Hiveology: Gamification of Behaviors - Ideas about Curation Scores

avatar

take care of the farm.png

As you may know, a group of us old Hiveans have been brainstorming ways to influence the culture of the platform. Today, the Jabber Talkie team is releasing a very special podcast featuring @moeknows, focused on the topic of reputation score. But it was this very conversation that sparked a clearer vision—a way to gamify the Hive experience and put our fingers on the scale when it comes to encouraging desirable user behaviors.

I believe the credit for the visual concept goes to @buttcoins. The idea is that the Hive frontends—whether it's PeakD, Ecency, or any other—would display not just your avatar and the current number we mistakenly call "reputation," but instead, a flower, with each petal representing a different score. I loved that initial idea. But my dear wife suggested—and I think she was spot on—that a honeycomb structure would make even more sense, keeping the theme intact.

The breakdown could look like this:

  • A hexagon for Experience (the current reputation)
  • A hexagon for Reputation (as proposed by @moeknows)
  • A hexagon for Voting Habits
  • A hexagon for KE Ratio
  • A hexagon for Comment/Post Ratio

I think the idea can be easily expanded. Adding a hexagon feels... organic, if I may say so. Of course, people contribute to Hive in many ways beyond posting, commenting, or curating—but ideally, a revamped reputation system would account for those contributions too.

Today, however, I'm going to attempt something I've never done here before. I’m a mediocre coder at best, but in my younger years, I built a few things I was proud of. That background still helps me think like a programmer, even if my Hive coding journey has mostly been limited to little scripts here and there.

This concept of a curation score is heavily inspired by recent conversations I’ve had with @acidyo. Again, my goal isn’t to burn down the house and build a new one. What I’m trying to do is encode the unwritten rules—the behaviors we old Hiveans recognize as good, but that newcomers often struggle to identify and internalize.

Not long ago, I shared a philosophically stained post about Hivean bias—a play on the idea of survivor bias. And I’d invite anyone who’s quick to dismiss the ideas we’re proposing to do some introspection on the topic. It doesn’t matter if you or I already know what a good Hivean acts like. These ideas—this gamification—aren’t for us. They’re for those still finding their way. They’re for the ones who need a map.

With all this in mind, allow me share a White Paper of a kind, I've been working on this week. It addresses specifically Curation Score, but as I've said, this can tie easily to our broader idea of building the concept of Hiveology. The statistics that show us clearly, desired and undesired user behaviors.

I worked on a little mockup this morning of how it might look. I think it will help us all get on the same page- at least for this conversation.

A Curation‑Quality Score for Hive

1. Introduction

Hive’s “proof of brain” ethos rewards those who discover, foster, and amplify high‑quality content. Yet it can be hard to distinguish between genuine curators and vote rings that simply recycle rewards among a small circle. We propose a simple, transparent Curation‑Quality Score (CQS) — a 1–10 metric that captures how broadly, fairly, and independently a user curates content over a rolling 7‑day window.

2. Design Goals

  1. Encourage breadth Reward users who seek out new voices, up to a healthy social limit (≈ 50).
  2. Incentivize outreach Credit vote weight cast beyond one’s core circle.
  3. Discourage self‑voting bias Penalize heavy self‑voting that inflates rewards.
  4. Keep it simple Three sub‑scores combined into a single 1–10 rating.
  5. Transparent & on‑chain All inputs are publicly available via Hive APIs.

3. Definitions (7‑Day Window)

SymbolDefinition
WₜₒₜTotal vote‑weight cast by user (sum of all vote percentages)
UNumber of unique authors the user voted for
W₅₀Sum of vote‑weight directed to the user’s top 50 authors
WₛVote‑weight the user cast on themselves

4. Sub‑Scores

  1. Breadth (B)
    [
    B = \min!\bigl(\tfrac{U}{50},,1.0\bigr)
    ]
    – 0 if you vote 0 authors; 1 if you vote ≥ 50 distinct authors.

  2. Outreach (O)
    [
    O = \frac{W_{\rm tot} - W_{50}}{W_{\rm tot}}
    ]
    – Fraction of your weight going outside your top 50 recipients.

  3. Anti‑Self (S)
    [
    S = 1 ;-;\frac{W_s}{W_{\rm tot}}
    ]
    – 1 if you never self‑vote; declines toward 0 as self‑voting increases.

Each sub‑score ranges from 0 to 1.

5. Composite Score

  1. RawScore = (B + O + S) ÷ 3
  2. Curation‑Quality Score (1–10)
    [
    \text{CQS} = \bigl\lceil ,\text{RawScore} \times 9 \bigr\rceil + 1
    ]
    – RawScore = 0 → CQS = 1; RawScore = 1 → CQS = 10.

