A once in a blue moon experience: Valentine wahala
On Valentine's Day, I found myself with no plans and a preconceived notion of how dull the day would be, as it usually was for a single guy like me. Opting to stay home to avoid the potential oppression from lovey-dovey couples, I spent the day surfing through various social media platforms, observing people's WhatsApp statuses and witnessing different forms of Valentine's Day drama.
Valentine's dramas had become somewhat of a tradition for me – a source of entertainment as I chuckled at the theatrics of love. Little did I know that this Valentine's Day would be different from those in the past.
I was lounging in my room, engrossed in videos on my phone, when my roommate barged in with a sense of urgency. "Omo guy, come see oppression na," he exclaimed, as if he had stumbled upon something extraordinary. Intrigued, we headed to the front veranda, overlooking the diverse occupants of our large multi-story building.
As we looked down, I couldn't help but be amazed. One of the guys residing downstairs had orchestrated a grand surprise for his girlfriend. Friends surrounded her with balloons, and there was even a car adorned with balloons – a gift from the doting boyfriend. Witnessing this romantic gesture, I couldn't help but admit it was a lovely scene.
Later in the afternoon, seeking refuge from the overwhelming heat and a power outage, my friend and I decided to sit outside near the gate. Engaged in watching a football match, we were interrupted by the entrance of a young lady into the compound.
"Good afternoon," she greeted us.
"Good afternoon," we both responded.
"Please, which room is Kelvin staying in?" she inquired.
I was uncertain about who Kelvin might be, as I only knew a couple of people on the second floor. My friend, however, seemed to be deep in thought.
"We don't know him, but describe him. Maybe we can remember the person," I suggested.
"He is fair, average height, braided hair, and not that fat," she began.
"I still don't know the person," I replied. My friend continued pondering.
"He even has a tattoo on his right hand," she added.
Suddenly, clarity struck. We now knew exactly who she was referring to – the guy who had gifted his girlfriend a car that morning.
"Oh, I now know who you are looking for. He stays in that room where the car is parked, the one with the balloons," my friend pointed her in the direction of the guy's room. I wanted to caution him against revealing the information, but it occurred to me that she might be a relative.
"Okay, thank you," she said and made her way to the room.
She knocked on the door several times before the guy appeared. Their conversation, however, was inaudible from our vantage point due to the distance and the noise from the ongoing football match. As they embraced and kissed, a sense of foreboding crept over me. It was just as I suspected.
"Hey, turn off that thing, let me know what is going on," I urged my friend, tapping him to get his attention.
The lady attempted to enter the room, but the man resisted. She pressed him for a reason, but he couldn't provide one. Her suspicion heightened, and she started trying to force her way inside. A struggle ensued until she managed to maneuver her way into the room. As she entered, the girl who had received the car ran out, triggering a confrontation with exchanged words that attracted onlookers.
The two ladies, differing in size, engaged in a physical altercation. Attempts to separate them proved futile, and before long, the slim girl was left battered and bruised on the ground.
"Look at both of them fighting, and the guy is just sitting there watching," my friend remarked, struggling to contain his laughter.
The slim girl finally seized an opportunity to escape, hopping into the damaged car and starting the engine. The realization that her opponent had received a car gift from the man triggered an attack. With tears streaming down her face, the lady grabbed a sizable stone from an unknown source and smashed the windshield of the car.
As the feud gradually settled, I retreated to my room, reflecting on the spectacle that had unfolded. While I pitied the three individuals involved, especially the girls fighting over a man, the truth was that they had injected an unexpected dose of excitement into my otherwise uneventful Valentine's Day indoors.
