The Ethics of AI on Hive: A Call for Authenticity (ENG/ESP)

I almost feel obligated to talk about AI and how its existence affects Hive. There’s this idea floating around that we ought to completely stay away from it, and I want to challenge that notion in this post. That said, I believe there’s a way—just like with any tool—to use it ethically.
When this experiment began almost a decade ago, the idea was for this blockchain to become a home for humans. A common phrase you’ll hear around here is “Proof of Brain,” which is a creative framing of how we “mine,” if you will, the tokens of Hive. In contrast to other blockchains that require expensive gear and advanced technical knowledge, Hive empowers people to participate by contributing their actions on-chain.
To be a Hivean, you don’t need to be wealthy—or adopt the mindset of a gambler. I’d even venture to say you're more likely to do well here if you avoid those things entirely. But of course, that’s up to you.
The point is, the barrier to entry on Hive is relatively low. That’s a great thing. But it can also be weaponized against us. And that, I submit to you, is precisely why we Hiveans become custodians of this blockchain. We want authenticity. We want real humans making real connections with others—using our tools. And again, these are just tools. They can be used unethically, but that was never the idea when this whole journey began.
Along comes AI—an amazing tool for content creators. It allows me to make some really cool thumbnails, for example. It can be used as a research assistant for complex topics, leaving Google in the dust. That last use, to me, is the best way to use AI. But of course, not everyone agrees, and I want to invite those who don’t to reconsider their position.
If I had to be facetious about it, I’d say: “I’m not trying to be friends with your ChatGPT.” It seems a bit silly that I—or anyone—would need to remind users that this place is about people. It’s called social media, even on Web3. So yes, using AI to replace your voice not only defeats the purpose of being social, it also creates a mirage—a façade. And a rather pathetic one, if I’m being completely honest.
There’s a little scandal making the rounds on the trending pages of our beloved home. No need for names. Suffice it to say, someone has been found presenting themselves as someone they’re not. The community responded accordingly, and the downvotes began. Of course, gaslighting is the name of the game now—obfuscation, dodging, victimhood—but I doubt anyone is truly buying it.
In case my stance isn’t clear yet, let me spell it out:
You are entitled to do as you please with your blog. You can post pictures of an infected toenail if you wish. But that doesn’t mean people will like it or support it. And if there are consequences to posting infected toenails—or AI-generated nonsense—you have to be willing to accept them.
If you want to fake all your writing and use ChatGPT not as a tool to aid you but as a replacement for effort, then be ready for the consequences. When support dries up, or when the downvotes start showing up, don’t act surprised.
Is this community overreach? Is it a form of abuse? Again, no. Nobody can stop you from posting fake things. You could literally copy-paste plagiarism here all day long. Just don’t expect people to like it, support it, or spare you from criticism and downvotes.
If I had to make a “real-world” analogy: you can be as deceitful as you want with people. Tell lies all day long. Just don’t expect to have any real friends.
I’m sharing this today because, as many of you know, I’ve been onboarding people from Ecuador to Hive—and I hope more of you will join me soon. I’ve made it very clear to every one of them: being authentic is my number one condition for supporting their efforts.
But I think that ethos—that sentiment, that standard—should be one we all share. Or at least those of us who truly care. Those of us who want to see Hive thrive.

No hace falta decir nombres.
Quienes queremos ver a Hive prosperar.

Authenticity is the one think that makes this place special.
AI content literally fills other web3 spaces, I feel those who want to try and play the same game here should be ready to play it on a different field, with different rules and against a referee team that isn't the least bit amused.
I sincerely believe the dead internet theory 100% what's happening right now.
I'm deliberately avoiding using such tools to post here. I can generally find a photo or screenshot to illustrate posts. I'm interested in engaging with humans, not bots and will cast my votes accordingly.
Of course this technology is evolving fast and may get harder to identify. People will use it if they cannot express themselves in English, but then I'm not against translation tools.
These are interesting and challenging times.
Translating text makes sense as a great way to use AI tools, hands down.
Using ChatGPT for ideas for interesting posts and writing the post yourself should also be OK.
And anything that makes our posts better without reducing the amount of effort to create it should be OK.
cant disagree with that logic
AI is here and it has come to stay, its already running people lives because of its ease of use. Although it shouldn't replace what humans do 100%, there should be a limit, it's a tool and should be used as such, our brains can't suffer or stay dormant because of AI
outsourcing all the thinking... that's going to work out just fine.
This is wonderful
I am against using AI for writing your articles because it is not your work and therefore not your rewards. The fun and enjoyment is in the writing of the articles and it represents who you are.
This is a topic that comes up again and again. I don't think anyone that's been here for a reasonable amount of time could argue against any of the wisdoms here. New arrivals are going to try - and will likely be scared off the platform when we retailiate against it. I think what has hopefully settled down are the accusations that don't take into account how AI is a tool, as you say, and can help people write better - but if it's a replacement for their writing, yeah NAH as us Aussies say.
It is easy to just not vote for what you don't like, or to downvote what you don't like. If I downvote something, it isn't a personal attack, its me distributing that little bit of HIVE to everyone else who has a pending reward on the chain :)
I think it is can be used as a tool to assist in ideation, or to check tone. But it isn't a replacement for human thought.
People who think that LLMs are "thinking" things, don't understand how they work :)
there lies the crux of the problem... people are trying to do precisely this.
If people didn't have critical thinking skills before, a LLM isn't going to give it to them :)