6. Example Calculations

CuratorUW₅₀/WₜₒₜWₛ/WₜₒₜBOSRawScoreCQS
A (narrow)10100 %20 %0.20.000.800.333
B (core‑only)50100 %0 %1.00.001.000.677
C (diverse)10025 %0 %1.00.751.000.9210
D (self‑heavy)3060 %40 %0.60.400.500.506

7. Implementation Steps

  1. Data retrieval
    • Use Hive’s history API to fetch a user’s votes over the last 7 days.
  2. Compute inputs
    • Sum vote weights (Wₜₒₜ), tally weights per author, count U, identify top 50 & sum W₅₀, measure Wₛ.
  3. Calculate sub‑scores & CQS
    • Apply formulas from Sections 4–5.
  4. Display
    • Show “Curation‑Quality Score: X / 10” on user profiles in PeakD, with optional mini‑chart for B, O, S.

8. Benefits to PeakD & Hive

  • Enhanced discovery: Spotlight users who genuinely explore beyond their circles.
  • Community trust: Expose collusion patterns and promote fair curation.
  • Gamified improvement: Encourage curators to raise their own CQS through broader engagement.
  • Aligns with Proof of Brain: Reinforces Hive’s founding principle—reward effort and quality, not just reciprocation.

9. Next Steps & Feedback

We invite the PeakD developer community and Hive curators to:

  1. Review the proposed formulas and suggest refinements.
  2. Prototype a UI mock‑up for displaying the Curation‑Quality Score.
  3. Test with a small group of volunteer users.
  4. Iterate based on real‑world data and community feedback.

Together, let’s strengthen Hive’s curation economy and celebrate those who truly seek out fresh voices.

End of Proposal

Before I go, let me say

I'm giving this idea to Hive—to all of you. I’m not planning to submit a proposal or seek DHF funding for it. My motivation is simple: a rising tide lifts all ships. That’s really all there is to it.

I honestly don’t know if the PeakD or Ecency teams would be interested in implementing something like this. But because I’m passionate about these ideas—as are all of us on the Jabber Talkie team—I’m more than willing to discuss, debate, and fine-tune them if needed.

Anyway, I hope that, at the very least, I’ve inspired someone to think more deeply about this concept of behavior gamification. Just imagine how much better this place could be if we all aimed to look our best—for the Hivean picture.

Much love,

MenO

Oh yeah, Hiveology!

About a year ago, I created a very well explained and elaborated article with multiple graphics and videos with revolutionary ideas on how to enhance and improve The Gamification of Behaviors in Hive. And although its development was based on formulas much simpler than yours, I don't know if they were not understood well or what. But apparently there wasn't enough support to try to adopt them. So, I recommend you illustrate your formulas a little better, just to see if you have a little more luck than me.

Well, you can start by clicking on the link in my previous comment. Since it basically will take you to an even more illustrative summary than the previous one, which was based more on numbers, signs, formulas and a somewhat more complicated algebra. I'm afraid it will take me a little longer to find the link of that older "academic" article. As you know, Hive search engines are useless.

I have an idea for a layout which fits the honeycomb pattern idea while allowing easy expansion of new metrics and scores. Additional scores might include the number of witnesses votes used (or an icon for choosing a proxy) as suggested in the image. This also doesn't interfere with the current PeakD bees for HP level, and could include a minnow/dolphin/whale icon or community badges as well. By expanding leftward, it prevents too much change to current frontent UI layout, I hope.

It should go without saying that this idea is offered without any strings attached. Anyone is free to use it, modify it, whatever. I threw on my icon out of habit, but that's all.

A Wake-Up Call: Accountability and Redemption in the Hive Ecosystem

To those who believe their actions on the Hive blockchain go unnoticed, it’s time to confront the truth. The power you think you wield through downvotes, vote farming, and manipulation is an illusion. True strength lies in doing what’s right, not in exploiting systems for personal gain or silencing others out of fear.

1. The Illusion of Power Through Exploitation

If you’re downvoting critics, running coordinated farms, or hoarding influence to control rewards, ask yourself: What does this say about your character? Manipulating Hive’s reward system doesn’t make you powerful—it exposes vulnerabilities. It shows a reliance on unethical tactics to feel significant in a space that was meant to empower everyone equally.

But here’s the reality: these actions won’t bring lasting satisfaction. At night, when you’re alone with your thoughts, do you truly believe what you’re doing is right? Regret has a way of lingering, and no amount of HIVE tokens can silence the voice inside telling you there’s a better path.

2. The Ripple Effect of Your Actions

Your choices don’t just harm Hive—they affect the people around you. Your online friends may follow along now, but loyalty built on shaky foundations crumbles quickly. And what about your family? Do they understand how much energy you pour into behaviors that ultimately hurt others and yourself?

Every action has consequences, and the deeper you dig, the harder it becomes to climb out. You’re not just harming Hive—you’re pulling those close to you into a cycle of negativity and regret. Is it worth it?

3. Change Before It’s Too Late

The Bilpcoin team isn’t here to attack individuals—we’re here to spark change. We’ve seen the evidence, and we know the impact of manipulative practices. But we also believe in redemption. There’s still time to step back, reflect, and choose a different path.

Ask yourself:

  • What legacy do you want to leave on Hive?
  • How will you feel years from now looking back at how you treated others?
  • Wouldn’t it feel better to contribute positively rather than exploit and divide?

