As some of the followers of my ramblings know, I’ve been pretty excited about having a new on/off ramp for Hive. This friction—this difficulty—has always been a sticking point when I’m onboarding people. Well, I think my pitch just got rock solid.

This morning my older brother messaged me to say there’s an update on @zyptoapp and Hive seems to have gone live. I had to check right away. I downloaded the update before finishing my first cup of coffee—which almost never happens.

The update went through, I checked the list of supported coins, and there it was: Hive. Sadly—and I mean this sincerely—getting it to work wasn’t very easy. A mix of my unfamiliarity with the app and what I think is a less-than-intuitive flow left me a bit frustrated.

That said, I reached out to customer support and even pinged the @zyptoapp team on Twitter. They helped me quickly and even accepted my constructive critique, saying they might implement my suggested changes.

I’m sure the Zypto team will release tutorials soon, but I hope this post helps prevent some frustration for anyone trying out the app for the first time.

First Steps

The first thing you need to do is create a wallet. I won’t go into too much detail, since most crypto enthusiasts know the drill, but let me remind you of best practices:

Saving your seed phrase is crucial. Write it down on paper and store it safely at home.

After that step, I got a little lost.

Where Do I Add a Hive Account?

If you try sending or receiving Hive tokens right away, you’ll hit a wall. The app just throws an “Unknown error,” which isn’t the most graceful fallback. As I said, though, the Zypto team was quick to help.

When you open your wallet, click the top section of the screen. This takes you to a long list of supported tokens—pick Hive.

Here, you can enter your account information or even create a new account. At this step, I was reminded why many of us end up owning multiple Hive accounts: Zypto asks for the master key.

Best practice? Never give any app your master key. There’s absolutely no reason to do so. But because I wanted to test the app—and couldn’t wait to get a Visa card powered by Hive—I did the only rational thing: I created a new account, @menozypto.

Visa Virtual Card

Some people don’t find virtual cards exciting; they want a physical card. But honestly, for most of my needs, virtual works just fine. Sure, I can’t pull cash from an ATM, but I’m okay with that.

To get your virtual card, you’ll need to spend some tokens—about 11 HBD in my case. Zypto derives the HBD price from the Coingecko API, which is famously unreliable. It’s worth having a conversation with them about this, as it could cause issues down the line.

Yes, It’s KYC

Of course, you’re not getting a Visa debit card without revealing your details. I’m okay with that compromise, but I know it won’t suit everyone. Zypto outsources KYC to a third-party provider integrated into their app. The whole process took about five minutes—three more for the Visa card approval.

Adding the card to Google Wallet was straightforward.

Exciting Times Ahead

This feels like an important step forward. It’s now much easier for me to onboard people, and having this app in my arsenal strengthens my pitch.

Next time I pump gas, I’ll make sure to tell everyone my car is HBD-powered.

Si intentas enviar o recibir tokens de Hive de inmediato, te toparás con un muro. La app solo muestra un “Error desconocido”, lo cual no es muy elegante. Aun así, el equipo de Zypto fue muy rápido en ayudarme.

Al entrar en tu billetera, haz clic en la parte superior de la pantalla. Esto te llevará a una larga lista de tokens admitidos: elige Hive.

Aquí puedes ingresar la información de tu cuenta o incluso crear una nueva. En este punto recordé por qué muchos terminamos con varias cuentas Hive: Zypto pide la clave maestra.

La mejor práctica es nunca dar tu clave maestra a ninguna app. No hay absolutamente ninguna razón para hacerlo. Pero como quería probar la app—y no podía esperar para obtener una Visa Card respaldada por Hive—hice lo único racional: creé una nueva cuenta, @menozypto.

Tarjeta virtual Visa

Algunas personas no se emocionan con las tarjetas virtuales; quieren una física. Pero, sinceramente, para la mayoría de mis necesidades, una virtual es suficiente. Claro, no puedo retirar efectivo en un cajero automático, pero eso está bien para mí.
