst aspects of the republicans being in, and what are the top 3 best aspects? And if you could be number one advisor to the president, what advice would you give to help him do better?
Eventually I feel it is we the people who must rally to create a better world for ourselves, which is why I love Hive. More communities, lifting each other up, helping each other, learning to live outside our dependency on legacy power.

Basil, you are making me think hard bro. I feel like putting salt in your coffee.

ok...

3 good things

  1. The witch hunt on crypto is over
  2. Border has been secured
  3. Ross was pardoned

3 bad things

  1. Tariffs adding to inflation
  2. We've exited the Global stage (thus lost influence)
  3. Safety net is being destroyed

You know... i started with the good things cuz it was hard to think about.

haha. I'll be careful not to take my eyes off my coffee when I make one next....
but in all seriousness, its important to do the donkey work whenever we have political discussions, especially if we want to encourage others to speak as well and to try to soften the polarising lines that people seem so divided by. You did good!
Definitely sounds like the new administration are taking risks and thats always scary! Obviously its nice to see the crypto stuff, but without a safety net and global influence, do you think America is going to become vulnerable to attack? Or is it more a financial disaster that you see incoming?

The whole "survival = divine approval" logic is something, by that standard, cockroaches are the real chosen ones hahahah. People love to twist faith into a political argument, but questioning it doesn’t mean rejecting it

I'm not sure God wants the blame for that idiot. If she is running everything then she gives good people cancer too. You can't just cherry pick the bits you like. The guy behind him who got shot would not be feeling blessed.

Even in WW2, Gott mit uns was inscribed on German Wehrmacht belt buckles. People are eager to claim divine providence is on their side. In America at least, it rarely means because they've grappled with scripture and philosophy, they just want to pretend they have the moral high ground without earning it.

Part of the problem is the Democrat Party has spent the better part of a decade telling a significant part of the electorate they aren't wanted or needed - "too pale and male."

In my home state of North Carolina here is the ethnic breakdown of people who pulled a Democrat Ballot in early voting during the 2024 General Election.

Now by Gender:

I'm very active in local politics and treat everyone I interact with as much respect and patience as I can muster.

Forums that lean Democrat, overwhelmingly display and communicate for their neighbors, particularly on the basis of opinions on Federal politics. They have inadvertently abandoned any opportunity to be persuasive.

I have some thoughts about Trump's take over of the Republican Party, his voter base is actually a combination of Republicans and unaffiliated voters.