Hive deserves better. So do you.

4. Strength Lies in Doing What’s Right

Real power comes from integrity, not manipulation. Instead of focusing on how many tokens you can farm or how many users you can silence, consider how you can add value to the ecosystem. Create meaningful content, support genuine contributors, and advocate for reforms that benefit everyone—not just a select few.

If you continue down your current path, remember this: you are being watched. Many stay silent, but they see everything. Blockchain data doesn’t lie, and accountability always comes knocking—whether today, tomorrow, or years from now.

5. A Final Plea: Fix What Needs Fixing

It’s never too late to change course. Stop the farming, stop the toxicity, and start contributing to Hive in ways that uplift rather than tear down. If you’re struggling with why you’ve chosen this path, take a moment to reflect. Seek help if needed—there’s no shame in admitting you’ve lost your way.

The Hive community is watching, waiting, and hoping for positive change. Will you rise to the occasion, or will you let regret define your journey? The choice is yours.

From the Bilpcoin Team: We’re committed to helping Hive thrive by exposing the truth and fostering transparency. Let’s work together to build a stronger, fairer ecosystem—one where everyone has a chance to succeed.

What will your next move be?

Addressing the Downvote Issue on Hive: It’s Time for Real Change

Marky Mark Stop the manipulation game Lady Zaza Bpc AI Music

Let’s cut through the noise and address one of the most pressing issues holding Hive back from reaching its full potential: abusive downvotes. The Bipcoin team has consistently exposed the systemic problems that stifle growth on this platform, yet little to no action has been taken. If Hive is to thrive, we must confront these challenges head-on instead of engaging in empty discussions that lead nowhere.

Hive cannot grow if nothing changes. How can new users and smaller creators flourish when they are constantly suppressed by those who exploit the system? Many so-called “whales” contribute nothing meaningful to the ecosystem—instead, they focus solely on farming rewards through manipulative tactics like mass self-voting, spam content, or coordinated downvoting campaigns. These actions discourage genuine participation and erode trust within the community.

Blockchain transactions don’t lie. We’ve seen firsthand the shady methods used to game the system—whether it’s creating alt accounts to amplify votes, orchestrating downvote brigades, or hoarding influence without giving back to the network. Why does this behavior continue unchecked? Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words, and until concrete steps are taken to address these abuses, Hive will struggle to move forward.

We have repeatedly presented evidence of these practices, not to divide but to demand accountability. The truth is out there for anyone willing to look at the data. Yet, despite our efforts, the cycle persists. Today, we’re asking again: Can we finally talk about the real issues plaguing Hive? And more importantly, can we take decisive action to protect the integrity of this platform?

Do not let bullies destroy what makes Hive special. Abuse of power through downvotes and manipulation harms everyone—creators, curators, and the community as a whole. It’s time to fight back against these toxic practices and create an environment where all voices can be heard and rewarded fairly.

The Bipcoin team remains committed to exposing the truth and advocating for meaningful change. But we can’t do it alone. Together, let’s push for solutions that ensure Hive becomes a place of opportunity, fairness, and growth—for everyone.

Enough talk. Let’s see action.

Every curation reward from @buildawhale’s bot votes:

  • Steals from creators.
  • Centralizes power.
  • Normalizes abuse.

The blockchain doesn’t forget—your actions are permanently recorded. So, enjoy your scam farm snacks now, because karma always delivers the bill.

A system like this is not only confusing, it makes it impossible for newcomers to Hive to ever catch up to people who already know the game. Having an elitist system designed by Hive maximalists who have years of experience and self proclaimed good behavior dictate scores is not the direction we should be going in to make this a more inclusive platform. It provides further reason to discriminate against people and makes Hive even more of a tight knit cliche of expert users. Hive is already complicated, no need to make it even more complicated.

The main problem with Hive is the inflation, the whales and their unfair influence on the DHF. We are rewarding those who are doing nothing special and punishing everyone who has invested a penny into Hive. I have a KE ratio less than one, you want to turn me off the system because I don't have time to curate and explore new content? Because I don't spam blogs with 'that's beautiful' or because I don't live up to the reputational designs of people who have time to have meetings on the subject? Everytime I think of moving some profits made elsewhere into Hive, I read proposals to waste more money and make Hive more confusing and decide absolutely no!

  • With the proposed reputation system, a new account can have the same or even higher reputation than an old one. The podcast of this idea is coming out later today. So, there's no unreachable goal here.

That said, I get your point. All I'm advocating for is total transparency. This discrimination you speak of is already happening, and the accounts that don't get curated don't really know why they don't.

I literally just a saw a dude asking why he never get votes and Azircon explaining the rationale behind who he votes for. Again, his right to vote on what he wants. These metrics help people be aware they already exist. This is the key point They already exist but they are not clearly defined. These would define them.

Again, your point is valid. I do get it. We are far from being perfect, but I will also submit this much to you. There is no such thing as a perfect platform. I'm not a month into Substack and Medium, and they got their own issues, some of them comically are exactly like the ones we struggle with on hive.
