Blown gasket, broken plans (Eng/Esp)

I give this advice to people all the time, yet I'm aware that it doesn't make things better at all. Life doesn't get easier—we just get stronger. Yesterday, life did just that. It got harder. And I hope I can be stronger too.
We had just gotten my wife's car back from the shop. Routine work, nothing fancy. I also bought some HBD from @charlierpidalda, so again, I was accomplishing two things with this trip. One, building up our little Hive economy here. And two, getting the car the work it needed.
But then, as we were heading home, the car shut down on its own.
My immediate thought was filter. It's not that uncommon for a rodent to build a nest in the air filter box and choke the car. So I checked—and it looked perfect. I drove back to the shop, noticing that the car’s performance wasn’t great either. It struggled more than it should with a little hill.

Charlie called one of his guys over. And like a bee drawn to honey, the guy went straight for the radiator cap. The car wasn’t hot yet, so it was safe to check. The shop is very close to our place. But then—chocolate water.
This can only mean one thing, and that one thing is absolutely terrible: the gasket failed.
Why did it fail? I have no clue. There was no overheating. The head is brand spanking new, not even a year old. In fact, we did a full engine rebuild back in August 2024—and that job burned up the last of our savings.
I told Charlie to go ahead and open it up. Nothing else should be done here. Without taking a look inside the engine, we have no way of knowing what failed. And running it with mixed antifreeze and oil is asking for even more damage. The engine has to be flushed, cleaned, and reassembled—again.
I don’t think much was damaged this time around. The head shouldn’t be warped, for example. I hope, since I stopped the car quickly after the issue started, the cylinder walls are still okay. They can get scratched pretty bad when this sort of thing happens and you don’t notice.
But this is the real problem: we don’t have the money to fix this. Not right now.
I had set aside some LTC, waiting for a pump so I could buy back into Hive and "rest" that value in HBD. But it looks like that plan just got punched in the face by Mike Tyson.
I'm going to try to keep a positive attitude today. Truth is, what's done is done, and there's nothing I can do right now to make it better.
But hey… you can’t win all the battles.

No tengo idea. No hubo recalentamiento.

Cars are always a pain in the ass, but you still want one. Me and my gf just bought a new used car, big upgrade for us. And the first thing we had to do was taking it to the shop for a service -.-
I get married to these things... oh well... without them I couldn't do all I want to do, so what's the alternative?
Maybe go back to school and learn how to be a mechanic? 😅
Or do like me and just accept that they will cost you a lot of money and sweat 😅
That royally sucks.
I know, because we're in the ame boat. Just spent $2000+ on getting our Jeep a new radiator, water pump and several other things because it was running hot and there was a crack somewhere. Four weeks later, problem while my wife was driving it, out of town. In to a really good mechanic we know in Seattle. Another $800... including the fact that the replacement belt from the original fix hadn't been put on entirely right. WTF? But it worked... three weeks later, it's overheating again... "Yeah, your head has a crack in it... that'll be $3,500 to fix."
Damn straight, "my head has a crack in it."
So now it gets to be a driveway ornament until we can scrape together enough to get it fixed again... which is no time soon, given how life is unfolding. Fortunately we know a really good mechanic from one of the local shops who's currently moonlighting so he can make his child support payments... I think we're 3rd in line for a fix, maybe in September.
Anyone who claims cars (other than rare collectible ones) are an investment need their heads examined...
Positive attitude? Well... at least my coffee was really good, this morning! 🤣
oh wow brother, that's wild!! Is public transportation ok around your neck of the woods?
Not much in the way of public transportation where we are, but thankfully our old truck will still get us from point A to point B, as long as we don't need to go more than 10-15km. We do have reliabel bus service if we need to go to Seattle to see the kids/grandkids, and once we're on the Seattle side of the water it's fine... big city with good services.

Damn, that sucks... I know the feeling. I had to sell my car last month for less than I paid for repairing the brakes in February. It was leaking and burning oil at slow speeds, which I couldn't afford to fix. Sold it to a guy who already had the same model (Fiat Stilo) with more miles on the clock, which needed even more repairs.
At least you can trust Charlie. Once I had the gasket replaced on my first car before I went on a long trip abroad. After 15 minutes it broke down because the mechanic hadn't tightened it correctly...
I don't take Charlie for granted... Honestly, mechanics in Ecuador are quite sleazy and I'm being nice. He's the exact opposite.
That's a bummer. Cars tend to eat money. Modern ones are getting more complex too. Our next one will probably be electric and at least those have less moving parts to fail. No engine oil or coolant. Our Honda is 21 years old and keeps going, but is bound to fail expensively eventually.
My wife's car is 22 years old... but again, I had the whole engine rebuilt. We were supposed to be good for another 10 years at least. ha!! silly me
