Ya hace más de 8 meses que vivo en México y lo que he visto en variedad de cervezas es mucho. Aquí sí es bastante consumida, es como parte de la identidad y cultura de los mexicanos.

It’s been more than 8 months since I’ve been living in Mexico and what I’ve seen in terms of beer variety is a lot. Here it is quite consumed, it’s like part of the identity and culture of Mexicans.

Me gusta tomar cerveza y he tenido el placer de probar algunas de las tantas que aquí abundan, pero aún no había saboreado la icónica Cerveza Victoria. Ya la había visto en muchos comerciales e incluso a personas bebiéndola, pero no había llegado a mis manos. Hoy, por fortuna, tuve ese placer.

I like to drink beer and I’ve had the pleasure of trying some of the many that abound here, but I hadn’t yet tasted the iconic Beer Victoria. I had already seen it in many commercials and even people drinking it, but it hadn’t come into my hands. Today, fortunately, I had that pleasure.

En mi trabajo llegó el padre de mi jefe, muy amante de la cerveza por cierto, y trajo consigo un six, como se le conoce aquí al paquete de seis, de Victoria. Estando yo cerca, me llamaron y preguntaron si ya la conocía y la había tomado. Como mi respuesta fue que aún no la probaba, me regalaron una lata.

At my job, my boss’s father arrived, a big beer lover by the way, and he brought with him a six-pack, as it’s known here for the pack of six, of Victoria. Being nearby, they called me and asked if I already knew it and had drunk it. Since my answer was that I hadn’t tried it yet, they gave me a can as a gift.

¿Qué puedo decir? Me vino muy bien con el calor que hacía en ese momento. Aproveché que estaba bien fría y no esperé para abrirla y dar el primer trago. ¡Exquisita, señores, de veras! Tiene un amargor sutil pero suave y un dulzor acaramelado al final que resalta la malta como uno de sus ingredientes principales.

What can I say? It came at just the right time with the heat that was going on at that moment. I took advantage of it being nice and cold and didn’t wait to open it and take the first sip. Exquisite, gentlemen, really! It has a subtle but smooth bitterness and a caramel-like sweetness at the end that highlights the malt as one of its main ingredients.

Mientras la disfrutaba en la privacidad de mi puesto de trabajo, mi curiosidad por su sabor me llevó a investigar un poco sobre su historia y características.

While I enjoyed it in the privacy of my workstation, my curiosity about its flavor led me to investigate a bit about its history and characteristics.

Esta "agua", como suelen referirse los mexicanos a este líquido refrescante, ya que la consumen como si de verdad lo fuera, es bastante añeja. Fue creada en 1865 en Toluca. Sus inicios fueron parte de la Cervecería Toluca y México, pero en 1935 su marca y activos pasaron a las manos de la muy famosa Cervecería Modelo.

Leyendo un poco más, resulta que es una Vienna Lager, o como se conoce, estilo Viena, que refiere a una fórmula de elaboración de la cerveza que la hace más suave al paladar, con dulzor y con su característico color ámbar casi cobrizo. Y sí que es verdad, ya me referí a su sabor anteriormente, lo cual cumple con la fórmula a la perfección, y sobre su color, pueden verlo ustedes mismos cómo en el vaso destaca su dorado y cuando se mueve el líquido deja ver sus tonos cobrizos. Esto la convierte en la Vienna Lager más representativa de este país.

This “water,” as Mexicans usually refer to this refreshing liquid, since they consume it as if it really were, is quite old. It was created in 1865 in Toluca. Its beginnings were part of the Cervecería Toluca y México, but in 1935 its brand and assets passed into the hands of the very famous Cervecería Modelo.

Reading a bit more, it turns out it’s a Vienna Lager, or as it’s known, Vienna style, which refers to a beer brewing formula that makes it smoother on the palate, with sweetness and its characteristic amber almost copper color. And yes, it’s true, I already referred to its flavor earlier, which fulfills the formula to perfection, and about its color, you can see for yourselves how in the glass its golden hue stands out and when you move the liquid it reveals its copper tones. This makes it the most representative Vienna Lager of this country.

Su porcentaje de alcohol es perfecto, con un 4.0% está en el punto exacto donde no es ligera ni amarga o fuerte. Sus ingredientes fundamentales son: el agua, la malta de cebada, los cereales no malteados y el lúpulo, haciéndola una mezcla perfecta, exquisita para el paladar de los amantes de esta "agua" y aún mayor si el calor apremia tomarla.

Its alcohol percentage is perfect, with 4.0% it’s at the exact point where it’s neither light nor bitter or strong. Its fundamental ingredients are: water, barley malt, unmalted cereals, and hops, making it a perfect mix, exquisite for the palate of lovers of this “water” and even more so if the heat demands drinking it.

Para mejorar la experiencia, amigos, lo mejor es beberla junto al limón; este agudiza su sabor al máximo y te proporciona una refrescante combinación.

To improve the experience, friends, the best is to drink it with lime; this sharpens its flavor to the maximum and provides you with a refreshing combination.

Algo más pasa con esta cerveza, y es que no es solo para tomarla y ya; es para tomarla con orgullo, ya que representa parte de la tradición mexicana. Con su nombre por todo lo alto, dejando clara la Victoria de México, y si se fijan a detalle, su dibujo es precisamente el país, México en toda su extensión. En definitiva, su imagen está ligada al orgullo mexicano, sin dudas.

Something else happens with this beer, and it’s that it’s not just for drinking and that’s it; it’s for drinking it with pride, since it represents part of the Mexican tradition. With its name held high, making clear the Victory of Mexico, and if you look closely, its drawing is precisely the country, Mexico in all its extension. In short, its image is linked to Mexican pride, without a doubt.

Fue toda una experiencia gustosa haberla probado, sin duda de las mejores hasta ahora, junto a la Modelo y Corona. Seguiré consumiéndola en el futuro, de eso no hay dudas. 🍻😉

It was a truly enjoyable experience to have tried it, undoubtedly one of the best so far, along with Modelo and Corona. I’ll keep consuming it in the future, no doubt about that.🍻😉
