23andMe is done - What now?

avatar

I'm going to come out and say it: I screwed up. I had this sensation in the back of my head, you know? - Don't do it, no need, you are who you are, who cares what your DNA says- and yet.

23nme.jpeg

I truly gained nothing from this. I found out I'm mainly Irish/Spanish, which I knew already and not much more besides that. But, it also opened a can of worms- finding out a family member is not related to me broke my heart.

All that said...

WTF are they going to do with the Data?

Is it up for auction? Anyone can just bid for the data? Will the government step in and prevent, say China from buying this information?

Ok - breathe - I realize I might be exaggerating a bit, but there's something in the back of my head again, and I don't want to ignore it this time.

This story is not big, it's huge. The right thing to do would be for all the information to be destroyed. Is that going to happen? Somehow I doubt it, that information is just too valuable.

Where is The Joker when you need him?

My spidey sense was always tingling on that one, so as curious as I was, I never pulled the trigger. I just couldn't see a sustainable business model here.

I hope nothing bad comes of the data. The government should step in here, but under Trump... not unless someone offers him some kind of kickback.

You should just stop worrying.

Because the DNA collection service was always a honeytrap to get everyone's DNA. It was never NOT in the possession of the govern-cement.

Of course, i agree with you, that stuff should exist. That kind of database, shouldn't exist while we have an Orwellian govern-cement/deep state.

The good news is that it really doesn't matter that they have YOUR DNA sequence. It is not as good of a "fingerprint" as they make it out to be.

The "DNA" evidence used in movies is just that, in movies. In the actual court room, it is allowed when many times it shouldn't be. There is too much hype, and not enough reality.

What T.H.E.Y. have been doing with it is trying to make a disease that only kills the people they want dead. Other than that, T.H.E.Y. have been trying to catalog human behaviors to know who are the Jokers in the world.

I know you are correct, but I'm also even more angry.

And you have every right to be angry. Govern-cement should never even think of going there.

It should be written in the constitution, govern-cement crosses any of these lines, every govern-cement bureaucrat is fired.

I never used it, but it seems they couldn't make it viable. Most of us don't really need that sort of service. What do you really gain if you are 1% viking? I heard some crimes got solved with their data.

I'm 3% Jewish, which means that if I get attacked by Christian fundamentalists, I just so happen to have shield.

On a serious note, my brother insisted we do it. But I'm mad at myself right now

I'm more interested in the story of my family and you can't get that from genetics.

The whole DNA testing thing always felt a little sketchy, like what really happens to all that data? Finding out family surprises is one thing, but the whole thing about your genetic info floating around for who knows who to use, I wish they'll be a way to be reassured privacy. Cloning Meno will be easy

I never liked the idea of those genetics companies. It felt fishy from the start. I have a family member who briefly joined the Mormon church and did some serious family genealogy as a result. Good enough for me.

Odds are there'll be legal battles and class-action lawsuits depending on whatever fine print went with the process.
