Lola era una pequeña tortuga que vivía en una madriguera cerca de un arroyo. Era media ermitaña y apenas hablaba con nadie, pensaba que no necesitaba de los demás para vivir y ser feliz. Un día, el cielo se puso muy, muy gris y empezó a llover. No era la lluvia suave que le gustaba a Lola para chapotear, sino una lluvia fuerte y persistente que no paraba.

Lola was a little turtle who lived in a burrow near a stream. She was somewhat of a hermit and barely spoke to anyone, thinking she didn’t need others to live and be happy. One day, the sky turned very, very gray and it started to rain. It wasn’t the soft rain that Lola liked for splashing around, but a strong and persistent rain that wouldn’t stop.

El agua empezó a subir y a entrar en su casita y Lola se asustó mucho.
Con su caparazón a cuestas, salió nadando y vio cómo el agua se llevaba su almohada de hojas secas, su camita de madera y su abanico, el mismo que usaba para echarse aire en verano. Entonces, Lola se sintió triste y un poco sola. De pronto, vio al pájaro Lolo refugiado en la rama más alta de un árbol.
-¡Lola, por aquí!- le gritó.

The water began to rise and enter her little house, and Lola got very scared. With her shell on her back, she swam out and saw how the water carried away her pillow of dry leaves, her little wooden bed, and her fan, the same one she used to fan herself in summer. Then, Lola felt sad and a little alone. Suddenly, she saw the bird Lolo sheltered on the highest branch of a tree.
-Lola, over here!- he shouted to her.

Lola nadó hacia él sin pensarlo y juntos, desde la altura, vieron a la Ardilla Pilla y a sus bebés tratando de salvar sus nueces en una pequeña barca hecha de cortezas.
-¡Trabajemos en equipo!- propuso Lola.

Lola swam towards him without thinking and together, from up high, they saw the Squirrel Pilla and her babies trying to save their nuts in a small boat made of bark.
-Let’s work as a team! - proposed Lola.

Todos se quedaron boquiabiertos pero nadie dijo nada. Lolo voló para buscar ramas secas y Lola, con su fuerte caparazón, ayudó a la familia de la Ardilla Pilla a subir a un lugar más seguro. Luego, todos se reunieron en la colina, que era el lugar más alto del bosque. Compartieron las nueces que salvaron y allí pasaron la noche contándose historias para animarse. Nunca habían interactuado aún viviendo en el mismo bosque. Fue una noche inolvidable y el inicio de la amistad entre ellos.

Everyone was left open-mouthed but no one said anything. Lolo flew to look for dry branches and Lola, with her strong shell, helped the Squirrel Pilla’s family climb to a safer place. Then, everyone gathered on the hill, which was the highest place in the forest. They shared the nuts they saved and there they spent the night telling each other stories to cheer up. They had never interacted even though they lived in the same forest. It was an unforgettable night and the beginning of friendship between them.

Al día siguiente, el sol salió brillante y el agua se retiró poco a poco. La vida volvía la normalidad. Por los sitios donde antes había pasado la inundación, el suelo estaba lleno de fango, pero también de pequeños tesoros como conchas brillantes y piedras lisas que el agua había dejado a su paso.

The next day, the sun came out bright and the water receded little by little. Life returned to normal. In the places where the flood had passed before, the ground was full of mud, but also of small treasures like shiny shells and smooth stones that the water had left in its wake.

Todos se pusieron a ayudar a limpiar y a reconstruir sus hogares. Lola aprendió que, aunque las inundaciones dan miedo, lo más importante es estar con los amigos. Juntos, eran más fuertes que cualquier tormenta. Y su nueva almohada de hojas, hecha entre todos, era aún más cómoda que la anterior.

Everyone got to work helping to clean and rebuild their homes. Lola learned that, although floods are scary, the most important thing is to be with friends. Together, they were stronger than any storm. And her new pillow of leaves, made by everyone, was even more comfortable than the previous one.
